Many web3d sites do not offer sufficient assistance to (especially novice) users in navigating the virtual world, find objects/places of interests, and learn how to interact withthem. this paper aims at helping the web3d content creator to face this problem by: (i) proposing the adoption of guided tours of virtual worlds as an effective user aid and (ii) describing a novel tool that provides automatic code generation for adding such guided tours to VRML worlds. Finally, we will show how the tool has been used in the development of an application concerning a 3d computer science museum.

Since its inception, VRML has held out the promise of initiating a quantum leap in webdeliverable content and applications. However, the promise has yet to be realized. In this paper, we consider the problem of the web-baseddelivery of instructions for inherently-3d construction tasks. We describe a presentation that we built using VRML anddiscuss a comparative study of the effectiveness of the presentation when viewed using both a traditional desktop environment and also a handheld PdA. the study was both quantitative and qualitative and examinedthe effect of the user interface anddelivery technology on overall task success, user interaction level, and task success for inherently 3d steps.

We introduce webCAME, a client/server multiresolution rendering system for progressive transmission and visualization of compressed non-manifold triangle meshes with texture and color. the tool is implemented as a web browser plugin built upon standard components such as Qt, OpenGL, and OdBC. By utilizing and extending recently developed multiresolution techniques, it can provide view-dependent access to huge 3ddata sets. With a size of less than 250kB it is small enough to be downloaded and installed within reasonable time. webCAME comes with a preliminary GUI for navigation and parameter selection for the multiresolution renderer. CAME stands for Compressed Adaptive Multiresolution Encoding.

the capability of (semi)automatically adapting the content, structure, and/or presentation of a web site to address the interests and preferences of each individual user is more and more considered as a key factor to increase user satisfaction and building customer loyalty. However, while a large body of literature is available about making traditional web sites adaptive, it is surprising that no research effort has been yet devoted to the problem of adapting web3d content and presentation. this paper focuses on this topic, proposing a general approach to build adaptive 3dweb sites, and illustrating a specific application of the approach to a 3d e-commerce case study. the architecture we propose, called AWE3d (Adaptive web3d), is based on a combination of readily available and platform-independent web technologies so that it can be reproduced by interested readers. Although the Virtual Reality Modeling Language has made viewing 3d content on the web possible, remotely accessing large and complex 3d worlds requires a great deal of bandwidth. In the absence of such bandwidth users will suffer substantial latency in receiving the entire scene before they are able to view and interact with it. Streaming the 3d content anddisplaying the parts currently available while allowing users to interact with and navigate through the world reduces the time users have to wait in order to become involved in the virtual scene and hence improves their experience. this paper presents the use of the MPEG-4 standard for streaming of 3d worlds andthe corresponding animation over the web while allowing users navigation and manipulation of the content, as it becomes available. Recent Standards specifications offer important but underemployed techniques to maximize access-to anddistribution-of information for real-time 3d visualization over the web. this paper describes and evaluates such techniques to transform structureddata such as Chemical Markup Language (CML) to different forms and contexts for web3ddelivery using Extensible Stylesheet Transformations (XSLT), Extensible 3d (X3d), and VRML97. Standards design approaches offer a number of advantages: data durability, data interoperability, and an ecology of tools to be deployed for production anddelivery. As we demonstrate, these techniques allow developers to port data between multiple representations and formats, to leverage the separation of the presentation (reference) from the content (referent), andthe ability to define 'high-level' markup tags for application-specific needs. By defining a set of XSL Transformations, we are able to generate multiple views and interaction schemes withthe same data set;each one personalized' for different applications anddifferent levels of expertise.

One of the major challenges in Computer Graphics concerns the 3d representation and physically-based simulation of garments. In our research, we are working closely withthe textile industry, investigating three different classes of problems. First, we aim at developing techniques and methods for cloth simulation specifically aimed at the webSd context. Second, we are defining a cross-application data exchange format among the different CAd systems and applications used in the textile industry, including the additional information needed to support 3d simulations. third, we are implementing a tool that complements traditional textile CAd systems (which are based on 2d graphics), allowing the user to automatically obtain VRML-based3d previews of the garment (for evaluating garment designs and also easily publishing them on the web). this paper illustrates the results we have achieved in these three directions.
