Microservices architecture have been widely adopted in designing distributed cloud applications where the application is decoupled into multiple small components (i.e. "microservices"). One of the challenges in deploying microservices is finding the optimal amount of resources (i.e. size) and the number of instances (i.e. replicas) for each microservice in order to maintain a good performance as well as prevent resource wastage and under-utilization which is not cost-effective. This paper presents SHOWAR, a framework that configures the resources by determining the number of replicas (horizontal scaling) and the amount of CPU and Memory for each microservice (vertical scaling). For vertical scaling, SHOWAR uses empirical variance in the historical resource usage to find the optimal size and mitigate resource wastage. For horizontal scaling, SHOWAR uses basic ideas from control theory along with kernel level performance metrics. Additionally, once the size for each microservice is found, SHOWAR bridges the gap between optimal resource allocation and scheduling by generating affinity rules (i.e. hints) for the scheduler to further improve the performance. Our experiments, using a variety of microservice applications and real-world workloads, show that, compared to the state-of-the-art autoscaling and scheduling systems, SHOWAR on average improves the resource allocation by up to 22% while improving the 99th percentile end-to-end user request latency by 20%.

We develop a framework of distributed and stateless solutions for packing and covering linear programs, which are solved by multiple agents operating in a cooperative but uncoordinated manner. Our model has a separate "agent" controlling each variable and all agent is allowed to read-off the current values only of those constraints in which it;has non-zero coefficients. This is a natural model for many distributed applications like flow control, maximum bipartite matching, and dominating sets. The most appealing feature of our algorithms is their simplicity and polylogarithmic convergence. For the packing LP max{c (.) x vertical bar Ax <= b, x >= 0}, the algorithm associates a dual variable y(i) = exp[1/epsilon(A(i)x/b(i) - 1)] for each constraint i and each agent j iteratively increases (resp. decreases) x(j) multiplicatively if A(j)(T)y is too small (resp. large) as compared to c(j). Our algorithm starting from a feasible solution, always maintains feasibility, and computes a (1 + epsilon) approximation in poly(In(mn.A(max)/epsilon) rounds. Here m and n are number of rows and columns of A and A(max);also known as the "width" of the LP, is the ratio of maximum and minimum non-zero entries A(ij)/(b(i)c(j)). Similar algorithm works for the covering LP min{b (.) y vertical bar A(T)y >= c, y >= 0} as well. While exponential dual variables are used in several packing/covering LP algorithms before [25, 9, 13, 12, 26, 16], this is the first algorithm which is both stateless and has polylogarithmic convergence. Our algorithms can be thought of as applying distributed gradient descent/ascent on a, carefully chosen potential. Our analysis differs from those of previous multiplicative update based algorithms and argues that while the current solution is far away from optimality, the potential function decreases/increases by a significant factor.

To provide Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees in open and unpredictable environments, the utilization control problem is defined to keep the processor utilization at the schedulable utilization bound, even in the face of unpredictable and/or varying task execution times. To handle the end-to-end task model where each task is comprised of a chain of subtasks distributed on multiprocessors, researchers have used Model Predictive control (MPC) to address the Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) control problem. Although MPC can handle a limited range of model uncertainties due to execution time estimation errors, the system may suffer performance deterioration or even become unstable if the actual task execution times are much larger than their estimated values. In this paper, we present an online adaptive optimal control approach using Recursive Least Squares (RLS) based model estimator plus Linear Quadratic (LQ) optimal controller. We use simulation experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of our controller compared with the MPC-based controller. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Many irregular scientific computing problems can be modeled by directed acyclic task graphs (DAGs). In this paper, we present an efficient run-time system for executing general asynchronous DAG schedules on distributed memory machines. Our solution tightly integrates the run-time scheme with a fast communication mechanism to eliminate unnecessary overhead in message buffering and copying, and takes advantage of task dependence properties to ensure the correctness of execution. We demonstrate the applications of this scheme in sparse LU and Cholesky factorizations for which actual speedups have been hard to obtain in the literature because parallelism in these problems is irregular and limited. Our experiments on Meiko CS-2 show the promising results of our approach in exploiting irregular task parallelism with mixed granularities.
