We propose blind segmentation of images into shape-related 'patches' based on pre-calculated local symmetries (Van Tender, G.J. & Ejima, Y. (1999). (Forthcoming a) Flexible computation of shape symmetries. Submitted for publication) in shape boundary contours. First, lateral weights between all points in the boundary contour map are assigned analogous to Euclidean distance maps in watershed segmentation (Beucher, S. & Lantejoul, C. (1979). Use of watersheds in contour detection. proceedings of the International Workshop on imageprocessing, CCETT, Rennes, France.). Lateral weights are then used to: (1) extract local maxima in symmetries;(2) link maxima within locally enclosed boundary contours;and (3) reconstruct shape contours using symmetry maxima as 'seeds'. the new model overcomes weaknesses of watershed segmentation. the new model closes gaps in relatively more solid image contours, but it is fundamentally different from methods based on contour interpolation (Grossberg, S., Mingolla, E. & Todorove, D. Content-based image retrieval (CBIR) refers to the ability to retrieve images on the basis of image content. Given a query image, the goal of a CBIR system is to search the database and return the n most visually similar images to the query image. In this paper, we describe an approach to CBIR for medical databases that relies on human input, machine learning and computervision. Specifically, we apply expert-level human interaction for solving that aspect of the problem which cannot yet be automated, we use computervision for only those aspects of the problem to which it lends itself best - image characterization - and we employ machine learning algorithms to allow the system to be adopted to new clinical domains. We present empirical results for the domain of high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the lung. Our results illustrate the efficacy of a human-in-the-loop approach to image characterization and the ability of our approach to adapt the retrieval process to a particular clinical domain through the application of machine learning algorithms.

Emerging trends in computer design attempt to include specific solutions for handling images also in general-purpose computers, because of the current spread of multimedia, imageprocessing and computergraphics applications. In this context, this paper proposes hardware pre-fetching techniques specific for caching images: the main issue we state is that most algorithms working opt images exhibit a 2D spatial locality that is not taken into account in current cache organization and data access strategies. To this aim we propose an adaptive local pre-fetching for the image data type;this technique, mirroring the two-dimensional spatial locality of imageprocessing algorithms, results to be more efficient than other approaches, such as sequential pre-fetching and adaptive pre-fetching. Performance is evaluated on different classes of imageprocessing algorithms, namely raster-scan and propagative algorithms, common in computervision and multimedia applications.

Most of the existing coding methods such as predictive coding. transform coding, and vector quantization belong to information-theory-based methods in which image signals are considered as ranidoni signals aiid compressed by exploiting their stochastic properties. Apart from these iiiformation-tlieoretic coding iniethods, research on new approaches such as modelbased coding (which is related to 1)0thimage analysis and computergraphics) has recently intensified. An essential difference between conventional coding methods and these new approaches is the image model they assume. Contrary to conventional coding methods which efficiently represent 2-D waveforms of image signals model-based co ding represent iniage signals using structural image models which take into accomit the 3-D properties of the scene in some sense. there have been two major approaches to model-based image coding.
