Statistical modeling of natural image sequences is of fundamental importance to both the understanding of biological visual systems and the development of Bayesian approaches for solving a wide variety of machine vision and image processing problems. Previous methods are based on measuring spatiotemporal power spectra and by optimizing the best linear filters to achieve independent or sparse representations of the time-varying image signals. Here we propose a different approach, in which we investigate the temporal variations of local phase structures in the complex wavelet transform domain. We observe that natural image sequences exhibit strong prior of temporal motion smoothness, by which local phases of wavelet coefficients can be well predicted from their temporal neighbors. We study how such a statistical regularity is interfered with "unnatural" image distortions and demonstrate the potentials of using temporal motion smoothness measures for reduced-reference video quality assessment. © 2009 spie-IS&t.

In this paper, we develop rectangular Gaussian kernels, i.e. all the rotated versions of the first order partial derivatives of the 2D nonsymmetrical Gaussian functions, which are used to convolve with the test images for edge extraction. By using rectangular kernels, one can have greater flexibility to smooth high frequency noise while keeping the high frequency edge details. When using larger kernels for edge detection, one can smooth more high frequency noise at the expense of edge details. Rectangular kernels allow us to smooth more noise along one direction and detect better edge details along the other direction, which improve the overall edge detection results especially when detecting line pattern edges. Here we propose two new approaches in using rectangular Gaussian kernels, namely the pattern-matching method and the quadratic method. the magnitude and directional edge from these two methods are computed based on the convolution results of the small neighborhood of the edge point with the rectangular Gaussian kernels along different directions. © 2009 spie.

Digital holography is the process where an object's phase and amplitude information is retrieved from intensity images obtained using a digital camera (e.g. CCD or CMOS sensor). In-line digital holographic techniques offer full use of the recording device's sampling bandwidth, unlike off-axis holography where object information is not modulated onto carrier fringes. Reconstructed images are obscured by the linear superposition of the unwanted, out of focus, twin images. In addition to this, speckle noise degrades overall quality of the reconstructed images. the speckle effect is a phenomenon of laser sources used in digital holographic systems. Minimizing the effects due to speckle noise, removal of the twin image and using the full sampling bandwidth of the capture device aids overall reconstructed image quality. Such improvements applied to digital holography can benefit applications such as holographic microscopy where the reconstructed images are obscured with twin image information. Overcoming such problems allows greater flexibility in current image processing techniques, which can be applied to segmenting biological cells (e.g. MCF-7 and MDA-MB- 231) to determine their overall cell density and viability. this could potentially be used to distinguish between apoptotic and necrotic cells in large scale mammalian cell processes, currently the system of choice, within the biopharmaceutical industry. © 2009 spie.

the tactile-optical probe (so-called fiber probe) is a well-known probe in micro-coordinate metrology. It consists of an optical fiber with a probing element at its end. this probing element is adjusted in the imaging plane of the optical system of an optical coordinate measuring machine (CMM). It can be illuminated through the fiber by a LED. the position of the probe is directly detected by image processing algorithms available in every modern optical CMM and not by deflections at the fixation of the probing shaft. therefore, the probing shaft can be very thin and flexible. this facilitates the measurement with very small probing forces and the realization of very small probing elements (diameter: down to 10 μm). A limitation of this method is that at present the probe does not have full 3D measurement capability. At the Physikalisch-technische Bundesanstalt (PtB), several arrangements and measurement principles for a full 3D tactile-optical probe have been implemented and tested successfully in cooperation with Werth-Messtechnik, Gießen, Germany. this contribution provides an overview of the results of these activities. © 2009 spie-IS&t.

Accurate length measurement of multiple cotton fibers

We present the design and realization of an imaging system intended for use as a reference method for the accurate measurement of cotton fiber length. the prototype system is composed of an off-the-shelf scanner that generates a grayscale image of multiple individualized fibers, followed by customized image processing algorithms that compute the length of each fiber in the image. Although the system requires some degree of separation between the individual fibers at scan time, it is shown to produce highly accurate length measurements that are invariant to fiber orientation, shape, interfiber intersections, and intrafiber crimps and crossovers. Hence, in its present state, the proposed system serves as an excellent reference method for assessing the efficacy of commercially available length measurement systems. (C) 2008 spie and IS&t. Due to the affection of large moving object in the video image, the ordinary image stabilization algorithms can't get precise motion vector of the image. In this paper, a new image stabilization method that explicitly deals with video images containing large moving object is given out. It detects a rough area containing moving object first. then this area will be got rid of from source image. Finally, a feature area taken from the rest part is used to calculate the image motion. For the affection of moving object has been eliminated, motion vector's precision of the image is improved greatly.
