Extensive reuse of existing code components has long been recognised as a vital step if software engineering is to become a true engineering discipline. object oriented techniques offer the promise of simplifying code reuse. We consider it vital that the tools used to support the construction of software match the design methodology. We present a design for a class library management system which is able to support the object models employed by object oriented design methodologies. Relationships between classes are modelled using a number of hierarchies (or graphs) and users of the library may graphically browse these hierarchies. Users may also add their own hierarchies. The descriptions of classes are supported through the use of categories and keywords stored with each class for the specified categories. Any number of keywords may be stored with each class for each category. The design enables the simultaneous use of the library with different methodologies. The library may be queried using keywords and will return a number of classes which match the query. A user can then browse, using any of these classes as a starting point. The combination of browsing and querying provides a high degree of flexibility. Basing the descriptions of classes and the relationships between them on existing methodologies will provide a high level of conceptual concurrence between the design process and the use of supporting tools; in this instance, a class library. The paper includes a description of the a prototype implementation of the design, called Melmoth.

T++ is a C++ language extension that aids in systematic testing of C++ code. For each type t used in the code, T++ maintains the set of "typical" values of t, denoted by T(t) (typicals of t). The authors propose an object-oriented testing scheme in which each class t has a test method implemented as a static member function that runs a test script on each of the values in T(t). T++ supports this scheme by automatically generating a default T(t) based on the declaration of t and on the typicals of each of the types used in this declaration. This default can be easily tuned by the class implementor and users to reflect the particularities of the class. T++ also provides an easily tuned by the class implementor and users to reflect the particularities of the class. T++ also provides an easy-to-use mechanism for iterating over the typicals of a type. Thus, T++ gives a supporting environment for the design and implementation of test scripts with the familiar techniques of equivalence testing, boundary value analysis, or functional testing approaches. Most language extensions are realized by either a dedicated pre-processor or by a modification to the compiler. Both techniques suffer from serious drawbacks related to the complexity of C++ and the accessibility of the compiler code. In contrast, the implementation of T++ sidesteps these difficulties by relaying on a novel technique that creates a knowledge base of the source code from the debugging information.

Program dependency graphs (PDG) facilitate program analysis and related applications such as program slicing, which is a method to identify the relevant entities of the program according to data and control dependencies. In the past, PDGs and program slicing were mostly developed for (conventional) imperative programs. Recently, the object-oriented (OO) paradigm has gained momentum and popularity. The OO paradigm introduces the features of object abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism to programs, but is not considered in PDGs and program slicing. In this paper, we present an object-oriented dependency graph (ODG) to represent the structure of OO programs. The ODG is defined based on a property multi-digraph that is extended from a directed graph by augmenting multiple edge types, vertex properties and property relations. With these extensions, the ODG can avoid specious dependencies due to object encapsulation. Based on the ODG, a program slicing method for OO software is developed. Besides data and control dependencies, dependencies caused by OO features are taken into consideration in our slicing method. Through the ODG, the slicing method can be applied to facilitate the understanding, debugging and maintenance of OO software in the same way that traditional program slicing methods do.

The paper addresses the problem of structuring and managing large distributed systems constructed from many distributed objects. Specifically, the paper proposes a component model which can be used to compose objects into manageable entities. Components are specified using Darwin, an architecture description language developed by the authors. A mapping of distributed objects into Darwin components is described together with an outline of how Darwin and its associated tools are implemented in a CORBA compliant environment.

On 20 March, 1997 McDonnell Douglas Aerospace (now Boeing), and NAWC-China Lake conducted a demonstration flight as part of the Open systems Ada technology (OSAT) program, co-sponsored by the Ada Joint Program Office, the Open systems Joint Task Force, and the Joint Strike Fighter Program Office. The flight, of a specially modified AV-8B Harrier, accomplished several key objectives: first known application of the Ada95 programming language to flight software; application of the POSIX commercial standard in a real-time flight software domain; application of commercial hardware, software and development tools to avionics; demonstration and evaluation of object oriented design and mixed programming languages for real-time flight software; application and evaluation of data error detection/compensation technology developed by Wright Laboratory under the Data Fusion Integrity Process (DFIP) Program. The test aircraft was a two-seat TAV-8. The host mission computer was an improved version of the PowerPC 604 system, which was employed in MDA's Common Operational Flight Program (OFF) demonstration flights in 1996. The test profile entailed six releases of MK-76 practice bombs over China Lake's Baker Range, using different dive angles and release altitudes. Although accuracy was not an explicit test objective, all six drops were scored as hits under standard accuracy criteria. This paper summarizes selected key findings and lessons learned which resulted from this program.

