the FAA (US Federal Aviation Administration), industry, and DOD (US Department of Defense) are collaborating to evaluate and demonstrate technologies permitting aircraft to land in very low visibilities over a wide range of airports. Called the Synthetic vision System Technology Demonstration Program, the system concept provides an electronic image of the runway to the pilot on a head-up display with an overlay on the display of symbology, providing all the navigation and performance information needed to fly and land the aircraft. the program incorporates millimeter-wave radar, infrared sensor, head-up display, and airborne computerprocessing technologies across a wide range of flight scenarios of interest to the civil aviation industry and to a number of government agencies. the theoretical performance of the system concept at 35 GHz is calculated and compared to the actual performance of the 35-GHz experimental demonstration system for typical approach and runway intrusion detection conditions. there is excellent correlation between the two. the results of tower and flight tests to date indicate that, withthe experimental system, pilots are routinely able to fly to CAT IIIa minimums on the Type I ILS (instrumental landing system) facilities used in the program to date using the millimeter-wave sensor. Very low visibility fog and precipitation conditions encountered in the test have had little effect on the useful range of the millimeter-wave sensor system.< >

Another problem is that some of the most interesting work being done is not called “computergraphics” and is therefore only reported in other fields such as “Precision Engineering” or “imageprocessing.” Interpreting “computergraphics” broadly, this panel will survey the work of three leading Japanese researchers who will each briefly describe the history of computergraphics at their institutions, outline the level of staffing and equipment resources in their laboratories and report on their current areas of research activity. these presentations will be proceeded by the chairman's overview discussion about Japanese University research, in general. the panel will conclude with a question and answer *** Makoto Nagao, Department of Electrical Engineering, Kyoto University, Sakyo, Kyoto, Japan - the main thrust of research at Kyoto University has been in the field of digital imageprocessing systems. Work began in 1965 on the problem of Japanese character recognition. One of the earliest digital processing systems in Japan was also designed. Working from beliefs about the human pattern recognition process, efforts were directed towards the development of a structural approach rather than mathematical theories which were popular during the early days of character recognition research. Pixels in the system contain four parallel components: RGB for full color and an alpha channel for retaining transparency information. the data path of the processor contains four arithmetic elements connected through a crossbar network to a tessellated scratchpad memory. the single instruction, multiple data stream (SIMD) processor executes instructions on four pixel components in parallel. the instruction control unit (ICU) maintains an activity stack for tracking block-structured code, using data-dependent activity flags for conditional disabling subsets of the ALUs. Nested loops and if-then-else constructs can be programmed directly, withthe ICU disabling and reenabling ALUs on the basis of their individual status bits.
