This paper analyses the state of the art in workflow management systems and then presents a cooperative workflow management model based on agents (COWBA), which has three levels of architecture. The first is the process definition level that defines properties related to activities; the second is the workflow enactment service level that includes instantiated agent, cooperative agent and activity agent; the third is the user interface and invoked application level. By utilizing agent and object-oriented technology, a cooperative agent, instantiated agent and activity agent can be built on the basis of the object-oriented workflow meta-process model. Therefore, the ability of self-organization, self-learning and coordination has been enhanced.

Multi agent systems are investigated from the point of view of software architectures, and formalized using a process calculus, the pi-calculus. To build a dynamic architecture for multi agent systems, two models for agents and multi agent systems are put forward respectively. Then a kind of architecture for multi agent systems, called CARBA which is similar to CORBA, is built based on the roles played by agents in multi agent systems. Finally, the dynamic characteristics of the architecture are analyzed as well.

We present a class based object oriented programming methodology, the Agent Class Methodology (ACM), a new kind of autonomous object generation methodology. The ACM specifies how to construct general purpose agents that can be used to construct a communicating, distributed, concurrent system. We explain the ACM's autonomous control mechanism together with the four-layered class inheritance architecture of agent class, and we also describe the features of agent class to demonstrate that the ACM meets with the basic features of object orientation. As shown by our application of ACM, the traditional object oriented programming technique can be promoted to an agent oriented counterpart by the use of ACM.

In an ongoing project at NHPCC (National High Performance Computing Center) at Hefei of China, we are building a debugger for parallel/distributed programs that run on a cluster of homogeneous workstations-Dawning cluster system. Such debuggers are commonly built by layering a sophisticated user interface on top of existing sequential debuggers, such as dbx or gdb. We employ object-oriented technology in our work by using Java as the programming language. This paper describes how we design and implement the debugger DCDB, the problems encountered and their solutions.

The paper discusses an asynchronous event based object oriented framework, OVOPS, employing the usage of design patterns to incorporate and interwork with a CORBA enabled environment. Distributed programming is constantly evolving into a very realistic technology which enhances systems integration through interoperability, adaptability and flexibility. However such advantages, coupled with performance, can only be gained by the proper analysis and design of the systems or frameworks in question. A critical examination would reveal that such a framework can be made realistically possible through the usage of object oriented methods combined with the elegance of design patterns and the advances made in CORBA technology. The described environment will ensure consistent creation of protocols and other such similar services through reusable object oriented components communicating over a heterogeneous network while addressing certain shortcomings, such as ensuring asynchronous communication remaining guaranteed and providing native event and message based features without resorting to CORBA based messaging and event services. It also attempts to shield the developer from network specific issues by providing a more generic but very consistent technique to interface to the underlying services. Two areas in which such a framework can be employed are described within the Intelligent Networks realm to illustrate the available methods and practices.

We explore technical issues in the design of programming tools, development environments, simulations, code examples, user interface frameworks and pedagogies for a university-level course on object-oriented software development. The course, M206 Computing: An object-oriented Approach has been specifically developed for distance learning, and is enrolling over 5,000 students per year (average age 37) in the UK, Europe and Singapore. The course introduces computing via an object-oriented approach. M206 is substantial in extent representing one sixth of a degree. It embodies a practical, industry oriented view of computing and includes programming, analysis, design and group working. Considerable effort has been invested in making the simplicity, consistency and power of object technology accessible to and capable of being applied by beginners. A diverse set of educational media, such as CD-ROMs, TV and the Web, have been deployed as learning resources. We describe the agenda for the course; its object-oriented pedagogy and our strategy for delivery. We explain measures taken to avoid misconceptions about objects, our analysis and design method, and the Smalltalk programming environment we have developed specifically for learners and which is crucial to our approach. We outline how our adherence to the separation of view and domain model leads to technical innovations. Concluding remarks reflect on the benefits a reflexive strategy, both in education and training.

The paper introduces a new model for inter-layer message communication called object mapping model that achieves separation between message preparation and destination selection. In this model, as opposed to traditional message delivery model, sender objects of messages need not indicate the destination objects of the messages. The messages can be intercepted by special objects called mapper objects. When mapper objects intercept messages, they can decide to which objects the messages should be sent. Using this model, layered cooperative systems can be realized by using objects to construct each layer and using mapper objects to realize object mapping relationship, and object mapping model has many advantages such as modularity, transparency, implicit invocation and dynamic mapping.

Workflow technology is becoming the key technology for business process modeling, reengineering and automating. During the workflow specification, enactment and administration, there may appear various types of metadata about workflow specifications and instances. A repository manager is, therefore, necessary to store and manage these metadata. In this paper, a workflow metamodel is proposed first. Then the requirements of repository support for workflows are explored and analysed. Based on the requirements, an object oriented design for the repository manager is presented.

Adapting a component to construct a new application is complicated. This paper first presents a component adaptation method-assemble, which solves the problems of interface matching, message handling, state monitoring, environment simulation and adopts a multi-agent adapter to build a flexible mechanism. Then a component reuse architecture, MAC, based on this method, is discussed. Examples of this modeling and related work are given.
