A software system has dynamic adaptability if it can adapt itself to dynamically changing runtime environments. As open-ended distributed systems and mobile computing systems have spread widely, the need for software systems with dynamic adaptability increases. We propose a software model with dynamic adaptability called DAS and its description language LEAD++. In the DAS model, the basic mechanism for dynamic adaptability is based on adaptable procedures. An adaptable procedure is a variant of generic procedure (function) whose methods are selected depending on the state of its runtime environment. Furthermore, control mechanisms of adaptable procedures-including method selection strategies-are realized using adaptable procedures. Such reflective architecture enables us to write a dynamically adaptable software system in highly flexible and extensible way. LEAD++ is an object-oriented reflective language that provides adaptable procedures and their control mechanisms. We are currently implementing a prototype of LEAD++ as a pre-processor of Java. Using LEAD++, we can systematically describe dynamically adaptable mobile objects, etc.

The paper reports on ongoing research into the area of enterprise modelling. We have concluded so far that most enterprise models are static representations of enterprises that are expressed using diagrammatic schemes or computing simulation techniques. Their life cycle is usually very brief as they fail to adapt to changes that take place in an enterprise's dynamic environment. On the other hand, enterprise models are directed to specific business junctions, omitting the fact that relationships between various enterprise agents affect their operations. The paper reports on our attempt to provide a framework for assessing the impact of change that is caused by the formulation or deletion of relationships between agents, on a wider environment. The framework is being tested on supply chains. For the sake of consistency the authors refer to the automotive sector throughout the paper.

To design a software development environment with both the advantages of dynamic and static environments, we present the Freeze/Melt mechanism. Freeze is a process to convert a module designed maturely to native code, and melt is a process to restore a frozen module to the state of intermediate code. The essence of Freeze/Melt is to implement hybrid execution of interpreting and compiling in one environment. Aiming at OOPL, in this paper we first discuss two strategies of Freeze/Melt-freeze enclosure strategy and semi-freeze strategy, and then elaborate the dynamic and static interaction techniques, the key techniques to implement hybrid execution. Finally, MagicFrame, a prototype system, is introduced.

A number of software life cycles for object oriented software development (Fountain Model, Recursive/Parallel Model, McGregor and Sykes Model, and Chaos Model Life-Cycle) exist today. However, these life cycles have little or no support for estimating and monitoring progress during the development of the software. The ability to measure progress during the development is significant because it allows both the managers and the developers to determine whether a project is on schedule or not. Identifying that a project is behind schedule allows managers and developers to notify appropriate individuals of any scheduling and/or budgetary impacts at an early stage during the development and to determine appropriate course of action. The paper presents the Recursive Multi-Threaded (RMT) software life cycle which supports the monitoring of progress during development, addresses the specific needs of the developing object oriented software, and attempts to resolve deficiencies found in many existing software life cycles. What makes RMT unique from existing software life cycles is its use of a "thread" for partitioning and organizing software development activities. Threads support iteration and recursion, which are critical concepts for the development of the software. To implement the concepts of the RMT software life cycle model, we develop the RMT Tool, which is Java based. The Tool was used in an actual software development project in our software engineering course to test its functionalities.

In this work we present SmartBooks, a new approach to support framework instantiation based on the active cookbook concept, extended with a combination of the concept of user-task modeling and least commitment planning methods. Based on this technique, a tool can present to the developer the different high level activities that can be carried on when creating a new application from a framework, taking as a basis the documentation provided by the designer through instantiation rules. For example, if the framework is in the accounting domain, some of the initial activities may be to create a new type of account, or to describe a new algorithm to calculate the tax rate. For each of these high level activities, there is a list of tasks that the user must carry out in order to complete the activity. When the user selects her next objective, the tool is able to build the sequence of tasks that have to be carried out to accomplish that objective; this list of tasks is called the instantiation plan, and the process of plan creation is named planning. In this paper we present the main characteristics of the planning approach and a example of the instantiation tool being developed.

