We present a canonic model expressing the behavior of a system of communicating objects through multiset rewriting. Then, we discuss the integration of the so-defined model into the Java language. The choices and the restrictions made to implement the model as well as the architecture of the system are presented. Finally, we propose to use the prototype that we carried out as a coordination tool for communicating Java components. We focus on applications built around InfoBus, a standard package providing an event based protocol for dynamic data sharing between components. We show how our model can be used to coordinate Java events flowing on a software bus.

Small software systems implemented for small organizations exhibit many of the same characteristics of large systems as they evolve. Developers who produce nontrivial small systems use essentially the same approaches to achieve quality as developers of large systems. Small systems face many of the same challenges before, during, and after implementation as large systems. The paper traces the evolution of a small object oriented software system produced for a sunroom manufacturer from the original design and implementation through a decade of upgrades and ports to new operating systems. As with all such projects, it exhibits many common characteristics with other software projects. As with many projects, it has some issues that are rarely encountered by most developers. Ten years' experience with and responsibility for the same project, through its entire history, have given the author an opportunity to review his successes and failures. The reader is invited to share the hard learned lessons.

In this work we present SmartBooks, a new approach to support framework instantiation based on the active cookbook concept, extended with the combination of the concept of user-tasks modeling and least commitment planning methods. Based on this technique, a tool can present to the developer the different high level activities that can be carried on when creating a new application from a framework, taking as basis the documentation provided by the designer through instantiation rules. For example, if the framework is on the accounting domain, some of the initial activities may be to create a new type of account, or to describe a new algorithm to calculate the tax rate. For each of these high level activities, there is a list of tasks that the user must carry out in order to complete the activity. When the user selects her next objective, the tool is able to build the sequence of tasks that have to be done to accomplish that objective;this list of tasks is called the instantiation plan, and the process of plan creation is named planning. In this paper we present the main characteristics of the planning approach and a example of the instantiation tool being developed.

The evolution of software systems over many years often leads to unnecessarily complex and inflexible designs which in turn lead to a huge amount of effort for enhancements and maintenance. Thus, the reengineering of object oriented software becomes more and more important as the number, age and size of such legacy systems grow. A key issue during reengineering is the identification and location of design problems which prevent the efficient further development of a system. Up to now this problem area has not been sufficiently supported, either by methods, or by tools. We present a technique for analyzing legacy code, specifying frequent design problems as queries and locating the occurrences of these problems in a model derived from source code. We present our experiences with a tool set which we implemented to support this task by automatically analyzing a given system and detecting the specified problems. We applied our tools to check violations of a number of well known design rules in existing source code taken from several case studies, both from industrial and academic fields. These experiments showed that the task of problem detection in reengineering can be automated to a large degree, and that the technique presented can be efficiently applied to real world code.

Changes in the real world may require both the database population and the database schema to evolve. Particularly, this is the case in CAD/CAM and CASE database systems, in which the design objects constantly evolve in every aspect. On the other hand, the prototyping of a database design may also involve changes to both the structure and behavior of a schema. Unfortunately, most of the current systems offer little support for schema evolution. In this paper, we survey the recent development of the research in the schema evolution of object-oriented databases. The main issues in the current research are identified.

The paper describes our approach to adding "stored procedure" capability to a semantic database system using Java byte codes and Java's ability to dynamically load and execute Java code. Several steps were necessary: first we added a Java application programmer interface to the database system; then we created a database schema to hold Java executable code; then we constructed a Java class loader to allow code to be loaded from the database; then we enabled the creation of Java objects and executed the Java code for them. Our approach is not specific to our semantic database system, rather it can serve as a recipe for adding "stored procedures" to any database system.

In the development of distributed programs, two different concepts have to be considered, each being quite complex even on its own: concurrency and distribution. For both concepts, similar problems like synchronization and communication need to be addressed, yet they are treated with completely different mechanisms. The paper presents Dejay, a programming language based on Java that unifies concurrency and distribution into the single mechanism of virtual processors. This allows a considerable simplification for the development of distributed or concurrent programs and makes the transition from a local to a distributed environment seamless.

An item pool with multimedia data is a fundamental part of our project, Computerized Adaptive Test System of Chinese Proficiency. This paper presents a design of a multimedia item pool from an object-oriented perspective. It is stressed that the OO approach is especially effective in modeling and managing complex multimedia data. We first introduce our system architecture using the OO-layer method. Multimedia data organization of the database is investigated and detailed class definition is given. The object-oriented SQL-like syntax of the query language is also simply described.

Intra-class testing refers to the testing of the interaction among methods and data structures encapsulated within a single class. Our approach to intra-class testing is to execute sequences of instance methods that are derived from sequencing constraints and evaluate their results for correctness. These constraints impose restrictions on method behaviors and can be derived from a formal or informal specification of a class. We present an empirical evaluation of different method sequence generation approaches, and analyze their effectiveness in detecting software faults. In addition, we define a number of coverage criteria based on method sequencing constraints for a class and examine the differences between them.
