In traditional information systems, the user interface is controlled by one single application. In distributed systems, several distributed components may want to influence the appearance and logic of the user interface. This paper describes a unified dialogue architecture which enables several distributed components to control the logic and contents of the user dialogue while keeping the dialogue consistent. This architecture is a practical example of using dialogue agents, CORBA and Java. Details are described in connection with a large domain-specific distributed system. Discussion is also provided as to other manners in which this architecture may be implemented, followed by a discussion concerning other problem areas in which the unified dialogue architecture can be effectively applied.

We show how software architectural styles can be used to guide object oriented design. Design guidance is important, as the initial phases of software design significantly impact software quality. We use two different architectural styles to guide the design process from a formal specification to a design. Software architectural styles assist by providing a different level of reuse than currently practised in software design. A style provides a framework for top level structure and guides selection of components and interfaces. We show the impact of software architectural styles on software design.

Real-time systems and applications impose stringent timing constraints on critical tasks. The design of such systems are more complex than that of conventional systems, because correctness and performance, besides being key system design issues, are directly related to system feasiblility. object-oriented application frameworks have been proposed for communication systems, distributed applications, medical imaging, and financial engineering. On the contrary, there has been relatively little work on an application framework for the design of a general real-time system. Facing the growing need for such systems, we propose a novel framework, called RTFrame, especially for real-time systems. RTFrame consists of five components: Specifier, Extractor, Schedules, Allocator, and Generator. Within RTFrame, several design patterns have been proposed for real-time systems. Experiences of using RTFrame show a significant increase in design productivity through design reuse and a significant decrease in design time and effort.

Numerous experience reports indicate that prototyping is a serious and successful development strategy. The author believes that it is not sufficient to provide graphical notations for object-oriented analysis, but that the notation of contracts in conjunction with prototyping i.e., building executable models, is the proper technique for mastering complexity and gaining insights into a problem domain. He therefore developed a set of tools that is especially suitable for functional prototyping and for architectural prototyping. The underlying prototyping model is based on object orientation and assertions. The infrastructure tools are implemented with the object-oriented programming language, Python, while the high-level tools (assertion browser and graphically oriented debugger for assertions) are implemented in C++. The two parts of the system are tightly connected by means of the API provided by Python. Although the tool support provided covers the core tasks for functional prototyping and for architecture prototyping, additional support for evolutionary software development and for higher level techniques for requirements elicitation, e.g., for scenario oriented (use case oriented) analysis is desired.

object oriented software engineering (OOSE) is becoming a common approach to software development. As third generation OOSE processes are established (e.g. OPEN (I. Graham, 1997) and the Unified Software Development Process (I. Jacobson, 1999)) organisations will start to consider OOSE as a mature technology. This recognition will mean that more organisations will go through the process of changing their current software development processes. The paper reports on the experience of one team at a large technical firm as they adopted OOSE processes for a major project. The experience of this team confirms most of what has been previously reported in the literature, and adds two additional observations. The first observation is that other literature in this field does not consider team motivation as a factor that contributes to migration success. The second observation is that other literature does not consider the relative impact of some factors over other factors.

Since the coining of the term "Design Patterns" in the software engineering context, and specifically as related to object oriented application, there has been an increasing emphasis placed on the relevance of patterns in successfully designing object oriented software, by the recognition of patterns that can be applied for recurring problems. Patterns are applied in a business oriented environment, resulting in a framework that provides the core architecture suitable for use across a family of business applications. In designing this framework, we take a "framework centred design pattern" approach (W. Pree, 1995), with a number of patterns being applied as the application framework evolves. The language in which our framework is implemented is Java.

In spite of various research efforts to seamlessly integrate distributed object systems (DOS) and World Wide Web (WWW or Web), with the main aim of bringing together benefits of both, interoperability concerns (issues) in the integration of DOS and WWW have not been addressed adequately in the literature. Interoperability is the fundamental concern when systems, such as software components, architectural elements interacting with each other. To prove the adequacy of interfaces (bridges) between two interoperable systems or to evaluate the sufficiency of such interoperability, shortcomings of the interfacing needs to be identified. Moreover, a qualitative and/or quantitative framework is required to evaluate the two different interoperability mechanisms. The main focus of the paper is to identify and highlight some interoperability concerns that could emerge in the development of heterogeneously distributed CORBA applications on WWW. We further propose a framework for evaluating interoperability, that provides a uniform strategy to compare solutions that provides interoperability solutions.

An agent based virtual classroom is presented. The classroom represents the interface between the students and the virtual professor agent. Virtual professor agent is responsible for providing the personalized learning material adapted to student's needs. It is supported by a set of agents on different levels of granularity. The system's architecture and the software development process is object oriented. The virtual classroom can be used for different courses. The granularity of agents enables easy reuse of their software code for different agents introduced in the system.

One of the biggest problems that object-oriented developers face today is having to integrate at the enterprise level, object-oriented applications with widely applied and quality active relational databases. This paper focuses on the issues of mapping object dynamic behavior into active relational databases. We present a technique for expanding active relational databases with object-oriented behavior semantics, extracted from state transition diagrams expressing object life cycles. We consider states as first class objects, and discuss state class and event inheritance.

Mobile wide area networks promise access to information from anywhere and the ability to work in new and more productive ways. However mobile computing environments are characterized by significant and rapid changes in supporting infrastructure. They offer one of the most diverse and challenging environments in which to build distributed systems. We evaluate various communication styles operating in conventional distributed systems concerning mobile computing environments. We argue that those connection-oriented paradigms are not well suited to operating in a mobile environment and instead propose a framework of extended event service on the event-based communication paradigm. The QoS control of event delivery and the agent coordination based on a group model are discussed.