Integrating super server side tools and applications to the user's desktop in an easily used manner over the Internet is a challenging problem. This paper outlines a software framework DMUE, that is an ongoing project for making Dawning super server (one of the National Hi-Tech 863 Projects in China) with single-processor or SMP nodes cluster architecture available to end users, who may be situated anywhere and using any platform through the Internet. The DMUE chose the 3-tier client/server distributed objects style architecture proposed by CORBA. The key part of the DMUE is its middle tier JC-Glue, which must meet the requirements for interacting with the implement logic of the parallel tool and application objects on the super server side and the client side visual objects serving as user interface. Our case study, parallel and distributed debugging over the Internet, made us feel confident of that the industry standard middleware system CORBA coupled with the platform independence of Java language, provided innovative and viable technology to realize the usability of parallel computers.

Generic classes allow one, through type parameter instantiation, to obtain new classes that are adapted to different contexts. Therefore, genericity is an important support for class reuse. When the possibility of reusing a class to deal with elements of different domains arises, it is desirable to have the appropriated generic class. Nevertheless, the construction of generic classes is a task that must be planned in advance. Hence, the possibility of reusing a class in other domain can appear, but maybe the class is not prepared for this. In this paper, we present the definition of a class restructuring operator which allows one to obtain generic classes from non-generic classes. The operator is named “parameterize”. In particular, we present the operator definition for an environment that supports the reuse of Eiffel classes. First, we present briefly the operator and then we focus on those aspects concerned with how to obtain a restriction class to constrain generic parameters. All these aspects are introduced by using examples.

Class algebra provides a natural framework for sharing ISA hierarchies between users who may be unaware of each other's definitions. This permits data from relational databases, object-oriented databases, and tagged XML documents to be joined into one distributed ontology sharable by all users without the need for prior negotiation or the development of a "standard" ontology for each field. Moreover class algebra produces a functional correspondence between a class's class algebraic definition (i.e. its "intent") and the set of all instances which satisfy the expression (i.e. its "extent"). The framework thus provides assistance in quickly locating examples and counterexamples of various definitions. This kind of information is very valuable when developing models of the real world, and serves as an invaluable tool assisting in the proof of theorems concerning these class algebra expressions. Finally, the relative frequencies of objects in the ISA hierarchy can produce a useful Boolean algebra of probabilities. The probabilities can be used by traditional information-theoretic classification methodologies to obtain optimal ways of classifying objects in the database.

We propose a new design pattern named Answerer whose purpose is to eliminate the effort of recompiling a program due to changes of run-time environments. Most programs have to behave differently to accommodate with various run-time environments. Usually the behaviors of such programs have to be specified in conditioned blocks. When the run-time environment of a program changes, these blocks need to be modified and recompiled. The Answerer pattern applies the reflection architectural pattern to take care of conditional execution. The reflection architectural pattern provides a mechanism for changing structure and behavior dynamically. Based on this idea, the Answerer pattern provides: (1) a model of conditional execution and specification rules, (2) a mechanism to structure a model dynamically from information acquired at run-time, (3) a mechanism to create and execute a conditional operation from a model created from (2). We developed the Answerer pattern with the following two steps. Firstly, we found that it is necessary for structural items of (1) to implement the following information in order to implement the Answerer design pattern based on the above model and mechanisms: (a) information about environmental factors that should be observed; (b) information about behavior that should be executed according to the factors. Secondly, we created the Answerer design pattern that implements (2) and (3). We explain how we applied and implemented the Answerer pattern with an example of Java applet of DVD authoring tool.

This paper proposes an implementation of a Java networking application programming interface (API) for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. ATM is considered to be the network of the future. Since more and more Web-based applications are written in Java, it is important to support Java network programming on ATM in order to facilitate the development of World Wide Web style applications on ATM networks. In this paper, we first give a brief introduction of ATM networks. We then give an overview of the architecture of applications on ATM networks. Next, we describe the implementation of our Java networking API on ATM. Finally, we point out the weakness of the current Java networking API in relation to ATM networking and discuss future research directions. Our implementation provides a platform for developing Java applications on native ATM protocols and demonstrates the feasibility of designing a new Java networking API on native ATM protocols.
