In this paper, we introduce a novel Web service based cooperative workflow model which not only greatly improves the efficiency of concurrent processing but also makes results combination easier. Web service based workflows provide support for aggregating Web services into new higher-level Web services by means of process composition. We add states and actions to the activity, and realize the cooperation between different activities. Petri-nets are used to analyze and verify the proposed model. A cooperative businesses process is also modeled by Petri-nets as a demonstration. In addition, we realize the model in an open source cooperative workflow software - Bonita and test it with the ActiveBPEL engine. then we apply the model to a cooperative car design scenario. the results indicate that the proposed model is valid and effective. ©2007 IEEE.

Many computer vision and image processing tasks require the preservation of local discontinuities, terminations and bifurcations. Denoising with feature preservation is a challenging task and in this paper, we present a novel technique for preserving complex oriented structures such as junctions and corners present in images. this is achieved in a two stage process namely, (1) All image data are pre-processed to extract local orientation information using a steerable Gabor filter bank. the orientation distribution at each lattice point is then represented by a continuous mixture of Gaussians. the continuous mixture representation can be cast as the Laplace transform of the mixing density over the space of positive definite (covariance) matrices. this mixing density is assumed to be a parameterized distribution, namely, a mixture of Wisharts whose Laplace transform is evaluated in a closed form expression called the Rigaut type function, a scalar-valued function of the parameters of the Wishart distribution. Computation of the weights in the mixture Wisharts is formulated as a sparse deconvolution problem. (2) the feature preserving denoising is then achieved via iterative convolution of the given image data with the Rigaut type function. We present experimental results on noisy data, real 2D images and 3D MRI data acquired from plant roots depicting bifurcating roots. Superior performance of our technique is depicted via comparison to the state-of-the-art anisotropic diffusion filter. ©2007 IEEE.

the endovascular repair of a traumatic rupture of the thoracic aorta - that would otherwise lead to the death of the patient - is performed by delivering a stent-graft into the vessel at the rupture location. the age range of the affected patients is large and the stent-graft will stay in the body for the remaining life. the technique is relatively new, and no experience with regard to long-term effects, and durability exists. To predict long-term complications, such as ruptures or destructive interactions with surrounding tissue during the life of the patient, it is important to understand the - rather intense and constant - movement of the stent- graft during the cardiac cycle. A computed tomography with heart gating (gated CT) acquires sequences that show the region of the stent-graft at different time points. We analyze the motion of stent-grafts with a model based approach. Stent-grafts are represented as sparse sets of axis points extracted from the gated CT, and motion patterns are captured by a minimum description length based group-wise registration of the stent-graft at different time points. No parameterization or a priori definition of the topology is necessary, and highly variable elasticity properties in the data volume can by accounted for by the sparse statistical model, that captures correlations and motion components of the stent-graft. We report results for deformation models and registration accuracy for 5 patients.

Designing mathematical morphology algorithms on FPGAs: An application to image processing

Mathematical morphology is a well-known image and signal processing technique. However, most morphological tools such as Matlab are not suited for strong real-time constraints. We address this problem through hardware implementation on FPGAs. A library of VHDL basic modules was built to allow the implementation of complex algorithms. We also propose an environment for generating VHDL code from a high-level description of a user-defined algorithm. We then integrate morphological algorithms in more complex applications: vision-based robots or real-time processing and displaying of video flows. In order to facilitate this integration, a development board as well as an interface between a FPGA and Matlab were realized.

the presented system (Unicam) offers a complex state-of-the-art machine vision equipment and technology to provide automated video image vehicle detection devices dedicated for traffic monitoring applications. the system provides real time video image capturing, digital signal processing, compression, storage, and transmission over communication interfaces. It uses proprietary artificial intelligence algorithms and special image processing modules to achieve highly accurate vehicles detection. According to the users' needs, the system can be used for detection of red-light violations at road intersections, speed measurement, traffic data collection, video recording, or surveillance. Yet another possible application of the system is surveys based on license plate recognition for transportation engineers, stolen car searching, or tolltag data collection. the system functionality has been improved by coupling camera sensors with specialized real-time processing units and adding networking capability. Implementation of video detection algorithms, hardware design units, and networking features are also discussed.

this study was carried out to develop a sensor to detect weeds in paddy field. A machine vision system consisted of an optical band-pass filter equipped monochrome CCD camera and a frame grabber installed on a personal computer was selected for the purpose. three optical filters of center wavelengths of 560, 680 and 800 [nm] with a bandwidth of 10 [nm] were tested before developing algorithms for the system. An algorithm for the vision system was developed using image processing procedures and pattern recognition techniques. Actual field images of weeds and rice were taken using the vision system at several growth stages of rice. images of the plants (weeds and rice) were easily distinguished from wet soil background by the thresholding process. To discriminate between weeds and rice from the images of plants, a classifier using features based on pixel values and numbers of the plant images was developed. the minimum distance method of pattern recognition was applied to develop a classifier. image processing algorithms to detect weed images was developed using the classifier. Performance of the machine vision system using the developed algorithms was tested with all the images taken. the test resulted that the developed system is favorable but requires more study for practical use.

In this paper, we present a general framework for solving the shape from shading problem for a class of surfaces called implicit surfaces by applying image synthesis techniques from computer graphics. the method relies on iterative synthesis of images from object descriptions in order to minimize an error function. the technique is illustrated in detail for quadric surfaces, with the ellipsoid as the specific example. the advantage of this approach is that reconstructing the shape of objects from shading is possible even under very general imaging conditions.

the central problem in any window based approach for image matching is the determination of correct window size. While the window should be small enough to have same disparity level throughout, it must be large enough to contain variations that can be matched. thus it is obvious that a fixed window size is not enough. there have been many approaches to vary the window size that is used for matching. Most of them work by modeling the disparity variation within the window and then developing a cost function which determines whether or not to reduce the window size at that location. this paper presents a simple fuzzy based approach to vary the window size locally as per the intensity variation. this uses a measure called the fuzzy compactness to determine whether or not the intensity variation in the window is enough to split the window. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

A facial weight-change simulator is presented. It is intended for use in the evaluation of self-perception distortion of anorexia nervosa (AN) patients. processing begins with the extraction of the face from the background. Using minimal user intervention, the face is then divided into regions characterized by different weight-change patterns. A mathematical transformation that models growth and shape modification in living organisms is applied to each region. Finally, a unified color face image is generated, in which the face appears fatter or thinner as intended.
