the electronic rolling shutter mechanism found in many digital cameras may result in spatially-varying blur kernels if camera motion occurs during an imaging exposure. However, existing deblurring algorithms cannot remove the blurs in this case since the blurred image doesn't typically meet the assumptions embedded in these algorithms. this paper attempts to address the problem of modeling and correcting nonuniform image blurs caused by the rolling shutter effect. We introduce a new operator and a mask matrix into the projective motion blur model to describe the blurring process of each row in the image. Based on this modified geometric model, an objective function is formulated and optimized in an alternating scheme. In addition, noisy accelerometer data along x and y directions is incorporated as a regularization term to constrain the solution. the effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated by experimental results on synthetic and real images.

Atmospheric turbulence can significantly affect imaging through paths near the ground. Atmospheric turbulence is generally treated as a time varying inhomogeneity of the refractive index of the air, which disrupts the propagation of optical signals from the object to the viewer. Under circumstances of deep or strong turbulence, the object is hard to recognize through direct imaging. Conventional imaging methods can't handle those problems efficiently. the required time for lucky imaging can be increased significantly and the image processing approaches require much more complex and iterative de-blurring algorithms. We propose an alternative approach using a plenoptic sensor to resample and analyze the image distortions. the plenoptic sensor uses a shared objective lens and a microlens array to form a mini Keplerian telescope array. therefore, the image obtained by a conventional method will be separated into an array of images that contain multiple copies of the object's image and less correlated turbulence disturbances. then a high-dimensional lucky imaging algorithm can be performed based on the collected video on the plenoptic sensor. the corresponding algorithm will select the most stable pixels from various image cells and reconstruct the object's image as if there is only weak turbulence effect. then, by comparing the reconstructed image with the recorded images in each MLA cell, the difference can be regarded as the turbulence effects. As a result, the retrieval of the object's image and extraction of turbulence effect can be performed simultaneously.

We review our technique for tomographic phase microscopy with optical tweezers [1]. this tomographic phase microscopy approach enables full 3-D refractive-index reconstruction. tomographic phase microscopy measures quantitatively the 3-D distribution of refractive-index in biological cells. We integrated our external interferometric module with holographic optical tweezers for obtaining quantitative phase maps of biological samples from a wide range of angles. the close-to-common-path, off-axis interferometric system enables a full-rotation tomographic acquisition of a single cell using holographic optical tweezers for trapping and manipulating with a desired array of traps, while acquiring phase information of a single cell from all different angles and maintaining the native surrounding medium. We experimentally demonstrated two reconstruction algorithms: the filtered back-projection method and the Fourier diffraction method for 3-D refractive index imaging of yeast cells.

Real-time planar segmentation of depth images: From three-dimensional edges to segmented planes

Real-time execution of processing algorithms for handling depth images in a three-dimensional (3-D) data framework is a major challenge. More specifically, considering depth images as point clouds and performing planar segmentation requires heavy computation, because available planar segmentation algorithms are mostly based on surface normals and/or curvatures, and, consequently, do not provide real-time performance. Aiming at the reconstruction of indoor environments, the spaces mainly consist of planar surfaces, so that a possible 3-D application would strongly benefit from a real-time algorithm. We introduce a real-time planar segmentation method for depth images avoiding any surface normal calculation. First, we detect 3-D edges in a depth image and generate line segments between the identified edges. Second, we fuse all the points on each pair of intersecting line segments into a plane candidate. third and finally, we implement a validation phase to select planes from the candidates. Furthermore, various enhancements are applied to improve the segmentation quality. the GPU implementation of the proposed algorithm segments depth images into planes at the rate of 58 fps. Our pipeline-interleaving technique increases this rate up to 100 fps. With this throughput rate improvement, the application benefit of our algorithm may be further exploited in terms of quality and enhancing the localization. © 2015 spie and IS&t.

the slant removal is a necessary preprocessing task in many document image processing systems. In this paper, we describe a technique for removing the slant from the entire page, avoiding the segmentation procedure. the presented technique could be combined with the most existed slant removal algorithms. Experimental results are presented on two databases.

Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) is a recent microscopy technique that enables one to go beyond the diffraction limit using patterned illumination. the high frequency information is encoded through aliasing into the observed image. By acquiring multiple images with different illumination patterns aliased components can be separated and a high-resolution image reconstructed. Here we investigate image processing methods that perform the task of high-resolution image reconstruction, namely square-law detection, scaled subtraction, super-resolution SIM (SR-SIM), and Bayesian estimation. the optical sectioning and lateral resolution improvement abilities of these algorithms were tested under various noise level conditions on simulated data and on fluorescence microscopy images of a pollen grain test sample and of a cultured cell stained for the actin cytoskeleton. In order to compare the performance of the algorithms, the following objective criteria were evaluated: Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), Signal to Background Ratio (SBR), circular average of the power spectral density and the S-3 sharpness index. the results show that SR-SIM and Bayesian estimation combine illumination patterned images more effectively and provide better lateral resolution in exchange for more complex image processing. SR-SIM requires one to precisely shift the separated spectral components to their proper positions in reciprocal space. High noise levels in the raw data can cause inaccuracies in the shifts of the spectral components which degrade the super-resolved image. Bayesian estimation has proven to be more robust to changes in noise level and illumination pattern frequency.

In Ct imaging, a variety of applications exist where reconstructions are SNR and/or resolution limited. However, if the measured data provide redundant information, composite image data with high SNR can be computed. Generally, these composite image volumes will compromise spectral information and/or spatial resolution and/or temporal resolution. this brings us to the idea of transferring the high SNR of the composite image data to low SNR (but high resolution) 'source' image data. It was shown that the SNR of Ct image data can be improved using iterative reconstruction [1]. We present a novel iterative reconstruction method enabling optimal dose usage of redundant Ct measurements of the same body region. the generalized update equation is formulated in image space without further referring to raw data after initial reconstruction of source and composite image data. the update equation consists of a linear combination of the previous update, a correction term constrained by the source data, and a regularization prior initialized by the composite data. the efficiency of the method is demonstrated for different applications: (i) Spectral imaging we have analysed material decomposition data from dual energy data of our photon counting prototype scanner: the material images can be significantly improved transferring the good noise statistics of the 20 keV threshold image data to each of the material images. (ii) Multi-phase liver imaging: Reconstructions of multi-phase liver data can be optimized by utilizing the noise statistics of combined data from all measured phases (iii) Helical reconstruction with optimized temporal resolution: splitting up reconstruction of redundant helical acquisition data into a short scan reconstruction with tam window optimizes the temporal resolution the reconstruction of full helical data is then used to optimize the SNR. (iv) Cardiac imaging: the optimal phase image (best phase') can be improved by transferring all applied over radiation
