Efficient communication requires an appropriate choice and combination of media. the print media has succeeded to attract audiences also in our electronic age because of its high usability. However, the limitations of print are self evident. By finding ways of combining printed and electronic information into so called hybrid media, the strengths of both media can be obtained. In hybrid media, paper functions as an interface to the web, integrating printed products into the connected digital world. this is a "reinvention" of printed matter making it into a more communicative technology. Hybrid media means that printed products can be updated in real time. Multimedia clips, personalization and e-shopping can be added as a part of the interactive medium. the concept of enhancing print with interactive features has been around for years. However, the technology has been so far too restricting - people don't wantto be tied in front of their PC's reading newspapers. Our solution is communicative and totally mobile. A code on paper or electronic media constitutes the link to mobility.

In this paper, we show how Markovian strategies used to solve well-known segmentation problems such as motion estimation, motion detection, motion segmentation, stereovision, and color segmentation can be significantly accelerated when implemented on programmable graphics hardware. More precisely, we expose how the parallel abilities of a standard graphics processing unit usually devoted to image synthesis can be used to infer the labels of a segmentation map. the problems we address are stated in the sense of the maximum a posteriori with an energy-based or probabilistic formulation, depending on the application. In every case, the label field is inferred with an optimization algorithm such as iterated conditional mode (ICM) or simulated annealing. In the case of probabilistic segmentation, mixture parameters are estimated with the K-means and the iterative conditional estimation (ICE) procedure. For both the optimization and the parameter estimation algorithms, the graphics processor unit's (GPU's) fragment processor is used to update in parallel every labels of the segmentation map, while rendering passes and graphics textures are used to simulate optimization iterations. the hardware results obtained with a mid-end graphics card, show thatthese Markovian applications can be accelerated by a factor of 4 to 200 without requiring any advanced skills in hardware programming. We present a classification work performed on industrial parts using artificial vision, a support vector machine (SVM), boosting, and a combination of classifiers. the objectto be controlled is a coated heater used in television sets. Our project consists of detecting anomalies under manufacturer production, as well as in classifying the anomalies among 20 listed categories. Manufacturer specifications require a minimum of ten inspections per second without a decrease in the quality of the produced parts. this problem is addressed by using a classification system relying on real-time machine vision. to fulfill both real-time and quality constraints, three classification algorithms and a tree-based classification method are compared. the first one, hyperrectangle based, proves to be well adapted for real-time constraints. the second one is based on the Adaboost algorithm, and the third one, based on SVM, has a better power of generalization. Finally, a decision tree allowing improving classification performances is presented. (c) 2006 spie and IS&t.

Digital optical microscopy, coupled with parallel processing and a large arsenal of labeling techniques, offers tremendous values to localize, identify, and characterize cells and molecules. this generates many image informatics challenges in requiring new algorithms and tools to extract, classify, correlate, and model image features and content from massive amounts of cellular and molecular images acquired. image informatics aims to fill this gap. Coupling automated microscopy and image analysis with biostatistical and data mining techniques to provide a system biologic approach in studying the cells, the basic unit of life, potentially leads to many exciting applications in life and health sciences. In this paper we propose a Bayesian framework for unsupervised image fusion and joint segmentation, More specifically we consider the case where we have observed images of the same objectthrough differentimaging processes or through different spectral bands (multi- or hyperspectral images). the objective of this work is then to propose a coherent approach to combine these images and obtain a joint segmentation which can be considered as the fusion result of these observations. the proposed approach is based on a hidden Markov modeling of the images where the hidden variables representthe common classification or segmentation labels. these label variables are modeled by the Potts Markov random field. We propose two particular models for the pixels in each segment (iid. or Markovian) and develop appropriate Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms for their implementations. Finally we present some simulation results to show the relative performances of these models and mention the potential applications of the proposed methods in medical imaging and survey and security imagingsystems. We propose the Bayesian image reconstruction with prior edges ( BIRPE) algorithm for reconstructing an image from Fourier-domain samples with prior edge information from a higher resolution image. A major difference between BIRPE and previous methods is that all edges are detected automatically, and no segmentation of the prior image is required. Also, an edge found in the prior image does not need to be confirmed by the observations;smoothing is reduced across the edge if either the prior image or the observations suggest an edge. Simulations and results on magnetic resonance spectroscopic data are presented that demonstrate the effectiveness of the BIRPE method. (c) 2005 spie and IS&t.
