this paper introduces the Warp Transactional Filesystem (WTF), a novel, transactional, POSIX-compatible filesystem based on a new file slicing API that enables efficient zero-copy file transformations. WTF provides transactional access spanning multiple files in a distributed filesystem. Further, the file slicing API enables applications to construct files from the contents of other files without having to rewrite or relocate data. Combined, these enable a new class of high-performance applications. Experiments show that WTF can qualitatively outperform the industry-standard HDFS distributed filesystem, up to a factor of four in a sorting benchmark, by reducing I/O costs. Microbenchmarks indicate that the new features of WTF impose only a modest overhead on top of the POSIX-compatible API.

We describe the design and implementation of Open vSwitch, a multi-layer, open source virtual switch for all major hypervisor platforms. Open vSwitch was designed de novo for networking in virtual environments, resulting in major design departures from traditional software switching architectures. We detail the advanced flow classification and caching techniques that Open vSwitch uses to optimize its operations and conserve hypervisor resources. We evaluate Open vSwitch performance, drawing from our deployment experiences over the past seven years of using and improving Open vSwitch.

Many data center network (DCN) applications require explicit routing path control over the underlying topologies. this paper introduces XPath, a simple, practical and readily-deployable way to implement explicit path control, using existing commodity switches. At its core, XPath explicitly identifies an end-to-end path with a path ID and leverages a two-step compression algorithm to pre-install all the desired paths into IP TCAM tables of commodity switches. Our evaluation and implementation show that XPath scales to large DCNs and is readily-deployable. Furthermore, on our testbed, we integrate XPath into four applications to showcase its utility.

In recent years Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been deployed in wide range of applications from the health and environment monitoring to building and industrial control. However, the pace of prevalence of WSN is slower than anticipated by the research community due to several reasons including required embedded systems expertise for developing and deploying WSNs;use of proprietary protocols;and limits in scalability and reliability. In this paper we propose PyFUNS (Python-based Framework for Ubiquitous networked Sensors) to address these challenges. PyFUNS handles low level and networking functionalities, using the services provided by Contiki, and leaves to the user only the task of application development in the form of Python scripts. this approach reduces required expertise in embedded systems to develop WSN based applications. PyFUNS also uses 6LoWPAN and CoAP standard protocols to enable interoperability and ease of integration with other systems, pursuing the Internet of things vision. through a real implementation of PyFUNS in two constrained platforms we proved its feasibility in mote devices, as well as its performance in terms of control delay, energy consumption and network traffic in several network topologies. As it is possible with PyFUNS to easily compare performance of different deployments of distributed application, PyFUNS can be used to identify optimal design of distributed application.

With high throughput networks acquiring a crucial role in supporting data-intensive applications, a variety of data center network topologies have been proposed to achieve high capacity at low cost. While this work explores a large number of design points, even in the limited case of a network of identical switches, no proposal has been able to claim any notion of optimality. the case of heterogeneous networks, incorporating multiple line-speeds and port-counts as data centers grow over time, introduces even greater *** this paper, we present the first non-trivial upper-bound on network throughput under uniform traffic patterns for any topology with identical switches. We then show that random graphs achieve throughput surprisingly close to this bound, within a few percent at the scale of a few thousand servers. Apart from demonstrating that homogeneous topology design may be reaching its limits, this result also motivates our use of random graphs as building blocks for design of heterogeneous networks. Given a heterogeneous pool of network switches, we explore through experiments and analysis, how the distribution of servers across switches and the interconnection of switches affect network throughput. We apply these insights to a real-world heterogeneous data center topology, VL2, demonstrating as much as 43% higher throughput with the same equipment.

the resource management of a multi-tenant MapReduce cluster can be hard given unpredictable user demands. Conventional resource management scheme would inevitably create a fair amount of spare resource fragments in the system. On the other hand, MapReduce workloads are prone to have a bottleneck stage in the execution pipeline. To address these two issues under a coherent framework, this paper presents Clotho, a MapReduce workload and runtime co-design that can opportunistically utilize the spare resource fragments in the system to alleviate the bottleneck stage of MapReduce workloads while honoring the SLAs of existing systems. We describe the design and the implementation of Clotho, evaluate it with benchmarks drawn from real MapReduce applications, and demonstrate that it can effectively utilize the spare CPU resource fragments and meanwhile improve the performance of user programs if there is potential to speed up the bottleneck stage of the entire MapReduce execution pipeline. © 2013 ACM.

