The object oriented methodology is employed to build an environment database for path planning of autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs). The object oriented environment database (OOED) consists of spatial objects made up of Road, Fork, Region, Obstacle, etc. with non spatial attributes. An effective path planning algorithm has been presented that comprises two steps: the first is path finding, that can find all possible paths from the start point to the goal by a reasoning method based on the OOED; and the second is path selection that chooses an optimal route by the cost criticism based on human imitation method. The results of simulation have demonstrated that the OOED provides an efficient means for AGV path planning.

The reengineering steps for a CASE tool called IDEF0-MAKER include analyzing and decomposing the original system, designing abstract frameworks and putting the decomposed subsystems into the frameworks. A new technology, design patterns, has been applied to this work. The consequences of using these patterns are successful: they improve the understanding, maintainability, reusability and evolution of our software.

This paper outlines the design and implementation of the PCLAgenda, a process-centered support environment embedded in the SCOP system. Its functionality includes defining the software development process, guiding and controlling the software development steps, automating some routing work, and supporting cooperative work among team individuals. The kernel of PCLAgenda is the three-dimensional process model based on the SCOP software development methodology.

The association between an instance and a class is exclusive and permanent in many class based, object oriented database systems. Therefore, these systems have serious difficulties for applications in which objects take on different and multiple roles over time. Recently, some researchers have proposed the use of roles to tackle these problems. Although many of them have realized the importance and difficulties to solve the type problems caused by roles, formal semantics and type issues of roles have not been addressed. We develop an expressive yet semantically sound type calculus for objects with multiple roles. While the rich role modeling constructs are introduced, the calculus can still be expressed in a neat way by using the polymorphism of overloaded functions. We show the important properties of the calculus which include Subject Reduction, Strong Normalization and Confluence. The calculus described in the paper provides a foundation for object-with-role models. We show that the calculus is general enough to be applied to various role models with little modification.

The paper generalizes the linearization technique known in Lisp-based languages to multidimensional objects. A general principle is defined and applied to memory representations and methods. Linearization is done on a dimension-per-dimension basis. Such application, simplified in the case of representations, has to be complemented in the case of methods, first by a condition verified in practice and secondly by a rule, quite simple to apply. Combinations become purely declarative, with no further need for the OOP classical imperative anti-modular send-super construct (fall-next-method in CLOS, super in Smalltalk). Quite sophisticated combination methods with multiple roles as done in CLOS are supported. Multiple dispatch is also supported. This paper also looks at the desirable properties of a linearization algorithm fit for use in this context. Besides stability and monotonicity, already known, a third property is brought into light. Because it conflicts with monotonicity, a refined study was conducted: the paper proposes three candidate solutions, and selects the best compromise.

The author discusses how one can generate wrapper code that allows existing C++ class libraries to be accessed from scripting languages such as Tcl and Perl. Previously suggested approaches to this problem are reviewed and compared. He points out some problems related to the C++ object model and the difficulties introduced by advanced C++ constructs such as templates, nested types, type definitions, temporaries, implicit casts, multiple inheritance and overloading. He argues that it is necessary to support all of these features, as they are used frequently in all modern C++ libraries. A new system called TIDE, which integrates C++ and Tcl, is presented and he describes the ideas behind its design. As an example, he shows how TIDE can be used for accessing the ISO C++ draft standard library.

Generic classes and especially generic collection libraries can be of great benefit for efficient software production. Constrained genericity is used to guarantee that the type provided as a parameter to a generic class such as a sorted list will offer the methods that class requires. We argue that constrained genericity is not really the appropriate mechanism for this purpose since it restricts a generic class to one kind of use for each element type. We introduce the concept of 'generic procedure parameters' which allow the properties of a collection class to be specified in the instantiation rather than via the properties of the elements. We show that the concept is very efficiently implementable, more powerful than constrained genericity and more useful for the practical construction of complex data collections.

The adoption of distributed computing has brought with it the problem of interoperability. Today, program developers need to interoperate over large and complex heterogeneous networks. Dealing with the interoperability problems that these networks can provide leads to increasing the complexity of the overall system. This complexity can be significantly reduced through the introduction of an interface definition language which adds an abstraction layer capable of handling many of the underlying problems. Two major interface definition languages being used today include CORBA's Interface Definition Language (IDL) and Microsoft's Interface Definition Language (MIDL) associated with COM/DCOM. We provide an overview of both interface definition languages and a comparison between them based on our experiences developing distributed systems using both. We draw some conclusions about the strengths and weaknesses of both.

Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) has been selected as the core technology in high speed networks. The paper presents an object-oriented model OOATM for the development of ATM protocols. The model consists of four kinds of entities: (1) interface entities provide service primitives to upper layer and generate the corresponding protocol data unit (PDU), (2) connection entities manipulate communication services, (3) state entities deal with state transitions and the corresponding services, and (4) message entities describe the format and contents of the protocol data unit (PDU) in a protocol. The authors have constructed a class library for these entities and the paper presents an approach to construct an ATM protocol with the library. An example of constructing a signalling protocol shows that this approach provides a high level model and reusability.

It has been common knowledge for most researchers that object oriented databases should support relational operations effectively and efficiently, but it has not been resolved adequately. The major reason is that the object oriented data model lacks a solid theoretical foundation, as a relational model does. In order to remedy that problem, the paper presents a directed graph based association algebra that is an important improvement on a non directed graph based association algebra worked out by S.Y.W. Su et al. (1993). An important type of association pattern is introduced as well, which makes the association algebra more practical. The directed graph based association algebra can reflect more precisely the intrinsic quality of the object oriented model and is more advantageous to query processing and optimization of objects than its non directed graph based counterpart.
