Many Web services operate their own Web crawlers to discover data of interest, despite the fact that large-scale, timely crawling is complex, operationally intensive, and expensive. In this paper, we introduce the extensible crawler, a service that crawls the Web on behalf of its many client applications. Clients inject filters into the extensible crawler; the crawler evaluates all received filters against each Web page, notifying clients of matches. As a result, the act of crawling the Web is decoupled from determining whether a page is of interest, shielding client applications from the burden of crawling the Web *** paper describes the architecture, implementation, and evaluation of our prototype extensible crawler, and also relates early experience from several crawler applications we have built. We focus on the challenges and trade-offs in the system, such as the design of a filter language that is simultaneously expressive and efficient to execute, the use of filter indexing to cheaply match a page against millions of filters, and the use of document and filter partitioning to scale our prototype implementation to high document throughput and large numbers of filters. We argue that the low-latency, high selectivity, and scalable nature of our system makes it a promising platform for taking advantage of emerging real-time streams of data, such as Facebook or Twitter feeds.

A key prerequisite for residential energy conservation is knowing when and where energy is being spent. Unfortunately, the current generation of energy reporting devices only provide partial and coarse grained information or require expensive professional installation. this limitation stems from the presumption that calculating per-appliance consumption requires per-appliance current measurements. However, since appliances typically emit measurable signals when they are consuming energy, we can estimate their consumption using indirect sensing. this paper presents ViridiScope, a fine-grained power monitoring system that furnishes users with an economical, self-calibrating tool that provides power consumption of virtually every appliance in the home. ViridiScope uses ambient signals from inexpensive sensors placed near appliances to estimate power consumption, thus no inline sensor is necessary. We use a model-based machine learning algorithm that automates the sensor calibration process. through experiments in a real house, we show that ViridiScope can estimate the end-point power consumption within 10% error.

We present Quanto, a network-wide time and energy profiler for embedded network devices. By combining well-defined interfaces for hardware power states, fast high-resolution energy metering, and causal tracking of programmer-defined activities, Quanto can map how energy and time are spent on nodes and across a network. Implementing Quanto on the TinyOS operating system required modifying under 350 lines of code and adding 1275 new lines. We show that being able to take fine-grained energy consumption measurements as fast as reading a counter allows developers to precisely quantify the effects of low-level system implementation decisions, such as using DMA versus direct bus operations, or the effect of external interference on the power draw of a low duty-cycle radio. Finally, Quanto is lightweight enough that it has a minimal effect on system behavior: each sample takes 100 CPU cycles and 12 bytes of RAM.

networked systems are often evaluated on overlay testbeds such as PlanetLab and emulation testbeds such as Emulab. Emulation testbeds give users great control over the host and network environments and offer easy reproducibility, but only artificial network conditions. Overlay testbeds provide real network conditions, but are not repeatable environments and provide less control over the *** describe the motivation, design, and implementation of Flexlab, a new testbed with the strengths of both overlay and emulation testbeds. It enhances an emulation testbed by providing the ability to integrate a wide variety of network models, including those obtained from an overlay network. We present three models that demonstrate its usefulness, including "application-centric Internet modeling" that we specifically developed for Flexlab. Its key idea is to run the application within the emulation testbed and use its offered load to measure the overlay network. these measurements are used to shape the emulated network. Results indicate that for evaluation of applications running over Internet paths, Flexlab with this model can yield far more realistic results than either PlanetLab without resource reservations, or Emulab without topological information.

WiFi-based Long Distance (WiLD) networks with links as long as 50-100 km have the potential to provide connectivity at substantially lower costs than traditional approaches. However, real-world deployments of such networks yield very poor end-to-end performance. First, the current 802.11 MAC protocol has fundamental shortcomings when used over long distances. Second, WiLD networks can exhibit high and variable loss characteristics, thereby severely limiting end-to-end *** paper describes the design, implementation and evaluation of WiLDNet, a system that overcomes these two problems and provides enhanced end-to-end performance inWiLD networks. To address the protocol shortcomings, WiLDNet makes several essential changes to the 802.11 MAC protocol, but continues to exploit standard (low-cost) WiFi network cards. To better handle losses and improve link utilization, WiLDNet uses an adaptive loss-recovery mechanism using FEC and bulk acknowledgments. Based on a real-world deployment, WiLDNet provides a 2-5 fold improvement in TCP/UDP throughput (along with significantly reduced loss rates) in comparison to the best throughput achievable by conventional 802.11. WiLDNet can also be configured to adapt to a range of end-to-end performance requirements (bandwidth, delay, loss).

the lack of flexibility in the application-network interface severely limits the ability to develop and tailor distributed applications, such as real-time streaming and multiparty communication, to their communication demands. While network-centric solutions such as overlay networks provide only a single, limited and fixed service, we argue for an application-centric customizable application-network interface that allows applications to control communication. this paper presents ARS, a framework of Abstractions for Resources and Services. the customization of communication services and the integration of network resource information allow an application to dynamically adjust communication setup and transmission paths. Since a customization is highly complex, ARS is designed as a software framework that hides a large part of the complexity while maintaining flexibility and development support by design and code reuse. We discuss the concepts, the structure and the implementation of ARS, and we evaluate the customizability and the performance benefits of ARS with a distributed multicast application in the Internet.

the presented system (Unicam) offers a complex state-of-the-art machine vision equipment and technology to provide automated video image vehicle detection devices dedicated for traffic monitoring applications. the system provides real time video image capturing, digital signal processing, compression, storage, and transmission over communication interfaces. It uses proprietary artificial intelligence algorithms and special image processing modules to achieve highly accurate vehicles detection. According to the users' needs, the system can be used for detection of red-light violations at road intersections, speed measurement, traffic data collection, video recording, or surveillance. Yet another possible application of the system is surveys based on license plate recognition for transportation engineers, stolen car searching, or tolltag data collection. the system functionality has been improved by coupling camera sensors with specialized real-time processing units and adding networking capability. implementation of video detection algorithms, hardware design units, and networking features are also discussed.

Today Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks are causing major threat to perform online business over the Internet. Our previous work proposed an automated model with a new packet marking technique and agent design to counteract DDoS within a single ISP domain. Our approach has many features that are required to minimize the DDoS attacks. For example, our model is invoked only during attack times, identifies the approximate source of attack with a single packet even in case of spoofed source address, identifies different attack signatures for different attacking sources, prevents the attack nearest to the attacking source, has very fast response for any changes in attack traffic pattern, is simple in its implementation and can be incrementally deployed. though the proposed model has several advantages, prevention of the attack is limited to a single ISP domain. In this paper we extend our model to prevent DDoS attacks in multiple ISP domains by retaining all the advantages achieved in our previous work. We also propose a practical implementation of the extended model with a presently working architecture. ©2003 IEEE.
