Flexible and efficient mobile optical mark recognition

image processing methods that take place in different areas of life from identification to traffic flow control are starting to be used on mobile devices. Hence, usage of optical mark recognition systems (OMRS) on mobile devices is also not widespread as it is for image processing applications. A mobile OMRS is developed using image processing methods. In this developed system, image enhancement, edge detection, and tilt-shifting operations were performed on the optical answer paper images that are obtained using mobile devices. Within the scope of this study, it is aimed to achieve the maximum success of image processing operations on a mobile device that has limited hardware resources. the evaluation of optical answer papers that are obtained using mobile devices is performed using the image processing methods and algorithms developed within the scope of this study. the developed system is tested using different type of optical answer papers. According to the test results, the developed system provides a flexible and efficient use and partly eliminates previous work constraints. the success rate of the developed system is determined to be 93.54% using the test results obtained. Salt-and-pepper noise removal using modified mean filter and total variation minimization

the search for effective noise removal algorithms is still a real challenge in the field of image processing. An efficient image denoising method is proposed for images that are corrupted by salt-and-pepper noise. Salt-and-pepper noise takes either the minimum or maximum intensity, so the proposed method restores the image by processing the pixels whose values are either 0 or 255 (assuming an 8-bit/pixel image). For low levels of noise corruption (less than or equal to 50% noise density), the method employs the modified mean filter (MMF), while for heavy noise corruption, noisy pixels values are replaced by the weighted average of the MMF and the total variation of corrupted pixels, which is minimized using convex optimization. two fuzzy systems are used to determine the weights for taking average. to evaluate the performance of the algorithm, several test images with different noise levels are restored, and the results are quantitatively measured by peak signal-to-noise ratio and mean absolute error. the results show that the proposed scheme gives considerable noise suppression up to a noise density of 90%, while almost completely maintaining edges and fine details of the original image. this paper presents an approach enabling localization and identification of foreign bodies in polymer materials applying a combined approach of x-ray imaging, imaging microscopy, optical coherence tomography and Raman imaging spectroscopy. the reliable detection of even small foreign bodies in polymer materials and parts designated for use in semiconductor manufacturing and processing machines is essential. Foreign bodies can in particular be metals, burnt particles of the polymer of the work piece, or intact or degenerated foreign polymers. In either case, all surfaces of e.g. a handling equipment that get in contact with the semiconductor material or process solutions have to be free of foreign bodies to ensure the integrity of the manufacturing process. Size, localization and material of the foreign body are main parameters that decide if a work piece has to be rejected. Current inspection systems may enable the localization of the foreign body, but are not capable of identifying the material and structure of the foreign body;many components with inclusions are therefore rejected as a precaution. this work aims towards the development of a combined sensor approach as part of an automatic quality assurance procedure which can be integrated in the fabrication process. X-ray imaging is used to identify metal foreign bodies. imaging microscopy is used to detect foreign bodies on the surface of the polymer parts. Optical coherence tomography is used to measure the three-dimensional position and size of the foreign bodies. Raman imaging spectroscopy is used to identify the composition of the foreign bodies if they are located on the surface.

Evaluation of image quality is important for many image processing systems, such as those used for acquisition, compression, restoration, enhancement, or reproduction. Its measurement is often accompanied by user studies, in which a group of observers rank or rate results of several algorithms. Such user studies, known as subjective image quality assessment experiments, can be very time consuming and do not guarantee conclusive results. this paper is intended to help design an efficient and rigorous quality assessment experiment. We propose a method of limiting the number of scenes that need to be tested, which can significantly reduce the experimental effort and still capture relevant scene-dependent effects. to achieve it, we employ a clustering technique and evaluate it on the basis of compactness and separation criteria. the correlation between the results obtained from a set of images in an initial database and the results received from reduced experiment are analyzed. Finally, we propose a procedure for reducing the initial scenes number. Four different assessment techniques were tested: single stimulus, double stimulus, forced choice, and similarity judgments. We conclude that in most cases, 9 to 12 judgments per evaluated algorithm for a large scene collection is sufficient to reduce the initial set of images. (C) 2015 spie and IS&t

