Data exchange by networks is becoming more important due to the growth of the Internet. One popular architectural style for distributed, loosely-coupled, heterogeneous network systems is a structure based on event generation, observation and notification. Based on the event service and naming service defined by OMG (object Management Group), we build an efficient and Internet-scale event-driven data exchange architecture on CORBA. The asynchronous message exchange system (AMES) provides an asynchronous publish/subscriber communication model and can communicate with legacy systems easily. This system was developed based on the Java programming language and Inprise Visibroker for Java product families.

The complexity of protocols supporting distributed applications leads to the use of modular techniques to design protocols. The object oriented programming paradigm provides a number of concepts to enable modularity and reuse. For example, languages such as Java and C++ have been extended with synchronization primitives to modularize code. The authors propose a framework with tools that complement such language extensions to enable compositional development of protocols. We advocate a two-staged design process. In the first stage, the designer develops code for a set of component protocols, each performing a specific subtask of the protocol. The second stage involves composing the subtasks to obtain the protocol for the entire problem. The composition is done with respect to a set of constraints that describe the interactions between the subtasks. We identify several composition patterns, each implementing a specific type of interaction. For each pattern, we describe the code required for its implementation and the transformations to embed this code into the component protocols. The toolset has been implemented using Java as the underlying development language.

A suite of measures is presented that addresses two problem areas within contemporary object-oriented software measurement theory and practice, i.e. the lack of OOA measures and the lack of measures for behavioural aspects of software. Our suite of measures is based on a formally defined model of object-event interaction, called the object-event association matrix. Generally, the objects in a domain or system are affected by the occurrence of real-world or information system events. A framework for measurement is presented that expresses and measures attributes (features, properties, characteristics) of objects, related to the data, function and dynamic behaviour dimensions of software, in terms of object-event interactions. This framework allows for early measurement because it applies to OOA, CBSE, and domain analysis methods that support the notion of events, or that support similar dynamic concepts (use cases, scenarios, actions) that can be transformed into events.

In the recent past, architectural languages have begun to introduce so-called connectors. Connectors separate communication code from the application-specific components, so that it can be easily exchanged. Unfortunately, however, communication code is usually deeply woven into the components and often has to be replaced when the component is reused in a different context. We show that standard connectors alone are often not sufficient, since they are too limited in their adaptation and architectural support. As a solution to this problem, we propose meta-programming grey-box-connectors. They combine the architectural support of black-box connectors and the adaptation capabilities of white-box reuse. They allow for powerful manipulations such as removal of interfaces or changing inheritance relations, combined with the exchange of communications.

A multi-MA (mobile agents) cooperative system leads to flexible and efficient solutions for distributed systems, but a lot of research is not suitable for dynamic network environments. Based on the modeling of the multi-MA cooperative system and analysis of MA behavior, we present some new ideas and a theoretic model on fuzzy knowledge representation and exchange, in which some key problems such as fuzzy belief composition and contradiction coordination are solved. With the help of simulation experiments on dynamic network topology discovery, we prove the model's availability and efficiency.

In order to express user interpretation (a set of user-specified GD-constraints (Z. Tari et al., 1997)), in terms of a directed graph, the definition of directed graph in graph theory is extended according to the characters of the user interpretation and the requirement of the problem; the node in this directed graph may be either an ordinary node or a directed graph. The directed graph (having been extended) expressing the user interpretation, is said to be a GD-constraint graph. Based on this, the features of the GD-constraint graph corresponding to the user interpretation without conflicts are extracted. Finally, the sufficient and necessary condition under which the user interpretation doesn't contain conflicts is given, and a polynomial time recognition algorithm whose time complexity is O(m*n), is proposed on the basis of the sufficient and necessary condition. Next, the correctness of the algorithm is proved and the time complexity of the algorithm is analyzed.

The paper describes cidl, a tool that helps CORBA developers test liveness properties in distributed systems. Whereas sequential systems can be tested by examining initial states and final outcomes, distributed systems frequently exhibit reactive behavior that occurs over time. Liveness properties capture such behavior. Testing liveness, however, presents a significant challenge because liveness violations can never be detected during a finite execution. We present a testing technology for CORBA based distributed systems. We define an extension to CORBA IDL for specifying a fundamental liveness property: transient. The cidl tool uses this extension to generate a testing harness for tracking liveness. We describe how to use cidl for testing and debugging and present a preliminary experience report.

In recent years much work has been performed in developing suites of metrics that are targeted for object oriented software, rather than functionally oriented software. This is necessary since good object oriented software has several characteristics, such as inheritance and polymorphism, that are not usually present in functionally oriented software. However, all of these object oriented metrics suites have been defined using only syntactic aspects of object oriented software; indeed, the earlier functionally oriented metrics were also calculated using only syntactic information. All syntactically oriented metrics have the problem that the mapping from the metric to the quality the metric purports to measure, such as the software quality factor "cohesion", is indirect, and often arguable. Thus, a substantial amount of research effort goes into proving that these syntactically oriented metrics actually do measure their associated quality factors. The paper introduces a new suite of semantically derived object oriented metrics, which provide a more direct mapping from the metric to its associated quality factor than is possible using syntactic metrics. These semantically derived metrics are calculated using knowledge based, program understanding, and natural language processing techniques.

The essence of counter inference is intelligence competition and critical decision making that will result in chained reactions in an open system environment. Intelligent agents are capable not only of carrying out negotiations but also playing games. A negotiation could have win-win (or lose-lose) outcomes while a game may result in win-lose situations. The paper proposes counter inference as a unified reasoning paradigm to allow intelligent agents to execute reasoning tasks in either cooperative or non-cooperative ways. Based on logic theory, we discuss a framework of counter inference. Some examples of counter inference are also given to illustrate its reasoning scenario.

In order to meet the requirements of building CORBA-based distributed multimedia applications, OMG has defined the CORBA A/V Stream Service Specification. However, it does not specify which network mechanism to use to ensure the QoS of multimedia streams. In this paper, an implementation model of IntServ/RSVP based CORBA A/V Stream Service is proposed. It first maps the application-level QoS parameters of multimedia streams specified by application developers into network-level QoS parameters. It then negotiates the QoS requirements with the IntServ/RSVP enabled network and reserves the corresponding network resource in the endsystems and intermediate network systems to maintain end-to-end QoS enforcement through the RSVP API. Also, developers can flexibly control and manage the multimedia streams using CORBA IIOP protocol.
