This article traces the unstable semantics of use cases from Jacobson to UML 1.3. The UML 1.1 metamodel formally defined the "uses" and "extend" use case relationships as stereotypes of generalisation, yet both received interpretations that varied between inheritance and composition, reflecting a large degree of confusion among developers. The recently revised UML 1.3 has quietly dropped these in favour of new "include" and "extend" relationships, which are styled instead as kind of dependency. Despite this change, the deployment of use case diagrams encourages analysts to correspondence and develop models which conceal arbitrary jumps in the flow of control, corresponding to goto and come from statements, and in which unpleasant non-local dependencies exist across modules. A discussion of examples reveals how a conscientious designer must disassemble use case models completely to produce properly-structured code. A radical solution is proposed.

Including refinement calculus into COOZ complements its disadvantage during design and implementation. The separation between design and implementation for construct and notation is removed as well. Then the software can be developed smoothly in the same frame. There is no corresponding object oriented construct in existing refinement calculus. The combination of COOZ and refinement calculus can build an object oriented frame in which the specification in COOZ is refined stepwise to code by calculus. Two development models are discussed which are based mainly on COOZ and the refinement calculus respectively. The first model is first discussed and then the data refinement and operation refinement is analyzed by example. The two methods of operation refinement for OO formal specification are outlined, and the frame transition rule from COOZ to C++ is examined.

The paper shows our experience in developing a trunking radiotelephone network information system using object oriented technologies. The developed information system has the network management responsibility and it offers a complete set of utilities to the network operator to facilitate its work. It has been necessary to balance requirements from the management point of view (real time interaction, statistics, etc.), requirements from the technical connection with the network (different technologies, buffering problems, etc.), and extra requirements imposed by the client (remote management option, easy to platform migration, etc.). Representation techniques based on object meta knowledge have been used as a powerful tool to provide a flexible and easy to extend mechanism to cover application design and implementation phases. The adopted architecture and the main components and their orchestration are described. The paper includes learned experiences, development criteria, problems and choices of commercial products.

Distributed applications are prone to drastic evolution during their lifetime due to user requirements, technological changes or modification of the execution environment. Application evolutions involve changes related to: (1) the application architecture, (2) the software implementation or (3) the physical location, of software components in a distributed environment during the application execution. Coping with such changes is recognized as being a difficult issue because new features must be integrated in existing applications at minimal cost and with minimal perturbation. We have designed an original algorithm for dynamic application reconfiguration, which fulfills the above requirements and we have implemented a prototype of this algorithm in a Corba environment. This prototype extends the current Corba programming model by introducing a framework for configurable object programming. The algorithm allows reconfiguration operations, such as the replacement, migration or dynamic rebinding of components. Our tools demonstrate that it is possible to reconfigure an application with minimal perturbation.

One of the most common client/server architectures in enterprise systems today is the combination of object oriented applications with active relational database systems. With this combination, developers have to overcome a difficult problem: the impedance mismatch between object orientation and the relational model. To date, there are several incomplete approaches for describing the integration of static and dynamic object aspects and active relational databases. An important issue missing from these approaches is the state synchronization between server tuples and client cached objects. In a previous paper (A.M. Porto et al., 1998) we proposed a technique for mapping the dynamic behavior of objects into active relational databases, using database triggers and stored procedures. The paper extends our previous one with an architecture based on a replication strategy that maintains server tuples and client cached objects synchronized with respect to state. This architecture automatically updates client cached object versions when their corresponding server database tuples are updated.

Proposes a new model, called the Drama model, under the object-oriented paradigm, for representing the rule base of general expert systems and rule-based applications. Based on the Drama model, modules of rules can be constructed as a reusable, sharable and modifiable rule package, which can then be shared in heterogeneous applications. To manage rule packages effectively and efficiently, an object-oriented rule-base management system (OORBMS), which supports independent procedures of rule editing and rule execution for various kinds of applications, is also developed. Comparing the OORBMS to traditional rule-base management systems (RBMSs) or knowledge-base management systems (KBMSs) from the viewpoint of rule management, it provides higher rule-base quality in five aspects: modifiability, reusability, modularity, flexibility and extendibility.

Summary form only given, as follows. More and more software developers are recognizing the need for solutions that make it possible to share code between different applications in the same domain. Reusing code increases not only the productivity of the developers but also the reliability and maintainability of the software products. Many software companies have ended up with a repository of enterprise components modelling the core business of the company, or with a product-line architecture that captures the common aspects of a family of software products. In both cases, object-orientation (OO) offers a technology that enables these solutions. The workshop studies the problems in designing reuse-oriented architectures (ROA) within the OO paradigm and the OO techniques that support this. The design of such systems is much harder than the design of individual applications, because ROAs need to be valid for unforeseen applications. Instead of a closed world of application concepts, the designer must analyze the variable aspects of a domain. The workshop covers a wide range of topics related to the development of ROAs, including: Design methods for OO product-lines/frameworks; Case studies of existing ROAs; Patterns and architectural styles supporting ROAs; Component-based ROAs; Evaluation of ROAs; tools supporting the creation and reuse of product-line platforms and frameworks; Documentation of product-line platforms and frameworks; Practical experiences with reuse in OO; and Re-engineering legacy systems into ROAs.

The developing environment presented in the paper is built around an interactive tool that can accompany the software engineer for the whole software development process of concurrent and distributed applications. This environment relies on a concept of active object that is used homogeneously from the specification of the architecture down to the implementation. It provides support for architecture design, behaviour specification, automatic code production, compilation, debugging as well as formal verification. First of all, the application architecture is built with a graphical editor, translated into an architecture description language compatible with CORBA-IDL, and used to produce code that may be automatically linked and compiled into CORBA compatible implementation. The debugging of a distributed application is supported by features such as event stepping, simulation of the CORBA mechanism within a single Unix process, code tracing, etc. The formal verification is supported by a translator providing Promela code that call be analysed by the SPIN model checker.

Research into software development processes has been active in the software engineering community for more than a decade. However, given the exposure of the Internet and the Web, there is a significant impact on Web-based software development support which can be beneficial to many software project managers and developers. Our project focuses on investigation of an effective Web-based visual environment to support process modelling for software project managers and process enactment for software developers in an asynchronous and/or synchronous manner. The research prototype is implemented in Java and the data repository used can be either an object-oriented or relational database.

A data warehouse is an information provider that collects necessary data from individual source databases to support the analytical processing of decision support functions. In the past, research on data warehouses primarily focused on relational data models. A novel data model called the composite data model is proposed to store the data in the object oriented data warehouse. The data model forms new classes, consisting of the attributes listed in the definitions of views, and copies necessary class structure from the data source. The query performance of the data warehouse can thus be improved. The corresponding view creation and deletion algorithms are also proposed.
