Gaze estimation is an important component of computer vision systems that monitor human activity for surveillance, human-computer interaction, and various other applications including iris recognition. Gaze estimation methods are particularly valuable when they are non-intrusive, do not require calibration, and generalize well across users. this paper presents a novel eye model that is employed for efficiently performing uncalibrated eye gaze estimation. the proposed eye model was constructed from a geometric simplification of the eye and anthropometric data about eye feature sizes in order to circumvent the requirement of calibration procedures for each individual user. the positions of the two eye comers and the midpupil, the distance between the two eye comers, and the radius of the eye sphere are required for gaze angle calculation. the locations of the eye comers and midpupil are estimated via processing following eye detection, and the remaining parameters are obtained from anthropometric data. this eye model is easily extended to estimating eye gaze under variable head pose. the eye model was tested on still images of subjects at frontal pose (0 degrees) and side pose (34 degrees). An upper bound of the model's performance was obtained by manually selecting the eye feature locations. the resulting average absolute error was 2.98 degrees for frontal pose and 2.87 degrees for side pose. the error was consistent across subjects, which indicates that good generalization was obtained. this level of performance compares well with other gaze estimation systems that utilize a calibration procedure to measure eye features.

terraSAR-X is Germany's new radar remote sensing flagship. It carries an advanced high-resolution X-band SAR instrument. the key element of the system is the active phased array antenna nominally operated with a bandwidth of 100 MHz or 150 MHz and an experimental 300 MHz capability. the instrument's flexibility with respect to electronic beam steering and pulse-to-pulse polarization switching allows the acquisition of SAR data in Stripmap, Spotlight and ScanSAR imaging configurations in different polarization modes for a wide range of incidence angles. the mission is implemented in the framework of a public-private partnership between the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and EADS Astrium GmbH Germany and will provide high resolution SAR data products for commercial use and scientific exploitation. processing of the pay load data will be performed at DLR's Payload Ground Segment (PGS) for terraSAR-X. the central part of PGS is the terraSAR Multi-Mode SAR Processor (tMSP) focusing the SAR data in a unified way for the different imaging configurations. A wide range of processing options spanning from phase preserving complex products in slant range geometry to orthorectified terrain corrected intensity images lead to a comprehensive collection of SAR product types and variants. During the 5 months lasting commissioning phase the complete processing chain will be properly tuned and adjusted. the tMSP algorithms have to be configured, e.g. thresholds for calibration pulse analysis, estimation window sizes for SAR data analysis, parameterization of estimation algorithms. Also the configuration of product variants with respect to resolution and radiometric quality will be checked and refined. this paper shortly reviews the different imaging configurations and product variants and gives a report on the SAR processor checkout activities and presents the first results.

this paper presents an efficient technique for linking edge points in order to generate a closed-contour representation. It is based on the consecutive use of global and local schemes. In both cases it is assumed that the original intensity image, as well as its corresponding edge map, are given as inputs to the algorithm. the global scheme computes an initial representation by connecting edge points minimizing a global measure based on spatial information (3D space). It relies on the use of graph theory and exploits the edge points' distribution through the given edge map, as well as their corresponding intensity values. At the same time spurious edge points are removed by a morphological filter the local scheme finally generates closed contours, linking open boundaries, by using a local cost function that takes into account both spatial and topological information. Experimental results with different images, together with comparisons with a previous technique, are presented. (C) 2007 spie and IS&t.

image segmentation and its performance evaluation are very difficult but important problems in computer vision. A major challenge in segmentation evaluation comes from the fundamental conflict between generality and objectivity: For general-purpose segmentation, the ground truth and segmentation accuracy may not be well defined, while embedding the evaluation in a specific application, the evaluation results may not be extensible to other applications. We present a new benchmark to evaluate five different image segmentation methods according to their capability to separate a perceptually salient structure from the background with a relatively small number of segments. this way, we not only find a large variety of images that satisfy the requirement of good generality, but also construct ground-truth segmentations to achieve good objectivity. We also present a special strategy to address two important issues underlying this benchmark: (1) most image-segmentation methods are not developed to directly extract a single salient structure;(2) many real images have multiple salient structures. We apply this benchmark to evaluate and compare the performance of several state-of-the-art image segmentation methods, including the normalized-cut method, the watershed method, the efficient graph-based method, the mean-shift method, and the ratio-cut method. When mixed mail enters a postal facility, it must first be faced and oriented so that the address is readable by automated mail processing machinery. Existing US Postal Service (USPS) automated systems face and orient domestic mail by searching for fluorescing stamps on each mail piece. However, misplaced or partially fluorescing postage causes a significant fraction of mail to be rejected. Previously, rejected mail had to be faced and oriented by hand, thus increasing mail processing cost and time. Our earlier work successfully demonstrated the utility of machine-vision-based extraction of postal delimiters-such as cancellation marks and barcodes-for camera-based mail facing and orientation. Arguably, of all the localized information sources on the envelope image, the destination address block is the richest in content and the most structured in its form and layout. this paper focuses exclusively on the destination address block image and describes new vision-based features that can be extracted and used for mail orientation. Our results on real USPS datasets indicate robust performance. the algorithms described herein will be deployed nationwide on USPS hardware in the near future.

Unsupervised texture segmentation using a nonlinear energy optimization method

A nonlinear functional is considered for segmentation of images containing structural textures. A structural texture pattern in an image is characterized by a certain amplitude spectrum, and segmentation of different patterns is obtained by detecting different regions with different amplitude spectra. A gradient-descent-based algorithm is proposed by deriving equations minimizing the functional. this algorithm, implementing the solutions minimizing the functional, is based on the level set method. An effective method employed in this algorithm is shown to be robust in a noisy environment. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms segmentation obtained by using the simulated annealing algorithm based on Gaussian Markov random fields. (c) 2006 spie and IS&t.

Efficient communication requires an appropriate choice and combination of media. the print media has succeeded to attract audiences also in our electronic age because of its high usability. However, the limitations of print are self evident. By finding ways of combining printed and electronic information into so called hybrid media, the strengths of both media can be obtained. In hybrid media, paper functions as an interface to the web, integrating printed products into the connected digital world. this is a "reinvention" of printed matter making it into a more communicative technology. Hybrid media means that printed products can be updated in real time. Multimedia clips, personalization and e-shopping can be added as a part of the interactive medium. the concept of enhancing print with interactive features has been around for years. However, the technology has been so far too restricting - people don't want to be tied in front of their PC's reading newspapers. Our solution is communicative and totally mobile. A code on paper or electronic media constitutes the link to mobility.