Automotive systems comprise a high number of networked safety-critical functions. Any design changes or addition of new functionality must be rigorously tested to ensure that no performance or safety issues are introduced, and this consumes a significant amount of time. Validation should be conducted using a faithful representation of the system, and so typically, a full subsystem is built for validation. We present a scalable scheme for emulating a complete cluster of automotive embedded compute units on an FPGA, with accelerated network communication using custom physical level interfaces. With these interfaces, we can achieve acceleration of system emulation by 8x or more, with a systematic way of exploring real-world issues like jitter, network delays, and data corruption, among others. By using the same communication infrastructure as in a real deployed system, this validation is closer to the requirements of standards compliance. this approach also enables hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) validation, allowing rapid prototyping of distributed functions, including changes in network topology and parameters, and modification of time-triggered schedules without physical hardware modification. We present an implementation of this framework on the Xilinx ML605 evaluation board that integrates six FlexRay automotive functions to demonstrate the potential of the framework.

Self-triggered control is a recently proposed control paradigm that abandons the conventional periodic sampling of outputs and updating of control values with the objective to reduce the utilization of communication resources, while still guaranteeing desirable closedloop behaviour. Self-triggered control consists of two elements, namely a feedback controller that computes the next control input, and a triggering mechanism that determines what the next control update time will be. In this paper we present a self-triggered MPC strategy based on quadratic costs, which applies to discrete-time linear systems subject to state and input constraints. this self-triggered MPC law possesses three important features. First of all, the control law is designed such that a priori chosen (sub)optimality levels are guaranteed next to asymptotic stability and constraint satisfaction. Secondly, it is one of the first approaches, which addresses the joint design of both the feedback controller and the triggering mechanism. thirdly, it realizes significant reductions in the usage of network resources and avoids bursts in communication. these beneficial features and various implementation aspects of the proposed self-triggered MPC strategy will be discussed in detail. © 2012 IFAC.

Network deployments handle changing application, workload, and policy requirements via the deployment of specialized network appliances or "middleboxes". Today, however, middlebox platforms are expensive and closed systems, with little or no hooks for extensibility. Furthermore, they are acquired from independent vendors and deployed as standalone devices with little cohesiveness in how the ensemble of middleboxes is managed. As network requirements continue to grow in both scale and variety, this bottom-up approach puts middlebox deployments on a trajectory of growing device sprawl with corresponding escalation in capital and management *** address this challenge, we present CoMb, a new architecture for middlebox deployments that systematically explores opportunities for consolidation, both at the level of building individual middleboxes and in managing a network of middleboxes. this paper addresses key resource management and implementation challenges that arise in exploiting the benefits of consolidation in middlebox deployments. Using a prototype implementation in Click, we show that CoMb reduces the network provisioning cost 1.8-2.5× and reduces the load imbalance in a network by 2-25×.

CORFU organizes a cluster of flash devices as a single, shared log that can be accessed concurrently by multiple clients over the network. the CORFU shared log makes it easy to build distributed applications that require strong consistency at high speeds, such as databases, transactional key-value stores, replicated state machines, and metadata services. CORFU can be viewed as a distributed SSD, providing advantages over conventional SSDs such as distributed wear-leveling, network locality, fault tolerance, incremental scalability and geo-distribution. A single CORFU instance can support up to 200K appends/sec, while reads scale linearly with cluster size. Importantly, CORFU is designed to work directly over network-attached flash devices, slashing cost, power consumption and latency by eliminating storage servers.
