In mobile collaborative applications, collaborating agents can move across heterogeneous networks. The collaborating agents also keep changing their roles depending on the work to be performed at that time. In such situations, a simple and flexible handling of the transition between heterogeneous environments and roles is required. This paper proposes PolyConstraints, a design pattern to handle the generic problem of transitions across multiple network environments and roles.

Presents a new object-oriented language called VRML++ which extends the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML 2.0), a specification language for interactive 3D scenes on the Internet. The new features of VRML++ are classes and inheritance, an improved type system and dynamic routing. As a net result, we get type-safe inclusion polymorphism and dynamic binding. We argue that these features are essentials of object-oriented programming languages. Furthermore, using these new features, it is possible to define abstractions of routing structures which we call connection classes. VRML++ increases the reuseability, readability and extensibility of specifications while reducing run-time errors. Finally, we discuss our implementation of VRML++.

object oriented software development environments are an important aspect of object oriented technology. This paper presents the distributed object programming environment, DOPE. DOPE is physically distributed but forms a logical whole. Our aim is for developers to cooperate with each other to develop a whole system (or subsystem) in a network environment such as the Internet or an intranet. This paper discusses the structure of DOPE, its functions and features, and the relationship it has to other environments. The paper indicates some theoretical and technical implementation problems for further research.

object-Z is one of the object-oriented extensions to the formal notation Z. Though object-Z notation includes some temporal operators to deal with history invariants, it still cannot be used as is for the specification of real-time system. The paper proposes an extension to object-Z to specify real-time constraints. The novelty of the approach lies in the minimal set of syntactic extensions and the visible separation of real-time constraints from the specification of classes in the application. The proposed new language is called Real-Time object-Z (RTOZ). The semantics of RTOZ provides a consistent mapping between the class definitions and the real-time constraints. The paper describes the syntactic extensions to object-Z and illustrates the expressive power of RTOZ through the specification of a robotic assembly cell. A type checker for RTOZ is currently under development.

The results and new technology proposal of applying object-oriented technologies to embedded control software are discussed in this paper. The following obstacles exist when we apply object-oriented technologies to embedded control software: (1) the analysis and design method for control algorithms and the method of reusing them as software components, and (2) the size reduction method limiting the advantages of object-oriented technologies. We propose solutions for each of them. First, we extend the usual object-oriented analysis method; the object structures are identified based on the structure of the control algorithms. Second, we give a hierarchical implementation architecture on small microcomputers. We use assembly language at the lower level of this architecture, and the use of the C++ language is restricted to the upper level. We show this mixed use of an object-oriented language with assembly language gives the expected balance of productivity and performance.

object-oriented programming design (OOPD) is in the mainstream of programming design thought at present, but the low running efficiency of multiple inheritance and polymorphism has hindered the application and development of OOPD. The authors put forward the FastTable method after analyzing the traditional implementation methods. It can greatly enhance the implementation efficiency of multiple inheritance and polymorphism by improving the search strategy.

Most database research on modeling time has concentrated on the definition of a particular temporal model and its incorporation into a (relational or object) database management system. This has resulted in quite a large number of different temporal models, each providing a specific set of temporal features. This paper presents an object-oriented framework for temporal models which supports multiple notions of time. The framework can be used to accommodate the temporal needs of different applications and to derive existing temporal models by making a series of design decisions through subclass specialization. It can also be used to derive a series of new, more general temporal models that meet the needs of a growing number of emerging applications.

The Eliot system visualizes program execution; it concentrates on program logic, i.e., dynamic semantics of a program. The Eliot approach to program visualization is based on visual data types capable of animating their instances. The architecture of Eliot applies the object-oriented approach by implementing visual data types as classes of self-animated objects. The benefits of the object-oriented approach to program visualization are clear; in addition to providing a programmer with a flexible and interactive animation environment, it shortens the construction time of animation from hours to minutes. This makes Eliot an interesting choice for uses in education, program development, and visual debugging, as well as algorithm research.

In this paper, an object-oriented (OO) framework for integrating heterogeneous database schemas for data mining is proposed. The framework is constructed on the basis of the attribute equivalence theory. The work is motivated by the observation that current data mining systems are best for knowledge discovery tasks in single databases. However, the rich sources of information provided by an increasingly large number of distributed and heterogeneous databases present an urgent need for effective and efficient mining systems that can operate on multiple databases. In our framework, OO techniques are used. The intention is to take advantage of features offered by the OO methodology. It is shown that they can be utilised effectively in the implementation.

Over the last decade object-oriented development methods and techniques have gained rapid acceptance in many areas, such as graphical user interfaces and network programming. Currently there are two major standard architectures available to support distributed object-oriented programming: the object Management Group's Common object Request Broker Architecture and Microsoft's Distributed Component object Model. While both standards address the same problems, i.e., language, hardware and operating system independence, they provide different features for application developers. This paper provides an overview of both architectures and a comparison of program development under each. Conclusions are drawn about the suitability of each architecture for different programming requirements based on our experience developing systems.
