the concept of direct current distribution minigrids has been gaining ground in academia and industry regarding the development of distribution grid applications with high penetration of distributed energy sources and storage systems, as DC distribution system facilitates the grid's integration of sources and loads. this work presents the development of a direct current distribution microgrid installed in the laboratory of the Grupo de Estudos e Desenvolvimento de Alternativas Energéticas, of the Universidade Federal do Pará. the developed grid is composed of three combined photovoltaic generation and battery storage systems, utiling commercial charge controllers as interfaces onto the, and three load banks. these are distributed over the 200 m grid in a ring topology, with a nominal 24 VDC bus. Measurements are made at strategic points on the grid to access the system behavior under specific operating conditions, being normal or under fault conditions. the results attest the microgrid's ability to reliably supply the loads, as long as it respects the limitations of the implemented power generation and storage capacities. In addition, it was found that the characteristics related to the topology of the commercial charge controller benefits the power quality for the developed grid size and topology. © PEMD *** right reserved.

Traffic consolidation has been proposed to save energy in data center networks. However, existing centralized traffic consolidation approaches focus on achieving optimal network energy saving, without considering the need to be responsive to traffic variability. In this paper, we present DREAM, a distributed flowlet-level traffic consolidation framework for achieving energy efficiency in data center networks. DREAM splits a TCP flow across multiple paths based on ECN feedback by adapting the path selection probability for sending a flowlet. this helps to choose a path while avoid congestion/queue build-up at switches. distributed agents in DREAM are implemented in Open vSwitch at each server without modifying applications, TCP, or the hardware switches in the data center network. Testbed evaluations using traces from Wikipedia web service and Facebook MapReduce traffic prove that DREAM on average achieves at least 15.8% energy saving for the data center network, while state-of-the-art approaches such as CARPO and ElasticTree produce 11.6% and 8.4% energy saving, respectively. the packet drop ratio in DREAM is less than 0.01% while the best among the alternatives, ElasticTree, has at least 0.19% drop ratio. DREAM also has 30% lower application-level latency than state-of-the-art centralized traffic consolidation approaches.

With the popularity of microservice architecture and the increasing complexity of services, how to effectively monitor application performance becomes more and more important. Under the guidance of the Dapper system of Google, many distributed tracking systems have emerged. the most essential part of the distributed tracking system is how to access the information of trace. In this paper, a trace agent based on byte code enhancement technology is presented. then, the design of the agent and the construction of the trace logic are described in detail. the availability of agents is verified from the aspects of overhead and effectiveness under real environment. Finally, the result of experiment proves that it is convenient and effective to use the trace agent to get the information of trace from applications in Java language.

Large-scale classification of text streams is an essential problem that is hard to solve. Batch processing systems are scalable and proved their effectiveness for machine learning but do not provide low latency. On the other hand, state-of-the-art distributed stream processing systems are able to achieve low latency but do not support the same level of fault tolerance and determinism. In this work, we discuss how the distributed streaming computational model and fault tolerance mechanisms can affect the correctness of text classification data flow. We also propose solutions that can mitigate the revealed pitfalls. © 2019 Authors.

Template-free protein structure prediction seeks three-dimensional structures that organize the serially-bonded amino acids in ways that lower interatomic energy. It is now well understood that energy functions are unreliable guides towards biologically-active structures. this realization raises questions on the proper role and utilization of energy functions. Recent work suggests employing complementary information in the form of amino-acid contacts. Here, we advance this line of work and leverage multi-objective optimization to investigate a variety of combinations of interatomic energy and contact-based scoring. Evaluation on diverse datasets demonstrates the superiority of combining contact information with energy functions in a multi-objective optimization setting for template-free protein structure prediction.

With the rapid development of wireless communication technologies for electrical vehicles (EVs), as a critical part of a pure EV, batteries could be attacked (e.g., draining energy) to reduce driving range and increase driving range anxiety. However, no methods have been proposed to ensure security of EV batteries. In this paper, we propose the first battery attacks, which can turn on air condition and stop battery charging process by sending requests through a smartphone without being noticed by users. We then propose a Battery authentication method (Bauth) to detect the battery attacks. We firstly build a data-driven behavior model to describe a user's habits in turning on air condition and stopping battery charging. In the behavior model, to distinguish users that share a vehicle for high modeling accuracy, we apply the random forest technology to identify each user based on battery state. based on the established behavior model, we then build a reinforcement learning model that judges whether an AC-turn-on or batter-charge-stop request from a smartphone is from the real user based on current vehicle states. We conducted real-life daily driving experiments with different participants to evaluate the battery attack detection accuracy of Bauth. the experimental results show that Bauth can prevent EV batteries from being attacked effectively in comparison with another method and its attack detection accuracy reaches as high as 93.44%.

An Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) is a medical device used for the detection of potentially fatal cardiac arrhythmias and their treatment through the delivery of electrical shocks intended to restore normal heart rhythm. An ICD reprogramming attack seeks to alter the device's parameters to induce unnecessary therapy or prevent required therapy. In this paper, we present a formal approach for the synthesis of ICD reprogramming attacks that are both effective, i.e., lead to fundamental changes in the required therapy, and stealthy, i.e., are hard to detect. We focus on the discrimination algorithm underlying Boston Scientific devices (one of the principal ICD manufacturers) and formulate the synthesis problem as one of multi-objective optimization. Our solution technique is based on an Optimization Modulo theories encoding of the problem and allows us to derive device parameters that are optimal with respect to the effectiveness-stealthiness tradeoff. Our method can be tailored to the patient's current condition, and readily generalizes to new rhythms. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first to derive systematic ICD reprogramming attacks designed to maximize therapy disruption while minimizing detection.

Location-based feed-following is a trending service that can provide contextually relevant information to users based on their locations. In this paper, we consider the view selection problem in a location-based feed-following system that continuously provides aggregated query results over feeds that are located within a certain range from users. Previous solutions adopt a user-centric approach and require re-optimizations of the view selection once users move their locations. Such methods limit the system's scalability to the number of users and can be very costly when a substantial number of users move their locations. To solve the problem, we propose the new concept of location-centric query plans. In this approach, we use a grid to partition the space into cells and generate view selection and query processing plans for each cell, and user queries will be evaluated using the query plans associated with the users' current locations. In this way, the problem's complexity and dynamicity is largely determined by the granularity of the grid instead of the number of users. To minimize the query processing cost, we further propose an algorithm to generate an optimized set of materialized views to store the aggregated events of some feeds and a number of location-centric query plans for each grid cell. the algorithm can also efficiently adapt the plans according to the movement of the users. We implement a prototype system by using Redis as the back-end in-memory storage system for the materialized views and conduct extensive experiments over two real datasets to verify the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.

the paper presents a new approach to implementation of intelligent distributed scanning and analytical processing of Web-content for detection of the Internet inappropriate information. the offered architecture of the component of the intelligent distributed scanners eliminates restrictions on capacity and localization of scanners in network by decentralized management of loading. the offered architecture of the component of analytical processing uses a set of the binary qualifiers based on machine learning methods. Experimental assessment of the proposed solutions showed their high efficiency on the classifier training time and on the completeness and the accuracy of inappropriate information detection.
