object-oriented software technology has some significant flaws that are addressed with component technology. The foundations of software component technology and the possible and useful kinds of software composition are still an open issue of ongoing research. After a clarification of important issues of component technology and component composition, we present an object-oriented component framework that was developed to serve as the basis for an adaptable software development environment. The framework supports the construction of applications with a direct-manipulation user interface (especially graphic editors) and a code generation back-end. It uses a trading mechanism for component integration at run time, facilitates the separation of component adaptation and component composition, and incorporates an architecture that supports system evolution to a certain degree.

Requirements analysis includes activities that acquire and compile users' needs into a baseline document (a software requirements specification), and validate the document. This document is generally used as the road map for later phases during software development. It is widely accepted that prototyping is a useful approach for extracting users' needs, and that formal and semi-formal specification languages are valid approaches for creating rigid requirements specifications. However, both have some short-comings for requirement analysis. The authors present an approach that achieves a balanced mix of prototyping and formal specification languages to enhance requirements analysis. In addition, they introduce a supporting environment, called ROAD/EE, that facilitates prototyping based on object-oriented specifications. The basic idea behind ROAD/EE is that of executing object-oriented specifications directly and animating its result with shape and movement of icons. ROAD/EE also helps users interact with the prototype so that users can easily find errors in the specification.

Computational environments are characterized by islands of information. Data is spread throughout the computational system nodes and is controlled by several different data management systems. However, application programs require an integrated view of such data. Thus, it is necessary to build bridges to connect these information islands. Heterogeneous database systems, especially those object-oriented based have been referred to as one of the most viable solutions to the problem of system integration in heterogeneous distributed environments (HDDS). The implementation of such systems is still challenging. This work presents an experience of implementing one of such systems using the CORBA standard as the communication basis in an architecture that uses the concept of HDDS.

Component discovery is one of the major activities in component-based software development. How to find and select the required components published and sold on the Internet is likely to become a hot topic in software development. Based on CORBA's trader service model, a new formal description of components and a new searching method are presented in this paper. This should improve the capability, accuracy and effectiveness of search engines.

technology transfers between software and hardware engineering date back to a decade and a half. object-oriented technology from software engineering is one such successful transfer to hardware design. There is a natural correspondence between object-oriented concepts and hardware design. The work presented in this paper extends the basic application of object-oriented technology to system-level synthesis such that not only system modeling uses object-oriented technology, but the synthesis process itself is object-oriented. The basic object-oriented structures required for synthesis are defined. How designs can be reused by storing them in a design database and then retrieving them is explained. A simple implementation along with application example illustrates how object-oriented technology increases component design manageability, enforces synthesis efficiency, and saves design time and effort through the reuse of complete subsystems.

Within the field of object oriented type theory, much attention has been devoted to the notion of self and Self-types. In contrast, relatively little attention has been paid to this topic in studies on object oriented specification language semantics. In the context of language semantics, the notion of self poses two problems. Firstly, it involves an awareness by an object of its own identity, and hence a capacity for self referential method invocations. Secondly, the usual reference model for object identity maps object identities to object values. This means that an object's identity is not normally considered to be a part of its value. And so a value for self is not normally in scope. The way that a semantics resolves the scope problem can affect one's ability to use the semantics to reason about an object independently of its environment. The paper motivates the inclusion of a concept of self in object oriented formal specification languages, and shows how this concept can be accommodated within the semantics of object-Z. We show that a useful consequence of making objects 'self'-aware is that messages between objects can be 'tagged' with the identity of the sender object; this facilitates the task of reasoning about object interaction.

System modeling is considered as a key issue in information system engineering (ISE). According to the problems in current ISE, we propose seven guidelines for creating a modeling tool to solve them. Considering the achievements in the field of modeling the software process, we present the object-oriented Automatic System Modeling Framework (OOAMF) to meet those guidelines. OOAMF is rule-based, and it can guide users incrementally to create a rule-based object model (RBOM) of a target system. OOAMF remembers the domain knowledge obtained from the previous modeling activities and uses it to guide the following activities. This paper describes OOAMF, presents a formal description of the RBOM and demonstrates how the RBOM view is mapped by an object transformation.

Describes the architecture and several key aspects of FIODBS (Fudan Interoperable object Database System), which has been developed by the authors' university. This paper first presents a common object model, which provides basic object-oriented (OO) features for object identifiers (OID), attributes, methods, inheritance, etc. Then three main interface components of FIODBS are given, where Ftoolsuite, IOQL (Interoperable object Query Language) and the C++ API are used to manipulate data from multiple data sources, after which the buffer management and schema translation issues are discussed.

In this paper, the technology for assembling application programs using object-oriented reusable software components is studied, and an assembly language and an assembly system are presented. Developing software with the assembly language allows programmers to program with the components in the library easily. The assembly system can convert the programs in the assembly language into programs in C++ and can help programmers to debug new components.

There are two particular theories in object oriented programming languages: overloading and polymorphism. When a program has either of these two specialities and is depicted with a statechart, problems arise because different transition arcs are labelled with the same name but represent different duties on that statechart. What we call "general statecharts" (GS) can be used as a pattern to model the overloading and polymorphism aspect of C++ programs. Furthermore, method functions can be mapped to general statecharts to form extended general statechart (EGS). From these, state/transition trees can be generated easily.
