Dynamic instrumentation of GPGPU binaries makes possible real-time introspection methods for performance debugging, correctness checks, workload characterization, and runtime optimization. Such instrumentation involves inserting code at the instruction level of an application, while the application is running, thereby able to accurately profile data-dependent application behavior. Runtime overheads seen from instrumentation, however, can obviate its utility. This paper shows how a combination of information flow analysis and symbolic execution can be used to alleviate these overheads. The methods and their effectiveness are demonstrated for a variety of GPGPU codes written in OpenCL that run on AMD GPU target backends. Kernels that can be analyzed entirely via symbolic execution need not be instrumented, thus eliminating kernel runtime overheads altogether. For the remaining GPU kernels, our results show 5-38% improvements in kernel runtime overheads.

Domain Specific Languages or Active Library frameworks have recently emerged as an important method for gaining performance portability, where an application can be efficiently executed on a wide range of HPC architectures without significant manual modifications. Embedded DSLs such as OP2, provides an API embedded in general purpose languages such as C/C++/Fortran. They rely on source-to-source translation and code refactorization to translate the higher-level API calls to platform specific parallel implementations. OP2 targets the solution of unstructured-mesh computations, where it can generate a variety of parallel implementations for execution on architectures such as CPUs, gpus, distributed memory clusters and heterogeneous processors making use of a wide range of platform specific optimizations. Compiler tool-chains supporting source-to-source translation of code written in mainstream languages currently lack the capabilities to carry out such wide-ranging code transformations. Clang/LLVM's Tooling library (LibTooling) has long been touted as having such capabilities but have only demonstrated its use in simple source refactoring tasks. In this paper we introduce OP2-Clang, a source-to-source translator based on LibTooling, for OP2's C/C++ API, capable of generating target parallel code based on SIMD, OpenMP, CUDA and their combinations with MPI. OP2-Clang is designed to significantly reduce maintenance, particularly making it easy to be extended to generate new parallelizations and optimizations for hardware platforms. In this research, we demonstrate its capabilities including (1) the use of LibTooling's AST matchers together with a simple strategy that use parallelization templates or skeletons to significantly reduce the complexity of generating radically different and transformed target code and (2) chart the challenges and solution to generating optimized parallelizations for OpenMP, SIMD and CUDA. Methods and software tools for automated design and generation of OpenCL programs based on the algebra of algorithms are proposed. OpenCL is a framework for developing parallel software that executes across heterogeneous platforms consisting of general-purpose processors and/or hardware accelerators. The proposed approach consists in using high-level algebra-algorithmic specifications of programs represented in natural linguistic form and rewriting rules. The developed software tools provide the automated design of algorithm schemes based on a superposition of Glushkov algebra constructs that are considered as reusable components. The tools automatically generate code in a target programming language on the basis of the specifications. In most computing problems, a large part of hardware resources is utilized by computations inside loops, therefore the use of automatic parallelization of cyclic operators is most efficient for them. However, the existing automatic code parallelizing tools, such as Par4All, don't account the limited amount of accelerator's onboard memory space while real-life problems demand huge amounts of data to be processed. Thus, there is a need for the development of a parallelization technique embracing the cases of massive computational tasks involving big data. In the paper, a method and a software tool for semi-automatic parallelization of cyclic operators based on loop tiling and data serialization are developed. The parallelization technique uses rewriting rules system to transform programs. The framework for parallelization of loops for optimization of computations using graphics processing units allows semi-automatic parallelization of sequential programs. The Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is a scanning probe technique widely used to produce nanometric scaled images of virtually any kind of non-conductive or biological surface. Depending on the scanning dimensions an expected AFM image structure is subjected to be modified by great amounts of external noise (low Signal/Noise ratios) - electrical or mechanical - and/or blurring due to the geometry of the measuring probe. In order to minimize such effects, image restoration techniques can be employed. The one based on the minimization of the Tikhonov's regularization functional is described, taking into account the characteristics of the measuring probe and the S/N ratio. This work proposes optimizations on both serial and parallel restoration algorithms, using CUDA library on a general purpose Graphics processing Unit, GPGPU, in terms of time performance and quality of restoration in regime of high speed imaging, one frame/sec or more. The results obtained are so far very promising, reaching speedups up to 43x over previous implementations. © 2014 IEEE.

general-purpose Graphics processing Units (GPgpus) are employed in today's fastest supercomputers to accelerate a variety of scientific compute workloads. These workloads typically comprise of data-parallel mathematical kernels that are well suited for execution on gpus. The hyperplane sweep operation is one such mathematical kernel that is commonly used in high-performance computing. In this paper, we characterize the conventional bulk synchronous hyperplane sweep implementation currently used by gpus and identify significant performance improvement potential by breaking the operation into finer-grain tasks. Guided by this characterization, we propose multi-grain task decomposition and scheduling techniques to optimize the operation. We use KRIPKE as a case study that features the sweep operation, and we show that our proposed optimizations achieve 41% speedup over the bulk synchronous implementation.

We investigate to what extent a hundred publicly available, popular neural language models capture meaning systematically. Sentence embeddings obtained from pretrained or fine-tuned language models can be used to perform particular tasks, such as paraphrase detection, semantic textual similarity assessment or natural language inference. Common to all of these tasks is that paraphrastic sentences, that is, sentences that carry (nearly) the same meaning, should have (nearly) the same embeddings regardless of surface form. We demonstrate that performance varies greatly across different language models when a specific type of meaning-preserving transformation is applied: two sentences should be identified as paraphrastic if one of them contains a negated antonym in relation to the other one, such as I am not guilty versus I am innocent. We introduce and release SemAntoNeg, a new test suite containing 3152 entries for probing paraphrasticity in sentences incorporating negation and antonyms. Among other things, we show that language models fine-tuned for natural language inference outperform other types of models, especially the ones fine-tuned to produce general-purpose sentence embeddings, on the test suite. Furthermore, we show that most models designed explicitly for paraphrasing are rather mediocre in our task. © 2022 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Sentiment analysis is a widely researched area within Natural Language processing (NLP), attracting significant interest due to the advent of automated solutions. Despite this, the task remains challenging because of the inherent complexity of languages and the subjective nature of sentiments. It is even more challenging for less-studied and lessresourced languages such as Lithuanian. Our review of existing Lithuanian NLP research reveals that traditional machine learning methods and classification algorithms have limited effectiveness for the task. In this work, we address sentiment analysis of Lithuanian five-star-based online reviews from multiple domains that we collect and clean. We apply transformer models to this task for the first time, exploring the capabilities of pre-trained multilingual Large Language Models (LLMs), specifically focusing on fine-tuning BERT and T5 models. Given the inherent difficulty of the task, the fine-tuned models perform quite well, especially when the sentiments themselves are less ambiguous: 80.74% and 89.61% testing recognition accuracy of the most popular one- and five-star reviews respectively. They significantly outperform current commercial state-of-the-art general-purpose LLM GPT-4. We openly share our fine-tuned LLMs online. © 2024 CEUR-WS. All rights reserved.
