This paper presents an integrated approach covering the fields of designing, validating and testing services and reusable service components. A methodology which applies concepts from the Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing (ODP) is introduced. As an important part to bridge the gap from the design plane to the implementation plane a language mapping from ODL to C++ is described. A CORBA based environment is assumed to be the execution platform. To ensure that the service to be designed meets the requirements of a potential users, a validation stage has been included into the design methodology. After the validation of the SLD model abstract TTCN test cases are derived from it semi-automatically. This paper also contains a new method for automated testing of distributed services through executing these test cases in a CORBA based target environment.

Real-time systems and applications impose stringent timing constraints on critical tasks. The design of such systems are more complex than that of conventional systems, because correctness and performance, besides being key system design issues, are directly related to system feasiblility. object-oriented application frameworks have been proposed for communication systems, distributed applications, medical imaging, and financial engineering. On the contrary, there has been relatively little work on an application framework for the design of a general real-time system. Facing the growing need for such systems, we propose a novel framework, called RTFrame, especially for real-time systems. RTFrame consists of five components: Specifier, Extractor, Scheduler, Allocator, and Generator. Within RTFrame, several design patterns have been proposed for real-time systems. Experiences of using RTFrame show a significant increase in design productivity through design reuse, and a significant decrease in design time and effort. © 1998 IEEE.

Service replication is a key to providing high availability, fault tolerance, and good performance in distributed systems. Various replication. schemes have been proposed, they are based on two streams of techniques, namely passive replication and active replication. This paper focuses on two implementation approaches of the passive primary-backup scheme, remote method invocation approach and replica-prosy approach, using Java RMI and Java network packages respectively. Issues addressed in this paper also include: the primary-backup;up protocol;restarting a failed server at any site;and a general naming service far the maintenance of dynamic memberships of replica groups. Finally, performance studies based on two implementation approaches are given.

The definition of classes in an object-oriented system is generally specified in terms of attributes and methods since they are represented in programming languages using these constructs. However, there are other information pertinent to application-domain-related objects (known as policies) that are embedded in methods. Since policies are complex statements that cannot be easily represented in terms of attributes or directly translated into method definition, they are usually realized by a combination of attribute and method implementation. Also, policies are highly volatile elements easily affected by changes in the business environment. One approach as proposed in this paper is to raise the level of representation of policies in class definitions. The purpose is to make policies more distinguishable from the rest of the class definition so that any maintenance effort in accommodating changes in policy definition can be reduced. This paper discusses how policies can be defined in a class definition, the advantages of the proposed approach, and how the proposed class definition can be implemented. An example from the Library domain is used to illustrate the class definition approach discussed here. © 1998 IEEE.

The pressure to reduce the time and effort required to produce and update software components, together with the existence of multiple competing component worlds, has forced the introduction of interworking standards. Unfortunately the interworking standards fail to suitably address the need for access to meta information. In the light of meta-data being increasingly important for component environments this inaccessibility of meta-data can lead to components being unusable by their intended clients. What exasperates the situation is that if access to meta-data repositories is provided using an implementation of the interworking standard, the information retrieved is incorrect. This paper describes these difficulties. To exemplify the solution, the construction of an adapter is described. This adapter provides access to the Common object Request Broker Architectures' (CORBA) Interface Repository via the interfaces of the Component object Model's (COM) Type Library. This solution provides access to meta-data which is essential if the full benefit of interworking is to be realised.

Currently the most widely used client/server architecture is composed of client applications that are based on graphical user interfaces and server applications that access data in commercial relational databases, usually in a remote server. To develop the applications, proprietary development environments such as PowerBuilder, Visual Basic, etc., are commonly used for their ease of use and for supporting rapid application development. Tied closely to the popular client/server architecture for distributed computing, these development environments utilize particular proprietary or standard components that facilitate interactions among independent programs. However, the proprietary approach makes it difficult for the developers to maintain flexibility and choice. For example, which DBMS is used with their applications and the generated applications are not easily scalable to an enterprise level. To date Java, a very widely used object-oriented language, enables developers to develop applications that are platform-independent, and supports its component software, JavaBeans. In this paper, we propose a development environment based on the component platform, JavaBeans. The proposed environment enables developers to develop client/server applications that are easily scalable to the enterprise applications and to increase maintainability and ease of use.

T++ is a C++ language extension that aids in systematic testing of C++ code. For each type t used in the code, T++ maintains the set of "typical" values of t, denoted by T(t) (typicals of t). We propose an object-oriented testing scheme in which each class t has a test method implemented as a static member function that runs a test script on each of the values in T(t). T++ supports this scheme by automatically generating a default T(t) based on the declaration of t and on the typicals of each of the types used in this declaration. This default can be easily tuned by the class implementor and users to reflect the particularities of the class. T++ also provides an easy-to-use mechanism for iterating over the typicals of a type. Thus, T++ gives a supporting environment for the design and implementation of test scripts with the familiar Techniques of equivalence testing, boundary value analysis,or functional testing approaches. Most language extensions are realized by either a dedicated pre-processor or by a modification to the compiler. Both techniques suffer from serious drawbacks related to the complexity of C++ and the accessibility of the compiler code. In contrast, the implementation of T++ sidesteps these difficulties by relying on a novel technique that creates a knowledge base of the source code from the debugging information. Manipulation of the software source code is done via a nontrivial exploitation of the C pre-processor while applying the C++ compiler twice: In the first application, whose sole purpose it do generate the debugging information section in the object code file all uses of the language extension features are cancelled. The debugging information, which also includes essential clues of these uses, is then extracted by a dedicated tool, and used for realizing the language extension. A suitable macro definition is synthesized for each of the uses of these features. In the second application of the compiler, each such use is expanded into an appr

With the development of the network technology, the scale of the information system is becoming larger. Component software engineering is the hot point method supporting the development of such kind of application based on network computing model. Java Beans is a standard for software components. For develop high quality components, this paper proposes a toolkit - MChecker for checking the consistency between the Java Beans semantic constraints and its implementation. MChecker uses a logic-based language - Java Beans Description Language for describing the bean's semantic constraints. Consistency checking is based on a dynamic model checking approach. A generator is used to generate the checker automatically for a source bean. A wrapper is used to make the source support the check process. We in the paper illustrate the system architecture, the key technology and the core algorithm. Some experimental results are showed by examples. © 1998 IEEE.

Any software development technology has an underlying model-explicit or implicit-of the development process. In order to understand more about the development process and the methodologies we abstract from these. The perspective chosen for the abstraction includes domains, models developed during the process and the kind of abstraction involved in the phases of the process. A supplementary perspective includes the phases in the process, the actors during the development, and the influencing forces of the quality of the resulting models and systems. In general the perspective controls the nature of the knowledge achieved by means of abstraction. The nature of our result from the abstraction over processes and methodologies is the structure and the interaction of the development process-corresponding to the two chosen perspectives. © 1998 IEEE.
