This paper describes a vision chip architecture for high-speed vision systems that we propose. The chip has general-purpose processing elements (PEs) in massively parallel architecture, with each PE directly connected to photo-detectors. Control programs allow various visual processing applications and algorithms to be implemented. A sampling rate of 1 ms is enough to realize high-speed visual feedback for robot control. To integrate as many PEs as possible on a single chip a compact design is required, so we aim to create a very simple architecture. The sample design has been implemented into an FPGA chip; a full custom chip has also been designed and has been submitted for fabrication.

ITL and Tempura are used for respectively the formal specification and simulation of a large scale system, namely the general purpose multi threaded dataflow processor EP/3. The paper shows that this processor can be specified concisely within ITL and simulated with Tempura. But it also discusses some problems encountered during the specification and simulation, and indicates what should be added to solve those problems.

The adoption of Internet related technologies throughout industrial communication systems enables Web based solutions for their management. This requires effective methods for modeling and description of the managed systems and components. The Extensible Markup Language XML provides a promising solution for a general purpose description. Based on exemplary solutions for different fieldbusses, the paper shows concepts, description methods, software tools, and migration paths in XML based frameworks. These frameworks use a hierarchically organized structure of linked XML description files. Appropriate solutions using style sheets and scripts are explained. Special attention is paid to description approaches suitable for an integration of heterogeneous systems into a unique management framework.

During the compiling process, certain name resolutions must be made to ascertain whether a particular name has been used previously. If it has been used previously, the attributes this particular name possesses must be noted for use during the execution process. If the name has not been used previously, we assign default attributes. In some block structured languages, such as the procedural languages PL/I and ALGOL, a declaration of a name is made and there is a certain well-defined region of the program over which the declaration is applicable.! This region is called the scope of the name established by the declaration. In general, distinct declarations of the same identifier imply distinct names with non-overlapping scopes. In some internal blocks, names are used without being explicitly declared. As a result, situations arise in which a resolution is required to establish the scope of a particular name. The resolution of a name can occur at compile time or at execution time and these are the static and dynamic cases respectively. In the static case during compilation of a higher level source, the scope of the name must be resolved, using some algorithm which ascertains whether the name is used in another block. This naming problem is one which must be resolved quite frequently during tfie compiling pro-cesses^ and it appears very attractive, therefore, to develop an architecture which can reduce the speed required to effect this resolution. It is the purpose of this work to suggest such an architecture. We propose, herein, how a microprogrammed architecture can be applied to the problem described above, that is, the naming problem for static identification. We will show the advantages which accrue from such an architecture. A microprogramming simulator is described, which permits the encoding and de-bugging of the micro-code used to effect the name resolution. A high speed target tracking system using a two-dimensional vision sensor with cell-parallel processing capabilities is described. A general purpose processing element connected to each sensing element processes various vision tasks in data parallel at a speed far beyond the video rate. The sensor architecture is simple and scalable, and assumes that this vision should be implemented into a VLSI chip. The cycle time of parallel processing vision is 670 /spl mu/s in the case of their experimental target tracking system. By using the fast position signals, the system has attained target tracking at the actuator speed limit.

Synonyms extraction is a difficult task to achieve and evaluate. Some studies have tried to exploit general dictionaries for that purpose, seeing them as graphs where words are related by the definition they appear in, in a complex network of an arguably semantic nature. The advantage of using a general dictionary lies in the coverage, and the availability of such resources, in general and also in specialised domains. We present here a method exploiting such a graph structure to compute a distance between words. This distance is used to isolate candidate synonyms for a given word. We present an evaluation of the relevance of the candidates on a sample of the lexicon.

VisPro is a general-purpose visual language generation system based on Reserved Graph Grammar (RGG). It can express a wide range of diagrammatic visual programming languages (VPLs). This paper presents a global layout approach used in the VisPro system. Our approach is grammar-based graph drawing, in which layout rules are embedded in the productions of RGG. Thus, the RGG formalism serves both the visual language grammar and the layout grammar. This approach is appropriate and feasible enough for graph drawing in the area of visual programming languages based on reserved graph grammars.

A quantitative method for designing application specific integrated (sub)systems is presented. The method uses a general-purpose silicon assembler-ALMA (Approche d'un Langage de Micro-Architecture). We illustrate this approach by the example of a dictionary machine that consists of n processing elements working in parallel. An analysis of the effect of several generic parameters on the performance and the size of the silicon parts exemplifies the quantitative approach to cost/performance tradeoffs that is offered by ALMA.< >

Benchmarking is the de facto standard for evaluating hardware architectures in academia and industry. While several benchmark suites targeting different application domains have been developed for CPU processors over many decades, benchmarking GPU architectures is not as mature. Since the introduction of gpus for general-purpose computing, the purpose has been to accelerate (a) specific part(s) of the code, called (a) kernel(s). The initial GPU-compute benchmark suites, which are still widely used today, hence consist of relatively simple workloads that are composed of one or few kernels with specific unambiguous execution characteristics. In contrast, we find that modern-day real-life GPU-compute applications are much more complex consisting of many more kernels with differing characteristics. A fundamental question can hence be raised: are current benchmark suites still representative for modern real-life applications? In this paper, we introduce Cactus, a collection of widely used real-life open-source GPU-compute applications. The aim of this work is to offer a new perspective on GPU-compute benchmarking: while existing benchmark suites are designed in a bottom-up fashion (i.e., starting from kernels that are likely to perform well on gpus), we perform GPU-compute benchmarking in a top-down fashion, starting from complex real-life applications that are composed of multiple kernels. We characterize the Cactus benchmarks by quantifying their kernel execution time distribution, by analyzing the workloads using the roofline model, by performing a performance metrics correlation analysis, and by classifying their constituent kernels through multi-dimensional data analysis. The overall conclusion is that the Cactus workloads execute many more kernels, include more diverse and more complex execution behavior, and cover a broader range of the workload space compared to the prevalently used benchmark suites. The comparison and alignment of DNA and protein sequences are important tasks in molecular biology and bioinformatics. One of the most well known algorithms to perform the string-matching operation present in these tasks is the Smith-Waterman algorithm (SW). However, it is a computation intensive algorithm, and many researchers have developed heuristic strategies to avoid using it, specially when using large databases to perform the search. There are several efficient implementations of the SW algorithm on general purpose processors. These implementations try to extract data-level parallelism taking advantage of single-instruction multiple-data extensions (SIMD), capable of performing several operations in parallel on a set of data. In this paper, we propose a more efficient data parallel implementation of the SW algorithm. Our proposed implementation obtains a 30% reduction in the execution time relative to the previous best data-parallel alternative. In this paper we review different alternative implementation of the SW algorithm, compare them with our proposal, and present preliminary results for some heuristic implementations. Finally, we present a detailed study of the computational complexity of the different alignment algorithms presented and their behavior on the different aspect of the CPU microarchitecture.
