UML is a third-generation state-of-the-art object modeling language that supports object-oriented software requirements and design. Software requirements and design are very important which must be validated and verified before implementation. Testing is one of the best ways to do so. This paper considers the method for testing UML Statecharts. Statechart is an important formalism to model the dynamics of the system. However, so far, the testing problems in Statecharts have been investigated in the context of structural programming. In this paper, the method presented, which is based on the Wp-method, can automatically generate and select test cases from UML Statecharts in the context of object orientation, which will detect errors early on to improve software quality.

In parallel with the rise to prominence of the OO paradigm has come the acceptance that conventional software metrics are not adequate to measure object oriented systems. This has inspired a number of software practitioners and academics to develop new metrics that are suited to the OO paradigm. Arguably, the most thorough treatment of the subject is that of the MOOD team, under the leadership of Abreau. The MOOD metrics have been subjected to much empirical evaluation, with claims made regarding the usefulness of the metrics to assess external attributes such as quality and maintainability. We evaluate the MOOD metrics on a theoretical level and show that any empirical validation is premature, due to the majority of the MOOD metrics being fundamentally flawed. The metrics either fail to meet the MOOD team's own criteria or are founded on an imprecise, and in certain cases inaccurate, view of the OO paradigm. We propose our own solutions to some of these anomalies and clarify some important aspects of OO design, in particular those aspects that may cause difficulties when attempting to define accurate and meaningful metrics. The suggestions we make are not limited to the MOOD metrics but are intended to have a wider applicability in the field of OO metrics.

With agents being a kind of restricted intelligent object, it is a natural way to research the inheritance feature of software agents and integrate inheritance mechanisms into AOP. Based on BDI models of agents, the paper addresses the semantics of static inheritance and dynamic inheritance of agents. For static inheritance, the semantics are discussed from two perspectives: single inheritance and multiple inheritance. For dynamic inheritance, we identify and formally classify dynamic cloning behaviors of agent instances into four types: function split, logic split, preference split and retrogress split.

The existence of mechanisms to describe and evaluate assertions in programming languages helps to reduce the conceptual gap existing between the specification and implementation phases in the software development, improving both tasks. Java, originally used as an Internet-oriented implementation language, is becoming a general-purpose language, which unfortunately does not provide this kind of mechanism. We present a proposal to include assertions into Java, which also allows including the use of quantified variables in the assertions. The paper analyzes the properties that such integration must satisfy in order to guarantee a seamless interaction with the rest of the language constructions. The proposal shows how assertions can be used to synchronize Java threads introducing the notion of synchronization object and extending the semantics of preconditions. The goal is to increase the object oriented expressiveness of the language to describe concurrency.

The goal of the paper is two fold. Firstly we present a way of extracting interactions between objects and enclosing them by using multiparty interactions. In a multiparty interaction, several executing threads somehow "come together" to produce an intermediate and temporary combined state, use this state to execute some activity and then leave this interaction and continue their normal execution. This kind of approach has been considered in several papers but we go further and describe how failures in one or more participants of the multiparty interaction can be dealt with. General object oriented schemes for constructing dependable multiparty interactions (DMls) in a distributed environment are presented. Secondly, we show how one of these schemes can be used to program a system in which multiparty interactions are more than simple synchronisations or communications. We have designed and implemented a controlling software for a fault-tolerant production cell model developed by Forschungszentrnm Informatik, Karlsruhe, Germany.

The growing interest in using Common object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) to distribute application objects over heterogeneous environments has led to an explosive growth in the number of Fortune 500 companies deploying major, mission-critical applications using such client/server (c/s) architectures. Unfortunately, there is little in terms of literature that describes the complexities and issues encountered in scaling these architectures. This is due, in large part, to the relative infancy of CORBA technology when compared to other client/server architectures. The paper attempts to address some of the potential issues involved in large scale deployments of CORBA technology in highly scaled configurations. The paper makes some empirical assessments of appropriate design-guiding parameters for scalability, and discusses how to arrive at these parameters through a traceable lifecycle process. The paper also provides some guidance on what measures are appropriate to use when estimating an ORB's performance envelope, so as to appropriately extrapolate its behavioral characteristics in fully scaled production deployments.

In this paper, we present a new approach to integrate the two views of inheritance, conceptual modeling and code reuse. These two viewpoints are usually at odds i.e. to maximize reuse one should sacrifice modeling and vice versa. The integration of the two viewpoints in an object-oriented language is important, because both uses of inheritance are legitimate and useful. The integration takes place at two levels: code reuse occurs at the component-level and conceptual modeling occurs at the class-level. A component is a new abstraction mechanism similar to a class. In other words, we use two separate constructs to distinguish between the two perspectives of inheritance. The new approach enhances the use of inheritance as a code reuse and as a conceptual modeling tool.

Designing architectures for interactive systems is difficult: many system failures are due to the inability to handle the social and technical changes that occur during the development. We present two architectural patterns for interactive systems. We applied these to a short-term and a long-term development project. In the WebviseLT project, the conceptual model was modified to handle various extensions and to meet an emerging standard. In the Dragon project, the user interface evolved significantly over a period of almost two years. The application of these two architectural patterns demonstrates how focusing on change, or more specifically on architectural uncertainty, can be crucial to the success of a project.

XML (eXtensible Markup Language) has drawn significant attention as a standard for representation and exchange of data on the Web. But existing semistructured data models, such as OEM, cannot support XML naturally and fully. A new object oriented data model named XOM is proposed in this paper as the common data model for the Web data source. Based on rooted connected directed graph both cyclic and acyclic, whose nodes are labeled and edges are ranked, XOM can describe the aggregation relationship as well as the general reference relationship (linkage) between XML elements. Through ranked closure operation, both tree-oriented and graph-oriented models can be unified in XOM. As the formal foundation for query processing and optimization for Web data, a new algebra called XOM algebra, which includes six operations, i.e., object union, difference, select, project, paste and cut, is also proposed. In comparison with relational algebra, XOM algebra is more flexible and powerful.

Java is an object oriented language that has grown in popularity since its release in 1996 and is particularly interesting because it uses a byte code intermediate language to represent programs, so that the same program can be run unchanged on machines with different underlying instruction sets. To measure dynamic byte code usage it was necessary to modify the source code Kaffe, a Java Virtual Machine. A selection of programs was measured to compare the way different applets and applications use the bytecodes, and it was found that very similar patterns of usage appear in all cases. For the test suite studied most of the bytecodes were used at least once during execution. However a small subset of the bytecodes was executed with very high frequency. 40% of instructions executed either pushed local variables or constants onto the operand stack, merely telling the useful instructions which operands to use. This result questions the stack based design for the intermediate representation of Java programs, since the bytecodes only occupy on average twelve percent of a class file, an intermediate representation that is less compact, but executes more efficiently might be possible.
