In recent years, computervision methods have been exploited in traffic surveillance systems to perform video image analysis, e.g. extracting statistical traffic information and detecting events. However, not much work was dedicated to the prediction of events, in particular of traffic congestions. this paper has two contributions: First, it presents an embedded computervision system which collects traffic data, and secondly, it reports an innovative method for predicting traffic congestions. For the latter purpose, three traffic parameters are measured and analysed: average speed, vehicle density and the amount of lane changes. the novelty of the current work resides in the use of lane changes in order to predict a traffic congestion. It is shown how the amount of lane changes can be used for improving the prediction of a traffic congestion event soiree minutes before the traffic congestion starts. the validity of the proposed method is tested using data from a real scenario, which have been collected by the embedded computervision system also presented in this work. the obtained results are discussed, along with possible future improvements and new research directions.
the techniques of machine vision are extensively applied to agricultural science, and it has great perspective especially in the plant protection field, which ultimately leads to crops management. the paper describes ...

this paper presents a novel pseudo-likelihood equation for the estimation of the Potts MRF model parameter on second-order neighborhood systems. Experiments with simulated images comparing the proposed estimation method with a recent maximum-likelihood estimation approach derived in literature show the superiority of our methodology. In order to evaluate the performance of the estimation method, we proposed a hypothesis testing approach to validate the obtained results. the test statistic together withthe p-values, calculated through our approximation for the asymptotic variance of maximum pseudo-likelihood estimators, provide a complete framework for quantitative analysis of Potts model parameter estimation in imageprocessing, pattern recognition and computervision applications using MRF models.

We present a method for fast and automatic labeling of anatomical structures in MR FastView localizer images. which call useful for automatic MR, examination planning. FastView is a modern MR protocol, that provides larger planning fields of view than previously available with isotropic 3D resolution by scanning during continuous movement, of the patient table. Hence, full 3D information is obtained within short acquisition time. Anatomical labeling is done by registering the images to a statistical atlas created from training image data beforehand. the statistical atlas consists of a statistical model of deformation and a statistical model of grey value appearance. It is generated by non-rigid registration and principal component analysis of the resulting deformation fields and registered images. Labeling of all unseen FastView image is done by non-rigid registration of the image to the statistical atlas and propagating the labels from the atlas to the image. In our implementation, the statistical models of deformation and appearance are both implemented oil the GPU (graphicsprocessing unit), which permits computing the atlas based labeling using GPU hardware accelaration. them running times of about 10 to 30 seconds are of the same magnitude as the, image acquisition itself which allows for practical usage in clinical MR routine.

We present a method for the fast and efficient tracking of motion in cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) cines. A GPU accelerated Levenberg-Marquardt non-linear least squares optimization procedure for finite element non-rigid registration was implemented on an NVIDIA graphics card using the OpenGL environment. Points were tracked from frame to frame using forward and backward incremental registration. the inner (endocardial) and outer (epicardial) boarders of the heart were tracked in six short axis cities with similar to 25 frames through the cardiac cycle in 36 patients with vascular disease. Contours placed by two independent expert observers using a semi-automatic ventricular analysis program (CIM version 4.6) were used as the,Old standard. the method took 0.5 seconds per frame, and the maximum Hausdorff errors were less than 2 mm on average which was of the same order as the expert inter-observer error. In conclusion, GPU accelerated Levenberg-Marquardt non-linear optimization enables fast and accurate tracking, of cardiac motion in CMR images.

Text, graphics and half-tones are the major constituents of any document page. While half-tone can be characterised by its inherent intensity variation, text and graphics share common characteristics except difference in spatial distribution. the success of document image analysis systems depends on the proper segmentation of text and graphics as text is further subdivided into other classes such as heading, table and math-zones. Segmentation of graphics is essential for better OCR performance and vectorization in computervision applications. graphics segmentation from text is particularly difficult in the context of graphics made of small components (dashed or dotted lines etc.) which have many features similar to texts. Here we propose a robust technique for segmenting all sorts of graphics and texts in any orientation from document pages.

In this paper, a new algorithm for vehicle license plate location is proposed, on the basis of multi agent systems. the algorithm was tested with 400 natural-scene gray-level vehicle images of different backgrounds and ambient illumination. the camera focused in the plate, while the angle of view and the distance from the vehicle varied according to the experimental setup. the license plates properly segmented about 99 percent of input images (99%).
the way catadioptric images are acquired implies that they present radial distortions. therefore, classical processing may not be suitable. this statement will be illustrated by considering edge detection matter. Clas...
