Security is a growing concern to enterprise systems when they become open to e-commerce using the Internet. This is particularly severe in the e-commerce applications using knowledge management systems which generally maintain critical information about the enterprise. Security usually affects all parts of a system and to be effective must therefore be integrated in the enterprise architecture. The paper describes CODA, a complex organic distributed architecture for modeling distributed knowledge management systems applied to business intelligence, and proposes a security system architecture to be integrated to it. The foundation of the security system is a role based access control model, which provides all the functionality required by a security system including authentication and auditing.

The paper attempts to marry object oriented software architecture with M. Jackson's (1995) "problem frames". Jackson's problem frames follow from his perception that many systemic problems in modern software development can be addressed by a greater problem space orientation during system specification and analysis, and a clearer separation of problem and solution space concerns during design and implementation. The author attempts an experimental union of problem space and object oriented architecture by adopting Jackson's generic problem structural patterns, problem frames, as the principal structural driver of an object oriented architecture. Problem frames bring with them a detailed method for solving problems of the corresponding class; the paper extends one problem frame's method to include a basic object oriented framework to provide a reference software architecture. The problem frame's reference architecture is evaluated by applying it to the design of a typical business component. The characteristics of the resultant architecture are then evaluated.

When building larger network information systems, the efficient management and transmission of a large amount of information are important for several reasons. Firstly, the system will become disordered without a perfect information management strategy when faced with the tremendous amount of information resources. Secondly, it is essential for the system to transmit a large amount of information in a secure and efficient way in a wide networking environment. Furthermore, a system with excellent compatibility and extensibility will be valuable in terms of system maintenance and update. We propose a flexible distributed information delivery system, DID, which is based on software agents and CORBA. The design and implementation of the DID system are described in detail.

Describes a normalization design for complex object schemes and its proof. The purpose of normalizing complex object schemes is not only to group objects into related relationships, but also to choose a structure for the information system which is a good representation of the semantic relationships among objects that already exist in the real world. Firstly, we define the object dependency (OD) based on the data dependencies among objects, and we present the properties of the OD. Then we define the object normal form, the normal object scheme tree and the normal object scheme forest, and show the properties of the object normal form. We show that the normal object scheme forest is the most desirable structure for complex object schemes. Then we present the algorithm MIMI for deriving a normal object scheme forest. Finally, we present and prove the properties of a normal object scheme forest produced by the MIMI algorithm under a set of conflict-free ODs.

The paper describes the design of a component based application framework for systems utilising the streaming data passing semantic. Many advanced applications employ data streams to model continuous or semi-continuous flows of information. We describe an application framework, called iFlow, that can significantly ease the effort in developing such applications. This framework supports the dynamic construction of channels between the source and recipient of information that matches the requirements of the different systems involved in the information exchange. We conclude with a description of applying iFlow to a particular stream oriented application for the dissemination of imagery information.

Container-managed messaging (CMM) allows a Java component to communicate via messaging without having to manage the messaging infrastructure, similarly to how container-managed persistence (CMP) allows an EJB (Enterprise JavaBean) to have persistent data without managing access to a data store. In addition, messaging parameters (such as destinations, mode of interaction, time-outs, etc.) can be defined declaratively in a deployment descriptor. The programming model used in CMM resembles that of CORBA messaging with the exception that it is in an anonymous and declarative fashion.

The paper proposes a security characterization structure of software components and their composition. The structure provides a preliminary modelling of security properties of stand-alone software components and some of their compositional primitives. In this paper, we are particularly interested in security properties related to user data protection of software components. The proposed compositional specification makes an attempt to model the resulting effect between security attributes of two contracting components. The compositional specification structure can capture the results of combined security specifications of two participating components in a contract. Our security specification syntax is based on four compositional elements: identities of contracting components, actions to be performed in a compositional relationship, security attributes supported by components, and resources to be used by other components. The structure is used in an example of secure interactions over a network to illustrate the applicability of the proposed work.

Interface Mutation (IM) is proposed as an adequacy criterion to assess the adequacy of test sets developed to test components and systems. IM uses the description of a component's interface to generate interface mutants. Tests are assessed on their ability to distinguish interface mutants. Experiments conducted to evaluate the goodness of IM are reported. Analysis of experimental data suggests that test sets adequate with respect to IM are effective in revealing errors in components. The effort required to develop the tests is lower compared to the effort required to develop test sets adequate with respect to the traditional code coverage criteria based on control flow.

The rules for inheritance of classes with respect to data and function members are well defined. For example, the proposals for programming by contract in Eiffel ensure additional consistency between superclasses and subclasses. In object oriented design, it is common to capture the behaviour of classes with lifecycles which are expressed in the form of finite state machines. In this context, there are very few proposals for what constitutes consistency between superclasses and subclasses. The paper presents proposals for consistency between superclasses and subclasses in the context of the Petri net formalism, which is a form of finite state machine with explicit provisions for concurrency. The paper cites the applicability of these proposals in the context of network protocols and argues for a similar applicability in the context of object lifecycles.

This paper presents an object oriented framework for task scheduling. This framework can be used in domains such as process-centred software engineering environments, workflow management systems or project management systems. The framework was conceived based on both current methods for the development of frameworks and an existing architectural pattern for process managers. A prototype of the framework was developed using the Java language. The lessons learnt show the experience of extracting a framework from well-known applications that can be reused in practical domains. Thus, this work contributes not only in the production of a framework but also giving insights in the application of novel techniques to the development of frameworks.
