Integrity tests are proposed for image processing algorithms that should yield essentially the same output under 90 degree rotations, edge-padding and monotonic gray-scale transformations of scanned documents. the tests are demonstrated on built-in functions of the Matlab image processing toolbox. Only the routine that reports the area of the convex hull of foreground components fails the rotation test. Ensuring error-free preprocessing operations like size and skew normalization that are based on resampling an image requires more radical treatment. Even if faultlessly implemented, resampling is generally irreversible and may introduce artifacts. Fortunately, advances in storage and processor technology have all but eliminated any advantage of preprocessing or compressing document images by resampling them. Using floating point coordinate transformations instead of resampling images yields accurate run-length, moment, slope, and other geometric features.

the field of algorithmically assessing the 3D quality of experience and/or 3D quality is an extremely challenging one;making it a fertile ground for research. the complexity of the problem, coupled with our yet nascent understanding of 3D perception and the increasing commercial shift toward 3D entertainment makes the area of 3D QA interesting, formidable and practically relevant. this article undertakes a brief review of the recent research in the area of 3D visual quality of experience and quality assessment. We first review literature in the field of quality of experience which encompasses geometry, visual discomfort etc., and then perform a similar review in the field of quality assessment which encompasses distortions such as blur, noise, compression etc. We describe algorithms and databases that have been proposed in the literature for these purposes. We conclude with a short description of a recent resource - the LivE 3D IQA database that is the first quality assessment database which provides researchers with access to true depth information for each of the stereo pairs obtained from a high-precision range scanner.

Expanding image by an arbitrary scale factor and thereby creating an enlarged image is a crucial image processing operation. De-interlacing is an example of such operation where a video field is enlarged in vertical direction with 1 to 2 scale factor. the most advanced de-interlacing algorithms use a few consequent input fields to generate one output frame. In order to save hardware resources in video processors, missing lines in each field may be generated without reference to the other fields. Line doubling, known as "bobbing", is the simplest intra field de-interlacing method. However, it may generate visual artifacts. For example, interpolation of an inserted line from a few neighboring lines by vertical filter may produce such visual artifacts as "jaggies". In this work we present edge adaptive image up-scaling and/or enhancement algorithm, which can produce "jaggies" free video output frames. As a first step, an edge and its parameters in each interpolated pixel are detected from gradient squared tensor based on local signal variances. then, according to the edge parameters including orientation, anisotropy and variance strength, the algorithm determines footprint and frequency response of two-dimensional interpolation filter for the output pixel. Filter's coefficients are defined by edge parameters, so that quality of the output frame is controlled by local content. the proposed method may be used for image enlargement or enhancement (for example, anti-aliasing without resampling). It has been hardware implemented in video display processor for intra field de-interlacing of video images.

touch sensing is ubiquitous in many consumer electronic products. Users are expecting to be able to touch with their finger the surface of a display and interact with it. Yet, the actual mechanics and physics of the touch process are little known, as these are dependent on many independent variables. Ranging from the physics of the fingertip structure, composed of ridges, valleys, and pores, and beyond a few layers of skin and flesh the bone itself. Moreover, sweat glands and wetting are critical as well as we will see. As for the mechanics, the pressure at which one touches the screen, and the manner by which the surfaces responds to this pressure, have major impact on the touch sensing. In addition, different touch sensing methods, like capacitive or optical, will have different dependencies. For example, the color of the finger might impact the latter, whereas the former is insensitive to it. In this paper we describe a system that captures multiple modalities of the touch event, and by post-processing synchronizing all these. this enables us to look for correlation between various effects, and uncover their influence on the performance of the touch sensing algorithms. Moreover, investigating these relations allows us to improve various sensing algorithms, as well as find areas where they complement each other. We conclude by pointing to possible future extensions and applications of this system.

the ability of an image region to hide or mask a target signal continues to play a key role in the design of numerous image-processing and vision applications. However, one of the challenges in designing an effective model of masking for natural images is the lack of ground-truth data. to address this issue, this paper describes a psychophysical study designed to obtain local contrast detection thresholds (masking maps) for a database of natural images. Via a three-alternative forced-choice experiment, we measured the thresholds for detecting 3.7 cycles/deg vertically oriented log-Gabor targets placed within each 85x85-pixel patch (1.9 deg patch) of 15 natural images from the CSIQ image database [Larson and Chandler, JEI, 2010]. thus, for each image, we obtained a masking map in which each entry in the map denotes the RMS contrast threshold for detecting the log-Gabor target at the corresponding spatial location in the image. Here, we describe the psychophysical procedures used to collect the thresholds, we provide analyses of the results, and we provide some outcomes of predicting the thresholds via basic low-level features, a computational masking model, and two modern image-quality assessment algorithms.

Data extraction from engraved text is discussed rarely, and nothing in the open literature discusses data extraction from cemetery headstones. Headstone images present unique challenges such as engraved or embossed characters (causing inner-character shadows), low contrast with the background, and significant noise due to inconsistent stone texture and weathering. Current systems for extracting text from outdoor environments (billboards, signs, etc.) make assumptions (i.e. clean and/or consistently-textured background and text) that fail when applied to the domain of engraved text. the ability to extract the data found on headstones is of great historical value. this paper describes a novel and efficient feature-based text zoning and segmentation method for the extraction of noisy text from a highly textured engraved medium. this paper also demonstrates the usefulness of constraining a problem to a specific domain. the transcriptions of images zoned and segmented through the proposed system have a precision of 55% compared to 1% precision without zoning, a 62% recall compared to 39%, and an error rate of 78% compared to 8303%.
