Impacts on natural and human systems have already been observed due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions [17]. To reduce these emissions, a transition to a low-carbon economy is required. Carbon taxes can be used as a tool for pricing in the negative externalities of pollution and enabling a more rapid transition to a low-carbon economy. this paper proposes the use of agent-based models to simulate an electricity market. We have used the United Kingdom as an exemplar, however any country can be used through parametrisation. We vary carbon tax to observe the effects on investment up until 2050. We find that a carbon tax of 70 pound ($90) per tonne of CO2 is sufficient in driving investment to an almost 100% renewable energy supply. A less aggressive option, however, of setting a carbon tax at 20 pound ($26) would lead to a 50% low-carbon, 50% traditional generation energy mix.

Recent studies indicate that lncRNA plays key roles in tumorigenesis and misexpression of lncRNAs can lead to change in expression profiles of various target genes involved in different aspects of cancer progression. However, research on classifying multiple cancer types using only lncRNA is rarely found. In this paper, we explored the capability of lncRNA in classifying cancer types by employing four deep neural networks - multi-layer perceptron (MLP), longshort- term memory (LSTM), convolutional neural network (CNN) and deep autoencoder (DAE). For experiment, RNA-seq expression values from TCGA for 8 cancers - BLCA, CESC, COAD, HNSC, KIRP, LGG, LIHC, and LUAD - are used. the combined dataset consists of 3656 patients with expression values for 12309 lncRNAs. the performance of the models in terms of accuracy ranges from 94% to 98%, which shows lncRNA expression profiles as the better signature compared to the mRNA expression profiles in classifying cancer types.

the increase in Electric Vehicles (EV) penetration may add a significant amount of load to the power grid potentially causing several challenges like overloading of assets and big voltage drops on feeder lines. Overcoming those challenges will be hard because of the variability and unpredictability of EV loads, namely, the lack of information on when, where, for how long or how fast charging processes of EVs would take place. However, the EV extra load had arguably not been taken into account when the distribution grid was designed originally. In addition, expanding the distribution and transmission capacity is a very costly and long process. Hence, it is necessary to adopt a smart EV charging approach to address the issues of peak load and power quality. this work focuses on proposing and evaluating a new smart EV charging controller inspired by the slow start mechanism of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) on the Internet. the controller is a part of a distributed smart charging architecture and responds to indication signals regarding the grid state in real time. the indication process adopts a traffic light model and is performed in a distributed way at the grid connection point of each individual Charging Station (CS). thanks to the notification mechanism, the controller is able to deal with the overloading of assets and keeps the voltage within the allowed boundaries as predefined by the grid operator. the voltage control considers not only the CS but also predetermined remote points.

Power grids are becoming increasingly intelligent. However, the boundaries between their operational technology (OT) environments and the (vulnerable) IT networks tend to dissolve. In such systems, several technical and economic factors can significantly affect the upgrading decisions. these factors include, just to name a few, limited time and budget as well as legal constraints. To cope with these challenges, an involved decision maker has to prudently prioritize the possible vulnerability remediation actions. the key objective of prioritization decisions is to efficiently reduce the inherent security risk to which the system in question is exposed. Due to the critical role of power systems, their decision makers tend to enhance the system resilience against extreme events. that is, they seek to avoid decision options associated with extreme (adverse) consequences. therefore, we propose an integrated risk-based decision-support methodology for prioritizing risk remediation activities. It leverages (i) the Time-To-Compromise (TTC) metric to quantitatively assess the security risk, and (ii) a game-theoretical model to support the decision-making process. the game model considers carefully the specific risk attitude of the decision makers involved in the patch management process across electric power organizations.

this article presents the technique for botnet detection using the distributed systems in the local area network. distributed system contains host and network levels. At the host level, the botnets detection is based on Bayes classification. In order to perform the classification, the classes and subclasses were constructed on the basis of botnets patterns. An algorithm for classifier training was developed. the network level provides the exchange of the classification results for the knowledge transfer to the rest of the antivirus program units of the distributed system.

