The pressure to reduce the time and effort required to produce and update software components, together with the existence of multiple competing component worlds, has forced the introduction of interworking standards. Unfortunately the interworking standards fail to suitably address the need for access to meta information. In the light of meta-data being increasingly important for component environments, this inaccessibility of meta-data can lead to components being unusable by their intended clients. What exasperates the situation is that if access to meta-data repositories is provided using an implementation of the interworking standard, the information retrieved is incorrect. The paper describes these difficulties. To exemplify the solution, the construction of an adapter is described. This adapter provides access to the Common object Request Broker Architectures' (CORBA) Interface Repository via the Interfaces of the Component object Model's (COM) Type Library. This solution provides access to meta-data which is essential if the full benefit of interworking is to be realised.

In this paper, we introduce SableCC, an object-oriented framework that generates compilers (and interpreters) in the Java programming language. This framework is based on two fundamental design decisions. Firstly, the framework uses object-oriented techniques to automatically build a strictly-typed abstract syntax tree that matches the grammar of the compiled language which simplifies debugging. Secondly, the framework generates tree-walker classes using an extended version of the visitor design pattern which enables the implementation of actions on the nodes of the abstract syntax tree using inheritance. These two design decisions lead to a tool that supports a shorter development cycle for constructing compilers. To demonstrate the simplicity of the framework, we present all the steps of building an interpreter for a mini-BASIC language. This example could be easily modified to provide on embedded scripting language in an application. We also provide a brief description of larger systems that have been implemented using the SableCC tool. We conclude that the use of object-oriented techniques significantly reduces the length of the programmer written code, can shorten the development time and finally, makes the code easier to read and maintain.

Many object-oriented modeling methods adopt state-based formalisms to specify the behavior of objects. State-based formalisms, pioneered by David Harel (1987), are a powerful and yet intuitive tool in modeling the dynamics of objects. However, when a real world object has a huge number (or an infinite number) of states, we usually have to map them into a relatively small number of states in practice. This mapping has been done intuitively and heuristically by software designers. There has not been a set of general and systematic rules for this mapping. We focus on exploring a set of such rules with which a system of a large number (or an infinite number) of states can be transformed systematically into an equivalent finite-state system with a smaller number of states. Examples are given and the suggested rules are explained.

FSTINT is a legacy computer application which has been in use nearly 20 years. FSTINT interprets encoded models of finite state transducers (FSTs). The combination of FSTINT and a particular FST model typically is used as a 3GL source code pre-processor to generate native calls to utility products such as forms and message managers. Because FSTINT is written in assembler language, it is not portable from its original platform. Eiffel was chosen to develop a platform independent version of FSTINT, with the goal of utilizing the same source files for FST models as the legacy system used. The new version of FSTINT was produced by a one-person development team and as a three billion dollar company's first Eiffel project. In this experience paper the product itself is described, as well as the approach to an object oriented, Eiffel based solution. The author's perceptions, both technical and cultural and both positive and negative, are documented as well.

Component based software architectures are becoming increasingly popular solutions for use in a wide range of software applications. Particular areas in which these architectures may provide improved software development support include tool integration, distribution and collaborative work support, and human interaction and end user configuration. However, a number of open research issues exist to do with the deployment of component based solutions in these areas. We review our recent research experiences in deploying component based solutions in these problem domains, and overview potential research directions.

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport (NUWCDIVNT) has developed a virtual digital oscilloscope that has the unique capability of tapping various nodes of a signal data stream in a digital signal processor (DSP). The NUWCDIVNPT Virtual Oscilloscope (NVO) is written in the Java programming language and is accessible using any web browser. The implementation includes most of the functionality found on an ordinary bench-top oscilloscope, including trigger source and mode selection, vertical and horizontal scale controls, and interactive cursors. The virtual scope is used to observe exercise data (real time or simulated), and for trouble shooting signal processor hardware via the Internet. The NVO software was designed using the Unified Modeling Language object oriented design methodology. One of the primary design goals for the NVO was to ensure that the design not only met the requirements for processing and displaying data from a DSP, but that the design was easily extensible for other data sources without a major redesign and re-coding effort. object oriented design methodologies such as inheritance, encapsulation, data abstraction and polymorphism enabled these design goals to be achieved. This paper discusses the role of object oriented design methods used to design the NVO.

Path traversals have been recognised as one of the strengths of object oriented query processing, as information retrieval can be achieved through pointer navigation. There are two existing path traversal methods, namely "forward" and "reverse traversal". We analyse and compare the two traversal methods. Our results show that forward traversal is suitable for path expression queries involving selection operations on the start of the path expression, as the selection operations provide a filtering mechanism. Furthermore, redundant accesses to the associated objects may also be avoided indirectly through filtering. In contrast, reverse traversal is suitable for path expression queries involving selection operations at the end of path expression, since the problem of redundant accesses to the associated objects may be avoided. From our analysis, we formulated two lemmas on path traversals. These lemmas are anticipated to be used as a foundation for future query optimization of general path expression queries involving an arbitrary number of classes connected in relationships.

The article reports on initial investigation into a software architecture for component systems. Described is a geometrically based, cellular framework for the organization of component computation and communication. These structures are called Cellular Component Manifolds. The starting point for this work is the observation that the concept of address space is a pervasive abstraction across all computing and communicating systems. Accordingly, a generalized model of an idealized address space is proposed. A particular geometry with a suitable algebraic structure is chosen to provide addressing within this model. This results in an n-dimensional, hierarchical, cellular aggregate address space that is also a vector space with "nice" properties. The address spare, when populated with suitable components, becomes a Cellular Component Manifold. A component system architecture is given. This software architecture consists of three major layers: component framework framework, component frameworks and components. In addition to providing a basis for component system organization, this structure natively supports a range of scientific and engineering applications. As an example, the architecture is applied to the problem of handoff management in wireless overlay networks.

Due to the highly increasing complexity of new telecommunication services and the distributed nature of them on the one hand and the requirement to come up with a short time to market on the other hand, new methods, techniques and tools covering the whole service development process are needed. The paper presents an integrated approach covering the fields of designing, validating and testing services and reusable service components. Therefore, a methodology which applies concepts from the Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing (ODP) is introduced. As an important part to bridge the gap from the design plane to the implementation plane, a language mapping from ODL to C++ is described. ODL is an extension of CORBA-IDL and allows one to specify objects with multiple interfaces. A CORBA based environment is assumed to be the execution platform. To ensure that the service to be designed meets the requirements of a potential user, a validation stage has been included in the design methodology. Therefore an (abstract) behavior description based on a formal language is needed and provided by a combination of ODL and SDL. After the validation of the SDL model, abstract TTCN test cases are derived from it semi-automatically. The paper also contains a new method for automated testing of distributed services through executing these test cases in a CORBA based target environment.
