In the study of heuristics for combinatorial problems, it is often important to develop and compare different algorithms, strategies, and parameters for the same problem. This comparison is often biased not only by different implementation languages, but also by different architectures. This paper proposes a framework described using design patterns, modeling different aspects involved in local search heuristics, such as algorithms for the construction of initial solutions, methods for neighborhood generation, and movement selection criteria. Using this framework we fix a basic architecture and thus increase our ability to construct and compare heuristics.

Conventional object oriented analysis delivers a business object model, which is transformed during design into collaborating class clusters which implement the business model's intent in the chosen software technology. object persistence provided by objectstore (object Design International, 1998), a leading object oriented database product, significantly impacts the design phase, driving the definition of implementation classes and their responsibilities, relationships and their implementation in the physical schema. Further, it is not the static characteristics of the database, but the dynamic transaction model which most dramatically shapes the persistent class model. Different transaction models for the same business object clusters lead to very different implementation object models. Failing to appreciate these forces on the design of a persistent schema can result in persistent object oriented applications with hot spots of unacceptable and unworkable performance, and equally unacceptable scalability. The paper surveys the experiences of an object database development project, and recommends ways of designing an object database application to avoid these problems.

Self-directed mobile software agents are a comparatively recent architectural design model. Mobile software agents, coupled with two other design metaphors, Place (or Service Provider) and Trader (or Yellow Pages Directory), can be used to construct processing architectures which are scalable, flexible, and extensible. Certain workflow problems (text processing and dissemination, claims processing) in which the potential processing paths through a routing domain are initially indeterminate seem especially well suited to an Agent-Place-Trader design architecture. This paper motivates the architecture with a description of challenges inherent in the functional requirements of a text processing and dissemination system. The paper continues with a description of our prototypes design, implementation, and object oriented tools used. An analysis of the benefits and limitations of using various agent systems in conjunction with the C++ and Java programming languages is presented. The authors draw conclusions regarding architectures for dynamic distributed processing in general and workflow problems in particular.

Service replication is a key to providing high availability, fault tolerance, and good performance in distributed systems. Various replication schemes have been proposed which are based on two streams of techniques, namely passive replication and active replication. The paper focuses on two implementation approaches of the passive primary-backup scheme, remote method invocation approach and replica-proxy approach, using Java RMI and Java network packages respectively. Issues addressed in the paper also include: the primary-backup protocol; restarting a failed server at any site; and a general naming service for the maintenance of dynamic memberships of replica groups. Finally, performance studies based on two implementation approaches are given.

Any software development technology has an underlying model-explicit or implicit-of the development process. In order to understand more about the development process and the methodologies, we abstract from these. The perspective chosen for the abstraction includes domains, models developed during the process and the kind of abstraction involved in the phases of the process. A supplementary perspective includes the phases in the process, the actors during the development, and the influencing forces of the quality of the resulting models and systems. In general, the perspective controls the nature of the knowledge achieved by means of abstraction. The nature of our result from the abstraction over processes and methodologies is the structure and the interaction of the development process-corresponding to the two chosen perspectives.

This paper describes a flexible distributed system. In general, a distributed system is needed to use the computer network efficiently. Computer networks are becoming larger and the structure changes frequently with progress in hardware technology. The distributed system needs flexibility to adapt to such a network dynamically. Our distributed system, which is applied to a client-server application, can deploy and move the server process to an arbitrary network node that is selected at run time. Such dynamic deployment of the server process is useful for some purposes. For example, total throughput improvement or load balancing. We implemented the system in Java and created some simple applications based on it. This paper also shows one of these examples and the effects of our system.

It would be beneficial if the quality of a software system could be estimated early in its lifecycle. Although many estimation methods exist, it is questionable whether the experiences gained in large software projects can successfully be transferred to small scale software development. The paper presents results obtained from a number of projects developed in a small company with limited resources. The projects were analyzed in order to find out metrics which would be suitable for early estimation of quality. A number of possible models were evaluated and discussed.

We adopt a component model based on object-oriented systems, introducing the concepts of components and their structure. A component consists of a dynamically changing set of connected objects. Only some of these objects are interface objects, and are thus accessible from the environment. During the component lifetime not only the number of objects, but also that of interface objects, and their connections change. To describe this situation, we introduce component interface diagrams (CIDs)-an adaption of UML diagrams-as a notation to characterize interfaces of components, their structure, and their navigability. We show how CIDs can be used to describe the in-house developed Open Editor Framework (OEF). Finally, we give guidelines that allow to map components described with CIDs directly to several component technologies, like ActiveX, CORBA, or Java Beans.

Software reuse is an important goal for every organization developing or using software. Recently, there has been progress on new ways to develop software popularly known as component based development (CBD). CBD is an approach to application development in which ready-made pieces of software are assembled together to enable the rapid construction of applications. The paper examines the role of appropriate new method's and tools in encouraging the wider practice of CBD. A new generation of methods and tools in CBD being developed by Sterling Software is described. As a counterpoint, the support for CBD in a leading UML class-based OOA/D tool is also compared and contrasted.

Distributed object technology is extending the traditional OO programming model into a distributed environment. It enables remote manipulation of distributed objects in a full lifecycle view. However, current technologies (CORBA or COM) either fail to address the object creation activity of the lifecycle in a balanced way, or are unable to give a proper model for implementing a federated object Creation service network. In this paper we analyze and clarify some problems associated with object creation activity and service network organization, and propose a group model for implementing decentralized federation of the object Creation service. After giving a thorough analysis and an implementation design for the model, we conclude that it is a clean-designed, very efficient, and extremely flexible model for our aim. Moreover this model not only ensures the location transparency and efficiency of object Creation service for programmers, but also gives administrators a flexible, scalable method for managing the service network, which may dynamically restructure itself.
