Region-based seam optimization for image stitching

Parallax disposition is a challenging task in image stitching. thus far, the most effective method for parallax processing is the seam-driven method. However, its ability to handle complex textures is poor. to apply the seam-driven method to more scenes, we have incorporated the idea of spatially varying warps. Before finding the optimal seam, we try to register the overlapping area in as projective a manner as possible. Meanwhile, we set some constraints for the registered image to preserve the original appearance as much as possible. Among the constraints, we introduce local features to further improve the stitched image. After registration, we use the maximum flow method to obtain the optimal seam and introduce a series of seam evaluation systems. On one hand, these systems evaluate whether the resulting seam is misaligned, and on the other hand, they provide feedback to the previous registration, increasing the weights of the feature points near the dislocation point to fine-tune the seam. Comparisons with existing image stitching algorithms demonstrate the effectiveness and universality Of Our approach. (C) 2019 spie and IS&t

image gradient, as a preprocessing step is an essential tool in image processing in many research areas such as edge detection, segmentation, smoothing, inpainting, etc. In the present paper, we develop a new gradient by integrated the quaternion framework with LPA-ICI (local polynomial approximation - the intersection of confidence intervals) based on anisotropic gradient concepts for the color image processing applications. Computer simulations on the Berkeley Segmentation Dataset show that the new quaternion anisotropic gradient exhibits fewer color artifacts compared to state-of-the-art techniques including well-knowledge gradient operators. © 2019, Society for imaging Science and technology.

this paper presents a new combined local and global transform domain-based feedback image enhancement algorithm for medical diagnosis, treatment, and clinical research. the basic idea in using local alfa-rooting method is to apply it to different disjoint blocks with different sizes. the block size and alfa-rooting parameters driven through optimization using the Agaian's cost function (image enhancement non-reference quality measure). the presented new approach allows enhancing MRI and Ct images with uneven lighting and brightness gradient by preserving the local image features/details. Extensive computer simulations (CS) on real medical images are offered to gage the presented method. CS shows that our method improves the contrast and enhances the details of the medical images effectively compared with the current state-of-art methods. © 2019, Society for imaging Science and technology.

Primary brain tumors can be malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous). Out of primary brain tumors, gliomas are the most common and, high grade gliomas carry a poor prognosis. In our paper, we present a technique to segment the glioma cells in Magnetic Resonance imaging (MRI) using faster Region based Convolutional Neural Network (R-CNN) and edge detection techniques in image processing algorithms. this study identifies the region of interest that is glioma cells, with higher confidence level and localize the tumor on the MRI with the tumor mask. Further, analysis shows that with the proposed technique it is possible to achieve an average detection accuracy, sensitivity, Dice score and confidence level of 99.81%, 87.72%, 91.14% and 93.6% respectively. © 2019 University of Kelaniya.

Adaptive Optics (AO) is of growing importance for understanding the impact of retinal and systemic diseases on the retina. While AO retinal imaging in healthy eyes is now routine, AO imaging in older eyes and eyes with optical changes to the anterior eye can be difficult and requires a control and an imaging system that is resilient when there is scattering and occlusion from the cornea and lens, as well as in the presence of irregular and small pupils. Our AO retinal imaging system combines evaluation of local image quality of the pupil, with spatially programmable detection. the wavefront control system uses a woofer tweeter approach, combining an electromagnetic mirror and a MEMS mirror and a single Shack Hartmann sensor. the SH sensor samples an 8 mm exit pupil and the subject is aligned to a region within this larger system pupil using a chin and forehead rest. A spot quality metric is calculated in real time for each lenslet. Individual lenslets that do not meet the quality metric are eliminated from the processing. Mirror shapes are smoothed outside the region of wavefront control when pupils are small. the system allows imaging even with smaller irregular pupils, however because the depth of field increases under these conditions, sectioning performance decreases. A retinal conjugate micro-mirror array selectively directs mid-range scatter to additional detectors. this improves detection of retinal capillaries even when the confocal image has poorer image quality that includes both photoreceptors and blood vessels.

this work aims to develop a nondestructive technique based on Near Infrared (NIR) imaging for the evaluation of transparent and semi-transparent composite materials, such as Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) and laminated glass aircraft components. the NIR technique offers enhanced optical imaging of damage which cannot be detected with conventional optical inspection. the NIR imaging can be performed in reflection or transition mode (i.e. radiation reflected from or transmitted through an object under inspection). While the NIR transmission mode is better for detecting deeper defects, it has a serious limitation for field application in real aircraft parts, since it requires simultaneous access (e.g. illumination source, cabling, etc.) of both sides of the structure. For these reasons, an innovative NIR approach, the NIR Double-transmission Mode (NIR-DtM), has been developed. the new approach is based on the advantages of both aforementioned techniques while eliminating their deficiencies. In order to optimize the use of NIR imaging for field applications, different parameters that affect the operation of the technique were considered. these parameters include the surface geometry, the distance from the material under investigation, the inspection angle, as well as the type and intensity of excitation source. Finally, image processing and analysis tools were used to improve the inspection sensitivity and further decrease the inspection time.

We present a new image enhancement algorithm based on combined local and global image processing. the basic idea is to apply α-rooting image enhancement approach for different image blocks. For this purpose, we split image in moving windows on disjoint blocks with different size (8 by 8, 16 by 16, 32 by 32 and, i.e.). the parameter alfa for every block driven through optimization of measure of enhancement (EME). the resulting image is a weighted mean of all processing blocks. this strategy for image enhancement allows getting more contrast image with the following properties: irregular lighting and brightness gradient. Some experimental results are presented to illustrate the performance of the proposed algorithm. © 2018 Society for imaging Science and technology.

Laser Optoacoustic Ultrasonic imaging System Assembly (LOUISA-3D) was developed in response to demand of diagnostic radiologists for an advanced screening system for the breast to improve on low sensitivity of x-ray based modalities of mammography and tomosynthesis in the dense and heterogeneous breast and low specificity magnetic resonance imaging. It is our working hypothesis that co-registration of quantitatively accurate functional images of the breast vasculature and microvasculature, and anatomical images of breast morphological structures will provide a clinically viable solution for the breast cancer care. Functional imaging is LOUISA-3D is enabled by the full view 3D optoacoustic images acquired at two rapidly toggling laser wavelengths in the near-infrared spectral range. 3D images of the breast anatomical background is enabled in LOUISA-3D by a sequence of B-mode ultrasound slices acquired with a transducer array rotating around the breast. this creates the possibility to visualize distributions of the total hemoglobin and blood oxygen saturation within specific morphological structures such as tumor angiogenesis microvasculature and larger vasculature in proximity of the tumor. the system has four major components: (i) a pulsed dual wavelength laser with fiberoptic light delivery system, (ii) an imaging module with two arc shaped probes (optoacoustic and ultrasonic) placed in a transparent bowl that rotates around the breast, (iii) a multichannel electronic system with analog preamplifiers and digital data acquisition boards, and (iv) computer for the system control, data processing and image reconstruction. the most important advancement of this latest system design compared with previously reported systems is the full breast illumination accomplished for each rotational step of the optoacoustic transducer array using fiberoptic illuminator rotating around the breast independently from rotation of the detector probe.
