In this paper we propose a novel feature based on SIFt (Scale Invariant Feature transform) algorithm(1) for the robust representation of local visual contents. SIFt features have raised much interest for their power of description of visual content characterizing punctual information against variation of luminance and change of viewpoint and they are very useful to capture local information. For a single image hundreds of keypoints are found and they are particularly suitable for tasks dealing with image registration or image matching. In this work we stretched the spatial coverage of descriptors creating a novel feature as composition of keypoints present in an image region while maintaining the invariance properties of SIFt descriptors. the number of descriptors is reduced, limiting the computational weight, and at the same time a more abstract descriptor is achieved. the new feature is therefore suitable at describing objects and characteristic image regions. We tested the retrieval performance with a dataset used to test PCA SIFt2 and image matching capability among images processed with affine transformations. Experimental results are reported.

Perceptual image distortion measures can play a fundamental role in evaluating and optimizing imaging systems and image processing algorithms. Many existing measures are formulated to represent "just noticeable differences" (JNDs), as measured in psychophysical experiments on human subjects. But some image distortions, such as those arising from small changes in the intensity of the ambient illumination, are far more tolerable to human observers than those that disrupt the spatial structure of intensities and colors. Here, we introduce a framework in which we quantify these perceptual distortions in terms of "just intolerable differences" (JIDs). As in (Wang & Simoncelli, Proc. ICIP 2005), we first construct a set of spatio-chromatic basis functions to approximate (as a first-order taylor series) a set of "non-structural" distortions that result from changes in lighting/imaging/viewing conditions. these basis functions are defined on local image patches, and are adaptive, in that they are computed as functions of the undistorted reference image. this set is then augmented with a complete basis arising from a linear approximation of the CIELAB color space. Each basis function is weighted by a scale factor to convert it into units corresponding to JIDs. Each patch of the error image is represented using this weighted overcomplete basis, and the overall distortion metric is computed by summing the squared coefficients over all such (overlapping) patches. We implement an example of this metric, incorporating invariance to small changes in the viewing and lighting conditions, and demonstrate that the resulting distortion values are more consistent with human perception than those produced by CIELAB or S-CIELAB.

We tend to think of digital imaging and the tools of Photoshop (tM) as a new phenomenon in imaging. We are also familiar with multiple-exposure HDR techniques intended to capture a wider range of scene information, than conventional film photography. We know about tone-scale adjustments to make better pictures. We tend to think of everyday, consumer, silver-halide photography as a fixed window of scene capture with a limited, standard range of response. this description of photography is certainly true, between 1950 and 2000, for instant films and negatives processed at the drugstore. these systems had fixed dynamic range and fixed tone-scale response to light. All pixels in the film have the same response to light, so the same light exposure from different pixels was rendered as the same film density. Ansel Adams, along with Fred Archer, formulated the Zone System, staring in 1940. It was earlier than the trillions of consumer photos in the second half of the 20th century, yet it was much more sophisticated than today's digital techniques. this talk will describe the chemical mechanisms of the zone system in the parlance of digital image processing. It will describe the Zone System's chemical techniques for image synthesis. It also discusses dodging and burning techniques to fit the HDR scene into the LDR print. Although current HDR imaging shares some of the Zone System's achievements, it usually does not achieve all of them.

A common problem for all color displays, regardless of whether they are of the self-luminous or non-self-luminous type, is the synthesis of a full-color image from a limited set of primary colors. Several approaches to color synthesis have been employed for electronic displays. the most successful of these conform to the principles of additive color mixture and include optical superposition, spatial synthesis and temporal synthesis. In order to understand the principles of color generation in electronic display systems, as well as the relative strengths and weaknesses of synthesizing color in the space and time domains, I first consider the visual bases which allow such color synthesis to occur. Although basic approaches to color synthesis have served the evolution of display technology well up to recent times, I present the argument that the continued evolution of display technology toward higher display resolution and enhanced color quality has exposed the limitations of both spatial color synthesis and temporal color synthesis and raises questions as to whether either method for synthesizing color can alone fully satisfy the ever increasing demands on display image quality. Clearly, new approaches to color synthesis are needed to sustain the evolution of display technology, and I describe recent concepts with the potential for pushing the horizons of color display image quality and reducing the costs of future color displays. these include hybrid spatial-temporal color synthesis and 3D color synthesis as well as variants of these approaches.

Among many molecular imaging modalities, bioluminescence tomography (BLt) stands out as an effective approach for in vivo imaging because of its noninvasive molecular and cellular level detection ability, high sensitivity and low cost in comparison with other imaging technologies. However, there exists the case that large scale problem with large number of points and elements in the structure of mesh standing for the small animal or phantom. And the large scale problem's system matrix generated by the diffuse approximation (DA) model using finite element method (FEM) is large. So there wouldn't be enough random access memory (RAM) for the program and the related inverse problem couldn't be solved. Considering the sparse property of the BLt system matrix, we've developed a new sparse matrix (ZSM) to overcome the problem. And the related algorithms have all been speeded up by multi-thread technologies. then the inverse problem is solved by tikhonov regularization method in adaptive finite element (AFE) framework. Finally, the performance of this method is tested on a heterogeneous phantom and the boundary data is obtained through Monte Carlo simulation. During the process of solving the forward model, the ZSM can save more processing time and memory space than the usual way, such as those not using sparse matrix and those using triples or Cross Linked sparse matrix. Numerical experiments have shown when more CPU cores are used, the processing speed is increased. By incorporating ZSM, BLt can be applied to large scale problems with large system matrix. © 2010 Copyright spie - the International Society for Optical Engineering.

Microgrid polarimeters are a type of division of focal plane (DoFP) imaging polarimeter that contains a mosaic of pixel-wise micropolarizing elements superimposed upon an FPA sensor. Such a device measures a slightly different polarized state at each pixel. these measurements are combined to estimate the Stokes vector at each pixel in the image. DoFP devices have the advantage that they can obtain Stokes vector image estimates for an entire scene from a single frame capture. However, they suffer from the disadvantage that the neighboring measurements that are used to estimate the Stokes vector images are acquired at differing instantaneous fields of view (IFOV). this IFOV issue leads to false polarization signatures that significantly degrade the Stokes vector images. Interpolation and other image processing strategies can be employed to reduce IFOV artifacts;however these techniques have a limit to the amount of enhancement they can provide on a single microgrid image. Here we investigate algorithms that use multiple microgrid images that contain frame-to-frame global motion to further enhance the Stokes vector image estimates. Motion-based imagery provides additional redundancy that can be exploited to recover information that is "missing" from a single microgrid frame capture. We have found that IFOV and aliasing artifacts can be defeated entirely when these types of algorithms are applied to the data prior to Stokes vector estimation. We demonstrate results on real LWIR microgrid data using a particular resolution enhancement technique from the literature.

Statistical modeling of natural image sequences is of fundamental importance to both the understanding of biological visual systems and the development of Bayesian approaches for solving a wide variety of machine vision and image processing problems. Previous methods are based on measuring spatiotemporal power spectra and by optimizing the best linear filters to achieve independent or sparse representations of the time-varying image signals. Here we propose a different approach, in which we investigate the temporal variations of local phase structures in the complex wavelet transform domain. We observe that natural image sequences exhibit strong prior of temporal motion smoothness, by which local phases of wavelet coefficients can be well predicted from their temporal neighbors. We study how such a statistical regularity is interfered with "unnatural" image distortions and demonstrate the potentials of using temporal motion smoothness measures for reduced-reference video quality assessment. © 2009 spie-IS&t.
