Signal processing concepts are used to study the problems of obtaining continuous image representations in terms of B-spline basis functions, and performing reconstructions at various magnifications. Filters that compute direct or indirect B-spline transformations are derived and characterized in terms of their z-transforms for polynomial splines of any order. Efficient recursive implementations of these operators are proposed. Recursive filters that efficiently solve the problem of approximating a signal through the use of least squares splines are also derived. this last procedure is analogous to the application of an anti-aliasing filter prior to decimation for the representation of a signal with fewer samples.

this paper describes a 3D-image processing approach to generate a combination display of intracranial vessels and adjacent brain tissue surfaces in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). the algorithm is based on the ray-tracing principle and may be regarded as a union of the techniques of surface integration and maximum intensity projection (MIP). Measurement methods and preprocessing steps for acquisition of a flow-compensated vessel dataset and a t₁-weighted tissue volume with isolated brain with equal partitioning are described. the method is intended as a tool for the optimization of neurosurgical planning.

We previously developed an image reconstruction display for reconstructing images compressed by our hybrid compression algorithm. the hybrid algorithm, which improves image quality, applies Discrete Cosine transform coding (DCt) and Block truncation Coding (BtC) adaptively to an image, according to its local properties. this reconstruction display receives the compressed data from the host computer through a BMC channel and quickly reconstructs good quality images using a pipeline-based microprocessor. this paper describes a prototype of a system for compression and reconstruction of medical images. It also describes the architecture of the image compression processor, one of the components of the system. this system consists of the image compression processor, a host main-frame computer and reconstruction displays. Under this system, distributed processing in the image compression processor and the image reconstruction displays reduces the load on the host computer, and supplies an environment where the control routines for PACS and the hospital information system (HIS) can co-operate. the compression processor consists of a maximum of four parallel compression units with communication ports. In this architecture, the hybrid algorithm, which includes serial operations, can be processed at high speed by communicating the internal data. In experiments, the compression system proved effective: the compression processor compressed a 1k x 1k image in about 2 seconds using four compression units. the three reconstruction displays showed the image at almost the same time. Display took less than 7 seconds for the compressed image, compared with 28 seconds for the original image.

Seven months experiences of a filmless PACS (named HU-PACS) which covers Radiology, Orthopedic, Internal medicine and General Surgery departments are reported. the PACS has only 20 image terminals but handles more than 50% of images produced which is about 1000 images per working day. Physicians of the departments have many criticisms and opinions on the PACS but generally speaking it is well accepted and inspiring the physicians to improve the PACS in its image quality and other functions instead of being discarded. Preliminary clinical assessment are performed and reported also.

the digital processing of electron microscopic images from serial sections containing laser-induced topographical references allows a 3-D reconstruction at a depth resolution of 30 to 40 nm of entire cells by the use of image analysis methods, as already demonstrated for transmission Electron Microscopy (tEM) coupled with a video camera. We decided to use a Scanning transmission Electron Microscope (StEM) to get higher contrast and better resolution at medium magnification. the scanning of our specimens at video frequencies is an attractive and easy way to link a StEM with an image processing system but the hysteresis of the electronic spools responsible for the magnetic deviation of the scanning electron beam induces deformations of images which have to be modelized and corrected before registration. Computer algorithms developed for image analysis and treatment correct the artifacts caused by the use of StEM and by serial sectioning to automatically reconstruct the third dimension of the cells. they permit the normalization of the images through logarithmic processing of the original grey level infonnation. the automatic extraction of cell limits allows to link the image analysis and treatments with image synthesis methods by minimal human intervention. the surface representation and the registered images provide an ultrastructural data base from which quantitative 3-D morphological parameters, as well as otherwise impossible visualizations, can be computed. this 3-D image processing named C.A.V.U.M. for Computer Aided Volumic Ultra-Microscopy offers a new tool for the documentation and analysis of cell ultrastructure and for 3-D morphometric studies at EM magnifications. Further, a virtual observer can be computed in such a way as to simulate a visit of the reconstructed object.

We conceived a hybrid PACS which combines analogue and digital elements where it is required. We experimented a clinical application of the dynamic image utilizing the analogue element which is a feature of the hybrid PACS. With the analogue optical disk, dynamic image acquisition of 30 frames per second is possible and image recording is also possible with any modality of X-ray fluoroscopy function. In addition, X-ray dose to the patient is one-fifth to one-tenth compared with the conventional cine filming method while its still image is clear and a data acquisition to the PACS is easy. We applied this system to the areas of the otorhinolaryngology, orthopaedics and respiratory disease and could perform a various analysis of the disease status under natural conditions, also we found that this system is useful for judging an effect of a treatment as well as jugding a functional recovery after an operation and an effect of a rehabilitation. We are also planning to extend the application to the areas of the digestive system and the group examination from now on.

