Design patterns have received a lot of attention recently, especially in the object-oriented (OO) community, but there are still not many very practical design patterns. What role design patterns can play and what developers should pay attention to in pattern-based software development requires a lot of practice to find out. In the development of the JB (Jade Bird) system, which is a large-scale software development environment supported by government, we adopted the OO development method complemented with design patterns. This paper first introduces some uses of design patterns in the design of the JBOO system (a key subsystem of the JB system), then proceeds by briefly describing our experience of using design patterns and some points that we think should be paid attention to. In our experience, the research on design patterns is important and worth continuing with.

Interactive systems enhance the usability of the application, in the sense of providing a convenient access to their services, allowing the user to spend less time learning the application and to produce results quickly. The graphical user-interface is the vehicle for achieving this usability. Frameworks, or semi-finished generic architectures, have been successfully used in the development of graphical user-interfaces. Besides, multi-agent models describe the architecture of interactive systems. Moreover, this architecture must reflect the paradigm of the separation between the abstract or semantic aspects of the system and its presentation to the final user. The authors' main purpose is to discuss an experience in developing object-oriented graphical user-interfaces using a framework for interface agents. In particular, a framework expressing the behavior of the PAC (Presentation-Abstraction-Control) model is specified in a pseudoformal language, a small application, a simplified graphical editor is implemented in Java, according to the framework's specification. The benefits and drawbacks of using this framework are discussed and a comparison with the well known MVC (Model-View-Controller) framework is also established. The goals are to study the facility of implementing in Java the patterns of the framework and to experiment the ease of coding in Java, directly from the framework's specification.

YHCS2 is a distributed client/server (C/S) computing platform which has been developed by using CORBA technology and agent mechanisms on a open network computing environment. It is not only easy to construct an application's integrated framework and components, but also to support cooperative work. In addition, YHCS2 can also interconnect with other application integration technology, distributed object technology and middleware systems. In this paper, we introduce the research goal, design idea, computing model and architecture of YHCS2, and we also specify the implementation method and technology of both the integrated middleware and soft components, which are the two main parts of which YHCS2 is composed.

With the growth in popularity of the object-oriented paradigm, the Department of Software Development at Monash University decided to teach object-oriented programming to the introductory programming students. The first year programming subjects were completely restructured and rewritten. It was decided to introduce the object-oriented paradigm after the students have had one semester of procedural programming experience in C++. Teaching object oriented principles in C++ has presented many challenges. The students find the complicated language syntax difficult. They also show a reluctance to move from the procedural to the object-oriented paradigm. However, with support and advice from education experts we have successfully addressed these problems. Different teaching approaches and techniques have been used. Small discussion classes were introduced to provide a forum for the consolidation of ideas presented in lectures, away from the distraction of computers. Extra support was given to the students in the form of a special World Wide Web page and a help desk. A concurrent research project has enabled close monitoring of the effectiveness of our teaching programme. In spite of the difficulties we have faced, the student results for 1995 and 1996 show an improvement in student performance over previous years.

Patterns are investigated in relation to the development of applications and frameworks, and characteristics of patterns are presented in the context of analysis, design and implementation. The results are illustrated using a framework for virtual machines. The main conclusion is that different pattern characteristics can be identified in analysis, design, and implementation of applications and frameworks. Patterns can be applied to describe perceived structures in the problem domain, logical structures in the abstract description of a software system, and structures in the program code. Patterns applied in application development focus on structures among concrete and specific concepts, whereas patterns applied in framework development focus on structures among abstract and generic concepts. Individual patterns can be preserved, transformed, or replaced during a software development process.

We describe how we achieve information systems integration (SI) in a university, based on our case study. As an introduction we briefly describe why SI is desirable, how others have achieved it and the uniqueness of our case study. We then discuss the advantages and disadvantages of existing mechanisms of SI and try to justify our approach. We conclude with suggestions on how our SI interface can help complement existing mechanisms. The university ISs are a mixture of both OO databases and relational databases systems. If all the IS were to be developed using object oriented technology, CORBA, an object request broker, would be able to handle all data and process requests. In our case, which is most common in other domains, information systems were developed using both relational databases as well as object oriented databases. CORBA only recognizes objects and not tables. Therefore, we need a conversion box that can accept objects and changes it to tables and vice versa. We call this conversion box-Integration Facilitator (InFac). It is designed to handle all transactions between each member IS and is transparent to all users. Transactions include all requests for information and also concurrent updates of common data/objects.

The paper explores a uniform framework for processing temporal queries in the context of object oriented databases. A temporal object data model is developed by extending the unified model of RDBs and OODBs from UniSQL/X with a time dimension, that forms temporal relational-like cubes but with aggregation and inheritance hierarchies. A query algebra is thereby defined to provide an access of objects through these associations of aggregation, inheritance and time reference. Due to the hierarchy of the data model and reducibility of the query algebra, an extensible approach to processing temporal object queries within the uniform query processing framework is attained. A set of transformation rules is identified for query rewrite, that includes the known relational and object rules plus those pertaining to the time reference. To evaluate temporal queries involved in the path, a decomposition strategy is proposed. It has been shown that temporal object queries can be processed and optimized within the uniform query processing framework.

Most OOA methods ignore the importance of system functions that are the focus of users, and require an extra effort to remove the redundant classes introduced in identifying candidate classes from the nouns and verbs of problem description. To remedy these drawbacks, we propose the FDOOA (Functional-Decomposition OOA) method. The system function model is introduced; the class model is constructed through a parallel decomposition of function and data and bottom-up composition to formulate a class hierarchy. We also design an executable specification language AOORPL and a supporting environment to construct the rapid prototype automatically so that the user can validate the specification visually. To evaluate feasibility of the FDOOA method on large-scale software systems, we use a telecommunications network management system as example to define its system specification. This system includes 44 services in total, and its system specification has 112 system functions/subfunctions and 183 classes. After this evaluation, we indeed demonstrate the advantage of facilitating the communication with the users, reducing redundant classes, decreasing the cost of modifications, and simplifying the verification of requirement specifications.

We describe the design and implementation of objectStream, a system for automatic generation of stream I/O primitives for complex C++ objects. The system consists of a parser based program generator and a generic object I/O library. The program generator pre-processes C++ class declarations to produce class-specific routines that, when executed with application programs, assists the class-neutral generic library to perform I/O operations for objects of the pre-processed classes. objectStream is novel in that it is non intrusive. It lets programmers keep the original class declarations for application development, without requiring the classes to be modified for I/O or to be derived from a persistent base class. This makes easy the task of managing application source code, and ensures compatibility of objects produced with and without the added I/O capability. The implementation of objectStream is compiler and machine independent, and its operation requires little guidance from the programmers. We describe the motivations behind objectStream, our development strategies, and several interesting implementation issues. A working example is included to illustrate the objectStream system.
