We present LOCAL++, an object-oriented framework to be used as a general tool for the development and the implementation of local search algorithms in C++. The framework comprises a hierarchy of abstract template classes, one for each local search technique taken into account (i.e., hill-climbing, simulated annealing, and tabu search). Each class specifies and implements the invariant part of the algorithm built according to the technique, and is supposed to be specialized by a concrete class which implements the problem-dependent part of the algorithm. LOCAL++ comprises also a set of abstract classes for creating new techniques by combining different search techniques and different neighborhood relations. The architecture of LOCAL++ provides a principled method for the solution of combinatorial search problems, and helps the designer deriving a neat conceptual scheme of the application, thus facilitating the development and debugging phases. LOCAL++ proved to be flexible enough for the implementation of the algorithms solving various scheduling problems.

The design, evolution and reuse of software system architectures are always important research areas in software engineering. In this paper, we first propose the concept of a multi-level orthogonal software system architecture, then describe a methodology of evolving and reusing this software architecture. Furthermore, we apply these concepts and methods to practical work, and are confident that they work well in reducing the complexity of software evolution (especially for large-scale software) and in enhancing the reuse rate.

Intelligence plays important role in network management (NM), but traditional centralized NM framework has limited feasibility of implementation for it with core being management information base (MIB). AGIMA is one distributed computing centered NM prototype system based on intelligent agent (IA) group. The modal logic, which was applied by early scholars when analyzing multi-agent knowledge system, has many drawbacks, while this paper exploits high-level Petri net graph for modeling AGIMA. After giving net graphs of agent and agent group, authors present their mappings to asynchronous and concurrent behavior and show their capacities of analysis and verification of properties within distributed knowledge base. Easy migration to object and layered model also brings net graph auxiliary functions to system implementation.

Summary form only given, as follows. The tutorial will present an integrated set of techniques for performing competent and comprehensive Business Process Modeling. Concepts have been drawn from a number of sources, including Stakeholder modeling Enterprise modeling based upon value chains and objects developed at the GMD in Germany Event models from James Odell and the corresponding UML activity diagrams Simulation techniques for multi-server queuing network analysis. These have been synthesised and integrated in a manner which is comprehensive, non-redundant and practical for commercial developers. The dynamic models reflecting the business process are built against the background of a static business object model represented using a standard UML Class Diagram. The approach is architecture and repository based. Resultant models can be easily expanded into system level event models reflecting the full impact of operations on the underlying business objects. If desired, this can extend to model technical events, such as user interaction with a GUI. The resultant models are easily mapped to technical design architectures which are GUI, Client Server and Internet capable. The tutorial will cover the concepts, but not the detail involved in this mapping. A paper will be issued to attendees which covers the mapping in detail.

The development of large software systems demands intensive cooperation among multiple project team members with different responsibilities. The development process is often distributed across time and space and takes place within and between specialized workgroups. This necessitates finding appropriate answers to questions related to division of labor, to communication, and to coordination and cooperation in the planning, development and maintenance of software systems. Development environments that explicitly support group work are an important prerequisite for the production of high quality software systems. Most of the software development environments in use today support primarily technical aspects and have shortcomings in the area of organizational support. The paper describes a model for cooperative work processes in software projects and a corresponding development environment that provides balanced support for both organizational and technical aspects of software development. The work toward the conception of the model and the implementation of the development environment have been completed, and the evaluation of the proposed approach has begun. Experience to date with using the developed environment confirms the assumption that the cooperative, cluster oriented development improves both productivity and quality. The presented approach excels primarily in its easily understandable model, the intuitive usability of the tools and the comprehensible presentation of process- and product-related information.

Workflow technology, which is characterized by extracting process logic from individual applications and manipulating it separately to achieve organization-wide business process integration and automation, asks for an appropriate infrastructure support and encourages new system architectural styles. The paper presents a framework for constructing workflow based applications. Based on configurable models, software agents and business objects, the framework focuses on, in addition to supporting the basic requirements of workflow based computing, the flexibility issues that are identified as a deficiency of many contemporary workflow systems. With the help of the framework, a workflow system can be more flexibly composed at runtime according to specific and changing needs.

Data mining has recently emerged in a number of real life applications, such as banking, supermarketing, and interneting. The authors investigate a novel data mining problem derived from the applications of WWW. They present an efficient algorithm for solving the problem. The initial implementation suggests that the algorithm is very efficient and scalable in practice.

The current information technology trend is toward the distribution of data among numbers of autonomous and heterogeneous repositories. object Query Service is specified by OMG to provide uniform interfaces for users to retrieve information based on predicate based query, despite data heterogeneity. We propose a sophisticated architecture for querying federated information for the CORBA paradigm based on the object Query Service framework. The dissimilarity between our system and other implementations of Query Service, which focus on query processing and system performance is that we concentrate on the requirements, behaviors, scalability as well as the extensibility of the federated query system from different participants' points of view. We design a prototype called "Octopus" to demonstrate the feasibility of our architecture. We also share the experiences learned while designing the federated query service.

Contact Center-related activities, at the business level, are common regardless of parent organizations or industries. The implementation of such activities is unlikely to change throughout the lifetime of the Contact Center and therefore, it could be the basis ("framework") upon which customized solutions can be built. Specifying such a framework is mainly a business rather than a technical problem. Programmers create "what" a system does while business analysts determine "when" the system takes certain actions. Factors influencing the framework architecture are the requirements for small, mobile, intelligent components, the ability for run-time modifications, and a reasonable foreknowledge of the technology that will minimize risks. We present a distributed, object oriented, telephony framework based on Intelligent Agents and coupled with a rules engine. The goals are reuse, platform independence, support for a distributed environment, system scalability, and adherence to standards. The framework's core is an influence engine that accepts external stimuli and based on business rules, determines the resulting actions. This engine is an intelligent agent that can be attached to any object for which intelligence is needed and thus, it is able to create an integrated, customizable solution. We discuss our architectural decisions, limitations, design choices, and experiences in development, customization, and operation of the framework. tools and procedures used during implementation of specific solutions are also reported.
