The rapid development and wide application of computer networks presents a new challenge to information security and network security. Traditional security models and single security technology cannot keep up with the change of complicated network structure and varied intrusion measures. Network security management based on policy has traits of low management cost, high agility and wide applicability. The mobile agent not only collects but also processes data, overcomes traditional agent's shortcomings, improves response and relieves network burden. This paper introduces network security management based on policy and a mobile agent into a new network security framework, and emphases its structure, control strategy and implementation.

object oriented design patterns have been proposed as an approach to encapsulate good quality design experiences that are proven useful in successful projects. A design pattern abstracts a solution structure that is mostly described in terms of a set of collaborating classes or objects. Composing these design structures to develop application designs is a tedious task that involves integration of patterns. We envisage that a tool-support for developing designs using patterns will facilitate the integration process. We describe a design environment for visual composition of design patterns for the purpose of developing pattern oriented designs. The tool makes the notion of pattern interfaces explicit and integrates patterns at the architecture level. It supports three hierarchical traceable pattern-level design models. The internal details of the pattern structure are hidden at high design levels (pattern views) and are traced to lower design levels (class views). Current visual modeling tools do not explicitly support the concepts of pattern views and pattern interfaces. The proposed tool facilitates the process of designing applications using patterns as design components and provides a mechanism to trace patterns through various levels of abstraction. We use an illustrative example to show how the tool can be used to develop pattern oriented designs.

To improve software productivity, we have to stop developing applications from scratch and make use of exiting solutions that have been applied, tested, and proven useful in successful projects. Patterns promise new design reuse benefits early in the development lifecycle. To reap the benefits of deploying these proven design solutions, we need to define systematic development approaches to construct application designs using patterns. We introduce a novel pattern-oriented analysis and design (POAD) approach that utilizes patterns as building blocks (components) at the design level. The approach glues the design structure of patterns at various levels of abstraction for the purpose of developing pattern oriented designs. We describe the development phases and steps using a purpose/process/product template. We use a running example to describe the application of each step. The POAD approach produces hierarchical traceable design models that capture interaction between patterns.

UML is widely used today for modelling complex systems. However, the tool support capabilities for UML is limited, partially due to its lack of precise semantics. There are some approaches that try to solve this by defining a formal semantics for UML, nonetheless it usually proves hard to implement the corresponding dynamic semantics. The paper presents an approach to define an executable semantics for UML that would enable tool vendors to build intelligent tools (symbolic execution, consistency checkers, etc.). We use Abstract State Machines (ASM) as an underlying formalism for our semantics definition, which is composed of static semantics and dynamic semantics. A part of the static semantics was done by expressing in ASM the UML meta-model and well formedness rules defined in the UML standard. The dynamic semantics is based on a set of behaviour primitives (time, communication, etc.). We define the ASM transition rules corresponding to UML actions. Using this semantic, we have been able to perform a symbolic execution of a UML model.

This paper presents a Unified Modeling Language profile for describing communications protocols. UML is a popular standardized, general-purpose visual language, but the current version lacks formal action semantics which is needed to define any complicated communications system. It is also difficult to generate an efficient protocol specific implementation from standard UML notation only. The authors developed a Graphical Protocol Description Language, a UML profile, to fulfil the needs of protocol engineering, UML stereotypes are used to add protocol-specific semantic information to class diagrams, enabling code generation for protocol implementations. GPDL contains graphical elements and a textual language that is used to describe actions in statechart transitions called the Generic Action Extension Language. A system described with GPDL can be converted to an implementation for any protocol framework. As an example a chain of tools which performs a translation from GPDL to SDL was developed by the authors.

The paper focuses on a CBS module of Knowledge-Based Tutoring System for Software Reuse Practices. The paper presents a public CBS using a validated Software Reuse Reference Model (SRRM). A CBS-SRRM allows the software engineer to improve reuse practice by being tutored with selected course material based on the user profile. This material is combined with actual practice based knowledge derived from different case studies from software development organizations' reuse practices. A CBS-SRRM provides software engineers with a way to be tutored using positive lessons learned by other organizations. Our research focuses on achieving more effective means for software development organizations to find alternative educational (training) solutions to problems in software reuse practices.

Nowadays, the main reason for the failure of large-scale systems developments is that the requirements analysis stage cannot produce complete, understandable, unambiguous traceable and testable system requirements documents. To conquer this problem, from the point of view of "requirements engineering" (RE), the formalization of the RE process is discussed from three aspects: a full process model, formal representation and formal verification. RE is taken as a process growing in the 3D space of sociology, methodology and technology, and a spiral lifecycle model of this process is given to illustrate its social characteristics. The recommended representation language is UML, and Coq is used as a component-cut-in modular formal method to carry out validation and verification. Finally, the alternating-bit protocol is presented as an example to demonstrate how to combine UML and Coq to formalize RE.

Based upon local libraries, component technology has achieved higher degrees of flexibility, customizability and reusability. However, it has little or no support for extensibility and evolvability. Web-based technologies make possible new classes of software systems supporting efficient, timely delivery of content to interested parties, and corresponding component models ought to support a more powerful and useful approach based upon distributed component libraries, radically changing the deployment and maintainability of component-based software systems. This paper introduces a metacomponent model that supports on demand, dynamic distribution and integration of distributed versioned, reusable software artifacts on user environments during runtime. The model combines hypertext-based Web concepts and mobile code abstractions to define a transparent, distributed component library for deploying and updating components required by software systems, ensuring the quality of delivered applications throughout their entire life cycle. What makes this approach unique is its support for extensibility and evolvability triggered by changing user needs.

Use case diagrams (L. Jacobson et al., 1992) have proven quite helpful in requirements engineering, both for eliciting requirements and getting a better overview of requirements already stated. However, not all kinds of requirements are equally well supported by use case diagrams. They are good for functional requirements, but poorer at e.g., security requirements, which often concentrate on what should not happen in the system. With the advent of e- and m-commerce applications, security requirements are growing in importance, also for quite simple applications where a short lead time is important. Thus, it would be interesting to look into the possibility for applying use cases on this arena. The paper suggests how this can be done, extending the diagrams with misuse cases. This new construct makes it possible to represent actions that the system should prevent, together with those actions which it should support.

Most existing role modeling techniques use graphic notations for role description. There are a number of shortcomings with the graphic notations. First, they are ambiguous. Second they cannot effectively represent dynamic aspects of roles. The paper reports our initial effort on a formal notation for role description and modeling. The notation is based on the set operations. By using the set approach, role binding or unbinding to or from an object can be specified unambiguously by set union and set difference. We can also specify role constraints so that roles can be bound or unbound sequentially, alternatively, repeatedly, or simultaneously. Similarly, roles of roles can be specified by set inclusion in relation to a new context. Role specialisation or generalisation can be described by set intersection of roles. Role compositions can be specified as set unions of part roles. In addition to the set notation, we have also adapted the formal method EMS to support static and dynamic description of roles. First, all class/role relationships are captured step by step. Second, all class/role structures are described by an object-Z-like notation, class by class and role by role. Third, all system obligations are specified using Petri net transitions, where pre and post conditions of transactions are expressed formally. Lastly, services and communications required for the objects/role instances involved in the system operations are described.