Simulation of Hybrid systems in Omola/Omsim

Hybrid systems—those composed of the interaction of discrete and continuous inputs, outputs, states, and dynamic equations—are an important class of models of complex, real-world phenomena. However, the simulation tools currently available seem to be (1) ad hoc retro-fitting of existing packages, (2) hastily-built new languages, or (3) specialized software for particular subclasses (e.g., piecewise-constant dynamics). Our goal is to produce fast, high fidelity simulations of (networks of) a very broad class of hybrid systems in a user-friendly environment. In this paper, we first review expertise in the mathematical modeling of hybrid systems, viz. the hybrid dynamical systems of Branicky (HDS). Also, we discuss the object-oriented modeling and simulation of combined discrete/continuous systems using the Omola modeling language and Omsim simulation environment developed over the last eight years at Lund. Leveraging these, we are led to our main contribution: a general set of hybrid systems model classes which encompass HDS and hence several other models popularized in the literature that combine finite automata and discrete event systems with ordinary differential (ODEs) and differential algebraic equations (DAEs). These Omola model classes may be viewed as “templates” or “macros” for quick and easy entering of hybrid systems for subsequent analysis and numerically-sophisticated simulation using Omsim.

object-oriented concepts such as reuse and encapsulation offer many benefits to application development, particularly in managing complexity and change. All the benefits of OO that apply to the client can apply equally well to the server. However, until recently, these concepts have proven to benefit only the client side. Could there be any intrinsic or conceptual reason for this? Or could it be a result of timing, the availability of the tools, and the conservative restraints that result from the mission-critical nature of server computing?This panel will explore the roles of objects on the server by examining the experiences of the panelists from a technology consumer's perspective. By doing so, we would like to provide insights for corporations that are making decisions on OO technology, point out pitfalls along the way, and identify potential opportunities for technology *** panelists have developed production level object servers. The panel will answer the question of whether we are ready for object servers by discussing the following issues:• Different server types: transactional server, data server, application server, web server, etc. Are they really that much different? Most computerized data is not under the purview of traditional database management systems, but, rather, it is stored in files. Data Interchange Formats (DIFs) are the basis of an important class of such files, containing massive volumes of data, and serving a large user community. Initially designed for data exchange, DIFs are increasingly being used for data storage. Collections of DIF files have become de facto databases, and the software tools surrounding them have evolved to become ad hoc data management systems. But these systems are primitive compared with traditional database management technology. They lack flexibility, and are unlikely to scale as DIF data volumes grow. An acute need exists to provide more robust DBMS style support for data in such files, and to support interoperability in heterogeneous environments that include this data. We suggest that object oriented database techniques can be used to provide effective data management support for individual DIFs and provide a platform for interoperating with heterogeneous DIF data, both in a scalable fashion. We present architectures for implementing this support, and outline the research issues they engender. We present initial results of an experimental evaluation of one such approach.

In the realm of OO methodologies there are two major schools of thought. Both schools claim to define mechanisms whereby software applications can be created that are reusable, maintainable, and robust. Moreover, both schools claim to use abstraction as a key mechanism for achieving these benefits. At issue is whether or not these two schools are fundamentally different, or just variations on an object-oriented *** and Mellor have dubbed one of these schools "Translational". In the translational approach, two models are created. One is an abstract model of the application domain which is devoid of any design dependencies. The other model is an abstract model of the design which is devoid of any application dependencies. These two models are composed automatically to yield the code for the *** other school - supported by Booch, Rumbaugh, Jacobson, and Martin - views the architecture of a system from several different perspectives of abstraction, e.g. logical, physical. These abstractions typically form a layer; abstractions in the logical sense manifest themselves as individual classes as well as collaborations of classes. There may be one layered model, at different layers of abstraction, or, especially given the objectory view point, there may be multiple models, with an analysis model that's nearly independent from the design *** panel will explore:• Is there a seamless transition between analysis and design?• Should there be a single model or should there be two - one for the analysis and one for the design?• If there are two models, how are they "bridged"?• What, if any, are the differences in process between the two schools?• How does architecture manifest itself!• Is there, in fact, a real difference between the two schools of thought?As a result of this exploration, we hope to answer the question: Is translation a myth or is it a reality?
