What visually distinguishes a painting from a photograph is often the absence of texture and the sharp edges: in many paintings, edges are sharper than in photographic images while textured areas contain less detail. Such artistic effects can be achieved by filters that smooth textured areas while preserving, or enhancing, edges and corners. However, not all edge preserving smoothers are suitable for artistic imaging. this study presents a generalization of the well know Kuwahara filter aimed at obtaining an artistic effect. theoretical limitations of the Kuwahara filter are discussed and solved by the new nonlinear operator proposed here. Experimental results show that the proposed operator produces painting-like output images and is robust to corruption of the input image such as blurring. Comparison with existing techniques shows situations where traditional edge preserving smoothers that are commonly used for artistic imaging fail while our approach produces good results.

Composite images are synthesized from existing photographs by artists who make concept art, e.g. storyboards for movies or architectural planning. Current techniques allow an artist to fabricate such an image by digitally splicing parts of stock photographs. While these images serve mainly to "quickly" convey how a scene should look, their production is laborious. We propose a technique that allows a person to design a new photograph with substantially less effort. this paper presents a method that generates a composite image when a user types in nouns, such as "boat" and "sand." the artist can optionally design an intended image by specifying other constraints. Our algorithm formulates the constraints as queries to search an automatically annotated image database. the desired photograph, not a collage, is then synthesized using graph-cut optimization, optionally allowing for further user interaction to edit or choose among alternative generated photos. Our results demonstrate our contributions of (1) a method of creating specific images with minimal human effort, and (2) a combined algorithm for automatically building an image library with semantic annotations from any photo collection.

Spatiotemporal Gaussian mixture model to detect moving objects in dynamic scenes

the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is an important metric for moving objects segmentation and is fit to deal with the gradual changes of illumination and the repetitive motions of scene elements. However, the performance of the GMM may be plagued by the complex motion of the dynamic background such as waving trees and flags fluttering. A spatiotemporal Gaussian mixture model (StGMM) is proposed to handle the complex motion of the background by considering every background pixel to be fluctuating both in intensity and in its neighboring region. A new matching rule is defined to incorporate the spatial information. Experimental results on typical scenes show that StGMM can segment the moving objects correctly in complex scenes. Quantitative evaluations demonstrate that the proposed StGMM performs better than GMM. (C) 2007 spie and IS&t.

With the development of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology, automatic target recognition (AtR) is becoming increasingly important. In this paper, we proposed a 3-class target classification system in SAR images. the system is based on invariant wavelet moments and support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. It is a two-stage approach. the first stage is to extract and select a small set of wavelet invariant moment features to indicate target images. the wavelet invariant moments take both advantages of the wavelet inherent property of multi-resolution analysis and moment invariants quality of invariant to translation, scaling changes and rotation. the second stage is classification of targets with SVM algorithm. SVM is based on the principle of structural risk minimization (SRM), which has been shown better than the principle of empirical risk minimization (ERM) which is used by many conventional networks. to test the performance and efficiency of the proposed method, we performed experiments on invariant wavelet moments, different kernel functions, 2-class identification, and 3-class identification. test results show that wavelet invariant moments indicate the target effectively;linear kernel function achieves better results than other kernel functions, and SVM classification approach performs better than conventional nearest distance approach. © 2007 spie-IS&t.

Low-light-level video cameras have benefited from rapid advances in digital technology during the past two decades. In legacy cameras, the video signal was processed using analog electronics which made real-time, nonlinear processing of the video signal very difficult. In state-of-the-art cameras, the analog signal is digitized directly from the sensor and processed entirely in the digital domain, enabling the application of advanced processing techniques to the video signal in real time. In fact, all aspects of modem low-light television cameras are controlled via digital technology, resulting in various enhancements that surpass analog electronics. In addition to video processing, large-scale digital integration in these low-light level cameras enables precise control of the image intensifier and image sensor, facilitating large inter-scene dynamic range capability, extended intra-scene dynamic range and blooming control. Digital video processing and digital camera control are used to provide improved system-level performance, including nearly perfect pixel response uniformity, correction of blemishes, and electronic boresight. Compact digital electronics also enable comprehensive camera built-in-test (BIt) capability which provides coverage for the entire camera-from photons into the sensor to the processed video signal going out the connector. Individuals involved in the procurement of present and future low-light-level cameras need to understand these advanced camera capabilities in order to write accurate specifications for their advanced video system requirements. this paper provides an overview of these modem video system capabilities along with example specification text.
