Function point analysis measures user requested functionality independent of the technology used for implementation. Software applications are represented in an abstract model that contains the items that contribute to the functional size. When function point analysis is applied to object-oriented software, the concepts of the development method have to be mapped into that abstract model. The article proposes a mapping of the use case driven object-oriented software engineering method by Jacobson et al. (1992) into the abstract function point model. The mapping has been formulated as a small set of concise rules that support the actual measurement process. The work demonstrates the applicability of function point analysis as a measure of functional software size to the OO-Jacobson approach. This supports the thesis that function point analysis measures independent of the technology used for implementation and that it can be used in the object-oriented paradigm.

We describe the design and implementation of objectstream, a system for automatic generation of stream I/O primitives for complex C++ objects. The system consists of a parser-based program generator and a generic object I/O library. The program generator pre-processes C++ class declarations to produce class-specific routines that, when executed with application programs, assists the class-neutral generic library to perform 1/0 operations for objects of the pre-processed classes. objectstream is novel in that it is non-intrusive. It lets programmers keep the original class declarations for application development, without requiring the classes to be modified for I/O or to be derived from a persistent base class. This makes easy the task of managing application source code, and ensures compatibility of objects produced with and without the added I/O capability. The implementation of objectstream is compiler- and machine-independent, and its operation requires little guidance from the programmers. We describe in this paper the motivations behind objectstream, our development strategies, and several interesting implementation issues. A working example is included to illustrate the objectstream system. © 1998 IEEE.

The author describes how one can express homomorphic translations with an object-oriented design. This includes a uniform approach to the addition of external functionality to data structures. He presents the tradeoffs of distributing intrinsic and extrinsic properties to data structures and external functions respectively. A mini-architecture (design pattern) for the emulation of multi-dispatching functions is presented in order to allow the definition of local translation functions. Actually, he presents a variant of the Visitor pattern, but adds the idea of maintaining a homomorphism between source and target and introduces a target structure between source structure and target semantics. Combined, these concepts pave the way to incremental evaluation.

Java is becoming increasingly important as a programming language for applications based on the network centric computing paradigm. While more and more applications are written an Java, a large number of working C++ implementations for standard tasks still exist. Based on a domain model for language interoperability, the paper derives the structure of the necessary bridging code between C++ and Java and describes a mechanism, as well as its implementation for automatic bridging code generation. The paper then provides a top down overview of the bridging code layers, describing how C++ features are remodeled, and how C++ definitions are automatically mapped to Java.

As part of a work that models objects of a class in a multidimensional space on state criteria, and provides a neat and powerful inheritance mechanism, the paper focuses on one aspect of such modeling, namely the mixin concept. The problem is how to isolate in a reusable way supplements of behavior (e.g. Bounded) that are not meaningful by themselves but only when combined with the behavior of regular objects having certain properties (i.e. instances of Stack Queue...). The concept's novelty lies not in its innovative upscaling to multidimensional objects. The paper describes the mixins proper (as receptacles of behavioral supplements), and an operator, dubbed derivation, for attaching these mixins to classes and combining the involved behaviors. Central to modeling, it is shown, is the destination of each transition outcoming from the hook node of acceptable base graphs.

object-oriented software development follows a path of iterative evolution from the initial design to a mature system. The evolution of an object-oriented system involves two models: the design model and the implementation model. Software design and implementation processes are intertwined. This study uses object-oriented metrics to track the evolution of an object-oriented system. The empirical observations in the study indicate that the evolution of the design and implementation models are not totally independent. Although the evolution of design is relatively independent of the implementation evolution, the implementation evolution may influence the design evolution.

We describe several design patterns found in garbage collectors. The patterns we present are divided into two groups. The first group are two new design patterns: Rootset and TriColour that have been used in the garbage collection domain for up to 20 years. The second group of patterns are reported in the GoF book, such as Adapter, Facade, Iterator and Proxy, but we examine their use in the garbage collection domain. These patterns can be used by language implementers to provide a less efficient, but simpler and more flexible way of implementing and reusing garbage collectors in programming languages than current low-level and nonportable methods.

Reusability has been the main promise object-oriented programming gave to software developers. However, it turned out that object-oriented programming did not bring up measurably more reuse than modular programming. One reason for this was that inheritance had never been examined in detail which introduced unexpected exceptions. In (Zimmerman et al., 1996) this examination had been done at first. Since then it was possible to give rules for the correct use or the misuse of polymorphism. Zimmerman showed further how robust class hierarchies can be constructed. This paper describes a method for the specification and generation of robust hierarchies along a certain set of properties.

This paper describes an object-oriented development method and an optimization method for embedded control systems. In embedded control systems development, specifications are changed frequently and there is strong constraint of memory. We present an object-oriented analysis and design method based on polymorphism patterns. Polymorphism patterns are standard of method interfaces which are shared by several objects. With this method, a system is constructed with objects which have polymorphism patterns. This system ensures reusability because it easy to replace objects where the specification of the system is changed. object-oriented technology has several functions, such as instantiation, inheritance and polymorphism, where functions are implemented with both method tables and inheritance hierarchy tables. These mechanisms are needless in the automotive engine control application which execute fixed control flow. Our optimization method eliminates these mechanisms and reduces executable code size. We have applied the techniques to the development of automotive engine control applications.

Considering the systematization of software reuse, it is important to have automated support, such as that provided by software development environments (SDEs). However, in order to have a reuse-based SDE (RBSDE), an adequate software development process, methods and tools that consider software reuse activities must have been previously defined. We describe in this paper the Memphis environment, a RBSDE under development at the Computer Science Department of COPPE/UFRJ (the Computer Science Department of the Federal University of Rio de Jnneiro) that explores object-oriented (OO) technology in order to achieve its objectives. It supports the activities involved in software management, construction, quality assurance and reuse by providing an integrated set of tools and a reuseable component repository.