In the edge network of the Internet of things (IoT), the integration of blockchain and edge computing provides reliable and secure manners for large scale of services. Blockchain insures security with its distributed storage and consensus mechanisms, meanwhile edge computing brings forth large resources. However, facing communication, computing, caching and other issues, the integration is arduous to deploy. In this paper, we focus on solving the communication dilemmas in the integration and establish a messaging model for IoT systems, designing a two-layer edge computing architecture with different types of blockchain running on it. based the practical application of BUAA vehicle monitoring system, we set up new edge nodes, redefine the data access through the blockchain and define the selection of the servers. Compared to the centralized cloud, the hybrid messaging protocol is proved to be more effective. the results show that the messaging model can run well on the application, transforming the IoT cloud center into a distributed mode. Under the security of blockchain and the computing power supported by edge computing, the advantages of distributed systems can be fully utilized.

the task to increase the scalability of the distributed computer systems (DCS) arises the new challenges for developing of the effective resources control mechanisms for such systems. this issue is particularly significant for the distributed computer systems with a decentralized resource control mechanism. the paper describes a resource reservation mechanism which allow to prevent the total loading of DCS computational resources. this research is devoted to the study of the functioning of the resource control system (RCS) based on a networkcentric approach in the context of resource reservations.

the widespread adoption and popularity of Internet-scale distributed Networks (IDNs) has led to an explosive growth in the infrastructure of these networks. Unfortunately, this growth has also led to a rapid increase in energy consumption with its accompanying environmental impact. therefore, energy efficiency is a key consideration in operating and designing these power-hungry networks. In this paper, we study the greening potential of combining two contrasting sources of renewable energy, namely solar energy and Open Air Cooling (OAC). OAC involves the use of outside air to cool data centers if the weather outside is cold and dry enough. therefore OAC is likely to be abundant in colder weather and at night-time. In contrast, solar energy is correlated with sunny weather and day-time. Given their contrasting natures, we study whether synthesizing these two renewable sources of energy can yield complementary benefits. Given the intermittent nature of renewable energy, we use batteries and load shifting to facilitate the use of green energy and study trade-offs in brown energy reduction based on key parameters like battery size, number of solar panels, and radius of load movement. We do a detailed cost analysis, including amortized cost savings as well as a break-even analysis for different energy prices. Our results look encouraging and we find that we can significantly reduce brown energy consumption by about 55% to 59% just by combining the two technologies. We can increase our savings further to between 60% to 65% by adding load movement within a radius of 5000kms, and to between 73% to 89% by adding batteries.

We aim to increase the profit of a given generator participating in a single-sided wholesale energy market. We model the market clearing mechanism and the behavior of other generators competing in the market. We utilize interesting structures in the data to classify generators and then build novel supervised competition models for each class of generators. We leverage these models to build an interactive system through which we discover better bidding strategies for the given generator using reinforcement learning (RL). We relax several assumptions made in existing works in order to make the problem more relevant to real life. Our MDP formulation enables us to tackle action space explosion in an efficient way. Further, our state formulation enables us to compute optimal actions across all time-steps of the day in parallel. We compare the performance of the proposed RL based bidding agent with the historical real world performance of a generator in a wholesale energy market.

Data Stream Processing (DSP) has emerged as a key enabler to develop pervasive services that require to process data in a near real-time fashion. DSP applications keep up with the high volume of produced data by scaling their execution on multiple computing nodes, so as to process the incoming data flow in parallel. Workloads variability requires to elastically adapt the application parallelism at run-time in order to avoid over-provisioning. Elasticity policies for DSP have been widely investigated, but mostly under the simplifying assumption of homogeneous infrastructures. the resulting solutions do not capture the richness and inherent complexity of modern infrastructures, where heterogeneous computing resources are available on-demand. In this paper, we formulate the problem of controlling elasticity on heterogeneous resources as a Markov Decision Process (MDP). the resulting MDP is not easily solved by traditional techniques due to state space explosion, and thus we show how linear Function Approximation and Tile Coding can be used to efficiently compute elasticity policies at run-time. In order to deal with parameters uncertainty, we integrate the proposed approach with Reinforcement Learning algorithms. Our numerical evaluation shows the efficacy of the presented solutions compared to standard methods in terms of accuracy and convergence speed.
