Dynamic bytecode usage by object oriented Java programs

Java is an object oriented language that has grown in popularity since its release in 1996 and is particularly interesting because it uses a bytecode intermediate language to represent programs, so that the same program can be run unchanged on machines with different underlying instruction sets. To measure dynamic bytecode usage it was necessary to modify the source code of Kaffe, a Java Virtual Machine. A selection of programs was measured to compare the way different applets and applications use the bytecodes, and it was found that very similar patterns of usage appear in all cases. For the test suite studied most of the bytecodes were used at least once during execution. However a small subset of the bytecodes was executed with very high frequency. 40% of instructions executed either pushed local variables or constants onto the operand stack, merely telling the useful instructions which operands to use. This result questions the stack based design for the intermediate representation of Java programs, since the bytecodes only occupy on average twelve percent of a class file, an intermediate representation that is less compact, but executes more efficiently might be possible.

In parallel with the rise to prominence of the OO paradigm has come the acceptance that conventional software metrics are not adequate to measure object-oriented systems. This has inspired a number of software practitioners and academics to develop new metrics that are suited to the OO paradigm. Arguably, the most thorough treatment of the subject is that of the MOOD team, under the leadership of Abreau. The MOOD metrics have been subjected to much empirical evaluation, with claims made regarding the usefulness of the metrics to assess external attributes such as quality and maintainability. We evaluate the MOOD metrics on a theoretical level and show that any empirical validation is premature due to the majority of the MOOD metrics being fundamentally flawed. The metrics either fail to meet the MOOD team's own criteria or are founded on an imprecise, and in certain cases inaccurate, view of the OO paradigm. We propose our own solutions to some of these anomalies and clarify some important aspects of OO design, in particular those aspects that may cause difficulties when attempting to define accurate and meaningful metrics. The suggestions we make are not limited to the MOOD metrics but are intended to have a wider applicability in the field of OO metrics.

The paper investigates the applicability of the object oriented software paradigm to energy and propulsion system simulation. UML is used to analyze and design a simulation program for gas turbine engines. The engine configuration and algorithmic adaptability is on focus and the tools provided by UML are employed to investigate various innovative ideas of implementation. New abstraction of the engine simulation is manipulated and satisfying results are attained on the example. UML is proved a powerful tool for object oriented analysis and design.

This article traces the unstable semantics of use cases from Jacobson to UML 1.3. The UML 1.1 metamodel formally defined the 'uses' and 'extends' use case relationships as stereotypes of generalization, yet both received interpretations that varied between inheritance and composition, reflecting a large degree of confusion among developers. The recently revised UML 1.3 has quietly dropped these in favour of new 'include' and 'extend' relationships, which are styled instead as kinds of dependency. Despite this change, the deployment of use case diagrams encourages analysts to conceptualize and develop models which conceal arbitrary jumps in the flow of control, corresponding to goto and comefrom statements, and in which unpleasant non-local dependencies exist across modules. A discussion of examples reveals how a conscientious designer must disassemble use case models completely to produce properly-structured code. A radical solution is proposed.

Customizing component functionality to application needs generally involves inheritance, known to suffer from the fragile base class problem: changes in a base class may cause preexisting inheritor classes to malfunction, or even become undefined. We present a framework for binary detection of such incompatible changes at component (re)integration time. This avoids unexpected erroneous runtime behavior of the integrated components.

The CSIE (Distributed Control System Configuration Software Integrated Environment) system is a platform for developing control schemes in distributed control systems (DCS). By using the CSIE system, engineers of DCS can configure control schemes in configuration languages and define reusable scheme components in any scheme of the same project. The CSIE system implements the five configuration languages defined in the IEC 1131-3 standard. This paper describes one of these five configuration languages, SFC, and its editing, compiling and debugging strategies in detail. The development of the CSIE system is based on object-oriented technology fully and successfully. This embodies two aspects: constructing object models in the architecture of the CSIE system; and organizing the key algorithms in the object-oriented method. Benefiting from object-oriented technology, the CSIE system has the features of extensibility, adaptability, and reusability.

At the heart of the UML are a number of visual modeling notations for describing classes, states, and so on. The UML also contains an object Constraint Language, OCL, for adding precision to models. OCL can be used to add preconditions, postconditions and invariants to classes or types, allowing the precision of design by contract to be applied at any level of abstraction. This tutorial will introduce OCL, and show it in action on a small case study. It will emphasize how abstraction need not lead to a loss of precision, and how precision can allow powerful cross-checking of models, thereby improving the analysis process. Precision will be increasingly important as the software industry moves further towards component-based development. The case study will emphasize: why types are a suitable analysis-level abstraction;how type models can provide a vocabulary for behavior modeling;how type models can be improved with invariants;how state modeling can support analysis-level modeling;how state models and type models can be cross-checked;and how behavior can be expressed using preconditions and postconditions.

The separation of architecture definition language (ADL) and interface definition language (IDL) is widely accepted in the distributed system community. It separates issues of hierarchical composition and configuration from those of services, communication and synchronisation and thus eases reconfiguration without changing the interfaces and implementation and allows the change of services within well-defined configuration constraints. Our approach towards distributed system definition draws on the Darwin project's notion of distributed system architecture definition and on Eiffel's notion of design-by-contract. We extend contracts to deal with synchronisation and coordination at a higher level, explicitly targeting both large-scale loosely-coupled distributed components and tightly coupled parallel or multithreaded objects. In this paper we present a Java binding of the resulting contract extensions. We incorporate annotations into Java programs adding Eiffel-style assertions and other contractual constraints. Java component code and constraints are then associated to architectural diagrams in a visual programming environment. The paper illustrates the language features in a case study of a lift control system. Based on the case study, the component-based design approach is illustrated and the internal synchronisation of method execution is explained.