Starting in 2001, we proposed and extensively demonstrated (using a DMD: Digital Micromirror Device) an agile pixel Spatial Light Modulator (SLM)-based optical imager based on single pixel photo-detection (also called a single pixel camera) that is suited for operations with both coherent and incoherent light across broad spectral bands. this imager design operates with the agile pixels programmed in a limited SNR operations starring time-multiplexed mode where acquisition of image irradiance (i.e., intensity) data is done one agile pixel at a time across the SLM plane where the incident image radiation is present. Motivated by modern day advances in RF wireless, optical wired communications and electronic signal processing technologies and using our prior-art SLM-based optical imager design, described using a surprisingly simple approach is a new imager design called Coded Access Optical Sensor (CAOS) that has the ability to alleviate some of the key prior imager fundamental limitations. the agile pixel in the CAOS imager can operate in different time-frequency coding modes like Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA), Code-Division Multiple Access (CDMA), and time Division Multiple Access (tDMA). Data from a first CAOS camera demonstration is described along with novel designs of CAOS-based optical instruments for various applications.

the CLARItY method renders brains optically transparent to enable high-resolution imaging in the structurally intact brain. Anatomically annotating CLARItY brains is necessary for discovering which regions contain signals of interest. Manually annotating whole-brain, terabyte CLARItY images is difficult, time-consuming, subjective, and error-prone. Automatically registering CLARItY images to a pre-annotated brain atlas offers a solution, but is difficult for several reasons. Removal of the brain from the skull and subsequent storage and processing cause variable non-rigid deformations, thus compounding inter-subject anatomical variability. Additionally, the signal in CLARItY images arises from various biochemical contrast agents which only sparsely label brain structures. this sparse labeling challenges the most commonly used registration algorithms that need to match image histogram statistics to the more densely labeled histological brain atlases. the standard method is a multiscale Mutual Information B-spline algorithm that dynamically generates an average template as an intermediate registration target. We determined that this method performs poorly when registering CLARItY brains to the Allen Institute's Mouse Reference Atlas (ARA), because the image histogram statistics are poorly matched. therefore, we developed a method (Mask-LDDMM) for registering CLARItY images, that automatically finds the brain boundary and learns the optimal deformation between the brain and atlas masks. Using Mask-LDDMM without an average template provided better results than the standard approach when registering CLARItY brains to the ARA. the LDDMM pipelines developed here provide a fast automated way to anatomically annotate CLARItY images;our code is available as open source software at ht-tp : HNeuroData. io.

image sensors with integrated, programmable signal processing execute computationally intensive processing steps during or immediately after image acquisition, thereby allowing for reducing output data to relevant features only. In contrast to conventional image processing systems, the tasks of image acquisition and actual image processing in such a "vision chip" cannot be viewed independently of each other. Both for validating the architecture and supporting programming in the course of application development, modeling on the system level has been performed as part of the design process of the vision-system-on-chip. Apart from the implementation of all essential components of the integrated control unit as well as digital and analog signal processing, special attention has been paid to the integration into the development environment. Being able to purposefully insert parameter deviations and/or defects at different points of the analog processing enables investigations with respect to their influence on image processing algorithms performed on the image sensor. the electronic rolling shutter mechanism found in many digital cameras may result in spatially-varying blur kernels if camera motion occurs during an imaging exposure. However, existing deblurring algorithms cannot remove the blurs in this case since the blurred image doesn't typically meet the assumptions embedded in these algorithms. this paper attempts to address the problem of modeling and correcting nonuniform image blurs caused by the rolling shutter effect. We introduce a new operator and a mask matrix into the projective motion blur model to describe the blurring process of each row in the image. Based on this modified geometric model, an objective function is formulated and optimized in an alternating scheme. In addition, noisy accelerometer data along x and y directions is incorporated as a regularization term to constrain the solution. the effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by experimental results on synthetic and real images.