Color 35mm photographic slides are commonly used in dermatology for education, and patient records. An electronic storage and retrieval system for digitized slide images may offer some advantages such as preservation and random access. We have integrated a system based on a personal computer (PC) for digital imaging of 35mm slides that depict dermatologic conditions. Such systems require significant resources to accommodate the large image files involved. Methods to reduce storage requirements and access time through image compression are therefore of interest. this paper contains an evaluation of one such compression method that uses the Hadamard transform implemented on a PC-resident graphics processor. image quality is assessed by determining the effect of compression on the performance of an image feature recognition task.

A major factor in determining the overall utility of a medical picture Archiving and Communications (PACS) system is the functionality of the diagnostic workstation. Meyer-Ebrecht and Wendler have proposed a modular picture computer architecture with high throughput a Perry et. al have defined performance requirements for radiology workstations. In order to be clinically useful, a primary diagnosis workstation must not only provide functions of current viewing systems (e.g. mechanical alternators such as acceptable image quality, simulatneous viewing of multiple images, and rapid switching of image banks;but must also provide a diagnostic advantage over the current systems. this includes window-level functions on any image, simultaneous display of multi-modality images, rapid image manipulation, image processing, dynamic image display (cine), electronic image archival, hardcopy generation, image acquisition, network support, and an easy user interface. Implementation of such a workstation requires an underlying hardware architecture which provides high speed image transfer channels, local storage facilities, and image processing functions. this paper describes the hardware architecture of the Siemens Diagnostic Reporting Console (DRC) which meets these requirements.

the large size and multiple bands of todays satellite data require increasingly powerful tools in order to display and interpret the acquired imagery in a timely fashion. Pixar has developed two major tools for use in this data interpretation. these tools are the electronic Light table (ELt), and an extensive image processing package, ChapiP. these tools operate on images limited only by disk volume size, currently 3 Gbytes. the electronic Light table package provides a fully windowed interface to these large 12 bit monochrome and multiband images, passing images through a software defined image interpretation pipeline in real time during an interactive roam. A virtual image software framework allows interactive modification of the visible image. the roam software pipeline consists of a seventh order polynomial warp, bicubic resampling, a user registration affine, histogram drop sampling, a 5x5 unsharp mask, and per window contrast controls. It is important to note that these functions are done in software, and various performance tradeoffs can be made for different applications within a family of hardware configurations. Special high spped zoom, rotate, sharpness, and contrast operators provide interactive region of interest manipulation. Double window operators provide for flicker, fade, shade, and difference of two parent windows in a chained fashion. Overlay graphics capability is provided in a PostScfipt* windowed environment (NeWS**). the image is stored on disk as a multi resolution image pyramid. this allows resampling and other image operations independent of the zoom level. A set of tools layered upon ChapIP allow manipulation of the entire pyramid file. Arbitrary combinations of bands can be computed for arbitrary sized images, as well as other image processing operations. ChapIP can also be used in conjunction with ELt to dynamically operate on the current roaming window to append the image processing function onto the roam pipeline.

A new type of endoscope is being developed which utilizes an optical raster scanning system for imaging through an endoscope. the optical raster scanner utilizes a high speed, multifaceted, rotating polygon mirror system for horizontal deflection, and a slower speed galvanometer driven mirror as the vertical deflection system. When used in combination, the optical raster scanner traces out a raster similar to an electron beam raster used in television systems. this flying spot of light can then be detected by various types of photosensitive detectors to generate a video image of the surface or scene being illuminated by the scanning beam. the optical raster scanner has been coupled to an endoscope. the raster is projected down the endoscope, thereby illuminating the object to be imaged at the distal end of the endoscope. Elemental photodetectors are placed at the distal or proximal end of the endoscope to detect the reflected illumination from the flying spot of light. this time sequenced signal is captured by an image processor for display and processing. this technique offers the possibility for very small diameter endoscopes since illumination channel requirements are eliminated. Using various lasers, very specific spectral selectivity can be achieved to optimum contrast of specific lesions of interest. Using several laser lines, or a white light source, with detectors of specific spectral response, multiple spectrally selected images can be acquired simultaneously. the potential for co-linear therapy delivery while imaging is also possible. © 1990 spie.
