A new hardware implementation of histogram equalization by means of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is presented Histogram equalization is an effective means of image enhancement. Its Real-time processing requires a great deal of memory and very high processing speed. the logic cell nature of XC4000 family's FPGA is most suitable fbr performing real-time pixel-level image processing operations such as histogram equalization A core is constructed to complete the histogram statistics and histogram equalization As a result the chip makes circuits and system more effective than ever;and it takes very short time to complete the calculation and generate the look-up table (LUt). the equalizing technique is described and implementation results using a Xilinx XC4010 FPGA are presented.

Block-matching algorithm based on dynamic adjustment of search window for low bit-rate video coding

A dynamic search window adjustment for block-matching algorithm (BMA) based on the block similarity is presented to reduce the computational complexity of full search BMA. the adjustment of the size of the search window is performed in three steps: (1) set a new search origin based on the block similarity and the displaced block difference (DBD), (2) adjust the size of search window in inverse proportion to block similarity, and (3) update the thresholds for accommodation to a given image sequence. the technique can be easily applied to full search BMA and several fast search algorithms to get more efficiency and to reduce a possibility of falling into a local minimum. Experimental results show that the proposed technique has a good MSE performance and reduces the number of search points substantially. (C) 1998 spie and IS&t. [S1017-9909(98)02303-4].

Contrast enhancement and image segmentation using a class of morphological nonincreasing filters

In this paper, contrast enhancement and image segmentation are investigated using a class of morphological nonincreasing filters that can be considered toggle mappings. these nonincreasing filters are built using the traditional morphological gradients. these filters have interesting properties and give essential contrast to the images. We apply them sequentially between two or more given parameters in order to obtain intermediate results. this approach improves the control of the filtering process and provides other tools for contrasting images. We presented several new properties and one study of the invariant set of these filters. Using these new propositions, we show that it is possible to obtain better results in image segmentation when we apply the watershed transformation. Also, we propose an algorithm for segmenting images using this class of nonincreasing filters. the method is applied in a geodesic way using two different criteria for segmenting an image. We relate our results with a recent method in mathematical morphology called the flat zone approach and we compare our approach with another method in image processing, the so-called quadtree approach. Coherently three-dimensional wavelet-based approach to volumetric image compression

Compression of three-dimensional (3D) or four-dimensional medical image data has now become imperative for clinical picture archiving and communication systems (PACS), telemedicine, and telepresence networks. While lossless compression is often desired, lossy compression techniques are gaining acceptance for medical applications, provided that clinically important information can be preserved in the coding process. We present a coherently three-dimensional method for volumetric image compression using 3D wavelet transform and 3D zerotree coding. First the volumetric image data is decomposed using 3D separable wavelet filterbanks. In this study, we adopt a three-level decomposition to form a 22-band multiresolution pyramid of an octree. then, to exploit the dependencies among the subband coefficients resulting from 3D wavelet decomposition, a 3D zerotree coding scheme is utilized. to take advantage of the near-Laplacian distributions of the subband coefficients and the efficiency of zerotree coding, a pseudouniform quantization is adopted. the proposed volumetric image compression scheme is applied to two sets of real Ct medical data. Significant coding gains have been achieved which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed volumetric image compression scheme for medical as well as other applications. (C) 1998 spie and IS&t. Robust object tracking in compressed image sequences

Accurate object tracking is important in defense applications where an interceptor missile must hone into a target and track it through the pursuit until the strike occurs. the expense associated with an interceptor missile can be reduced through a distributed processing arrangement where the computing platform on which the tracking algorithm is run resides on the ground, and the interceptor need only carry the sensor and communications equipment as part of its electronics complement. In this arrangement, the sensor images are compressed, transmitted to the ground, and decompressed to facilitate real-time downloading of the data over available bandlimited channels. the tracking algorithm is run on a groundbased computer while tracking results are transmitted back to the interceptor as soon as they become available. Compression and transmission in this scenario introduce distortion. If severe, these distortions can lead to erroneous tracking results. As a consequence, tracking algorithms employed for this purpose must be robust to compression distortions in this paper we introduced a robust object tracking algorithm based on the continuous wavelet transform. the algorithm processes image sequence data on a frame-by-frame basis, implicitly faking advantage of temporal history and spatial frame filtering to reduce the impact of compression artifacts. test results show that tracking performance can be maintained at low transmission bit rates and can be used reliably in conjunction with many well-known image compression algorithms. A hybrid GA/SA (genetic algorithm/simulated annealing) approach is proposed for the blind deconvolution problem of image restoration. the blind deconvolution problem is modeled as an optimization problem whose cost function is to be minimized by the proposed hybrid approach. the approach combines the advantage of GA for global searches and the advantage of SA for local ones. the results indicate that it is possible to arrive at high quality solutions in reasonable time even for large-scale problems, such as image processing.

A central step in content-based video retrieval is the temporal segmentation of video. An application independent approach to video segmentation is to detect temporally contiguous segments without significant content change between successive frames. Each such segment is termed a shot. A high-performance shot boundary detection-based video segmentation algorithm is proposed. the technique uses unsupervised clustering on a multiple feature input space, followed by a heuristic elimination process to detect, with almost perfect accuracy, shot boundaries in the video. With an extremely high accuracy coupled with a very small number of false positives, this algorithm outperforms most of the existing techniques.

this paper presents a novel 3-D image coding scheme based on the ''Ray Space'' representation of 3-D spatial information. First, we give the definition of the Ray Space and show that the Ray Space representation can be a common data format for the integrated 3-D visual communication. then, we introduce the vector field in the Ray Space and propose a novel compression scheme in which the Ray Space data is compressed into the vector data on the divergent points. Finally, experimental results of the reconstruction of Ray Space data is presented.

this paper describes a novel neural network (NN) based system for defecting rigid objects from their (2-D) gray-level image images. In this approach a labeled graph is employed to construct a template model for an object from the image region where the object is located A novel network of NN (NoNN) is proposed to learn the examples of object model graph templates. the NoNN is composed of a set of subnetworks that are not connected to one another the selected network topology improves the generalization of the classifier in terms of its Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension (VCdim). Each subnetwork is a network of multilayer perception neural network classifiers operating in parallel with the rest of the system. Each subnetwork is assigned to learn the label of one vertex of a graph, the detection scheme combines the decisions of the subnetworks to classify an image graph extracted from an input image block. this visual computational model is potentially useful for partial matching where the object is occluded. Performance of the system is tested in modeling and detection of human eye regions in face images with some degree of variation in the direction of pose;(C) 1997 spie and IS&t.

Conventional electronic document filing systems are inconvenient because the user must specify the keywords in each document for later searches. to solve this problem, automatic keyword extraction methods using natural language processing and character recognition have been developed.(1_3) However, these methods are slow, especially for Japanese documents. to develop a practical electronic document filing system, we focused on the extraction of keyword areas from a document by image processing. Our fast title extraction method can automatically extract titles as keywords from business documents. All character strings are evaluated for similarity by rating points associated with title similarity. We classified these points as four items: character string size, position of character strings, relative position among character strings, and string attribution (an underlined or a circumscribed borderline). Finally, the character string that has the highest rating is selected as the title area. the character recognition process is carried out on the selected area. It is fast because this process must recognize a small umber of patterns in the restricted are only, and not throughout the entire document. the mean performance of this method is an accuracy of about 91% and 1.8 sec. processing time for an examination of 100 Japanese business documents.
