CORFU organizes a cluster of flash devices as a single, shared log that can be accessed concurrently by multiple clients over the network. the CORFU shared log makes it easy to build distributed applications that require strong consistency at high speeds, such as databases, transactional key-value stores, replicated state machines, and metadata services. CORFU can be viewed as a distributed SSD, providing advantages over conventional SSDs such as distributed wear-leveling, network locality, fault tolerance, incremental scalability and geo-distribution. A single CORFU instance can support up to 200K appends/sec, while reads scale linearly with cluster size. Importantly, CORFU is designed to work directly over network-attached flash devices, slashing cost, power consumption and latency by eliminating storage servers.

the packet-based control approach has proven to be a promising method to deal with the communication constraints in networked control systems. Within this framework, model predictive control is often used to design the packet-based controller due to its favored control structure. In this work we discover an implicit relationship of the feedback gains obtained using the model predictive control method between networked predictive control systems and conventional control systems. this relationship is shown to be effective in simplifying the algorithm as well as the framework of the original networked predictive control system structure, and thus is of importance in the implementation of networked predictive control systems. © 2011 Chinese Assoc of Automati.

Multipath TCP, as proposed by the IETF working group mptcp, allows a single data stream to be split across multiple paths. this has obvious benefits for reliability, and it can also lead to more efficient use of networked resources. We describe the design of a multipath congestion control algorithm, we implement it in Linux, and we evaluate it for multihomed servers, data centers and mobile clients. We show that some 'obvious' solutions for multipath congestion control can be harmful, but that our algorithm improves throughput and fairness compared to single-path TCP. Our algorithmis a drop-in replacement for TCP, and we believe it is safe to deploy.

Effective analysis of raw data from networked systems requires bridging the semantic gap between the data and the user's high-level understanding of the system. the raw data represents facts about the system state and analysis involves identifying a set of semantically relevant behaviors, which represent "interesting" relationships between these facts. Current analysis tools, such as wireshark and splunk, restrict analysis to the low-level of individual facts and provide limited constructs to aid users in bridging the semantic gap. Our objective is to enable semantic analysis at a level closer to the user's understanding of the system or process. the key to our approach is the introduction of a logic-based formulation of high-level behavior abstractions as a sequence or a group of related facts. this allows treating behavior representations as fundamental analysis primitives, elevating analysis to a higher semantic-level of abstraction. In this paper, we propose a behavior-based semantic analysis framework which provides: (a) a formal language for modeling high-level assertions over networked systems data as behavior models, (b) an analysis engine for extracting instances of user-specified behavior models from raw data. Our approach emphasizes reuse, composibility and extensibility of abstractions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by applying it to five analyses tasks; modeling a hypothesis on traffic traces, modeling experiment behavior, modeling a security threat, modeling dynamic change and composing higher-level models. Finally, we discuss the performance of our framework in terms of behavior complexity and number of input records.

Current approaches to model checking distributed systems reduce the problem to that of model checking centralized systems: global states involving all nodes and communication links are systematically explored. the frequent changes in the network element of the global states lead however to a rapid state explosion and make it impossible to model check any non-trivial distributed system. We explore in this paper an alternative: a local approach where the network is ignored, a priori: only the local nodes' states are explored and in a separate manner. the set of valid system states is a subset of all combinations of the node local states and checking validity of such a combination is only performed a posteriori, in case of a possible bug. this approach drastically reduces the number of transitions executed by the model checker. It takes for example the classic global approach several minutes to explore the interleaving of messages in the celebrated Paxos distributed protocol even considering only three nodes and a single proposal. Our local approach explores the entire system state in a few seconds. Our local approach does clearly not eliminate the state exponential explosion problem. Yet, it postpones its manifestations till some deeper levels. this is already good enough for online testing tools that restart the model checker periodically from the current live state of a running system. We show for instance how this approach enables us to find two bugs in variants of Paxos.

the oil and gas industries have been great consumers of parallel and distributed computing systems, by frequently running technical applications with intensive processing of terabytes of data. By the emergence of cloud computing which gives the opportunity to hire high-throughput computing resources with lower operational costs, such industries have started to adopt their technical applications to be executed on such high-performance commodity systems. In this paper, we first give an overview of forward/inverse Prestack Kirchhoff Time Migration (PKTM) algorithm, as one of the well-known seismic imaging algorithms. then we will explain our proposed approach to fit this algorithm for running on Google's MapReduce framework. Toward the end, we will analyse the relation between MapReduce-based PKTM completion time and the number of mappers/reducers on pseudo-distributed MapReduce mode.

We show how to build cheap and large CAMs, or CLAMs, using a combination of DRAM and flash memory. these are targeted at emerging data-intensive networked systems that require massive hash tables running into a hundred GB or more, with items being inserted, updated and looked up at a rapid rate. For such systems, using DRAM to maintain hash tables is quite expensive, while on-disk approaches are too slow. In contrast, CLAMs cost nearly the same as using existing on-disk approaches but offer orders of magnitude better performance. Our design leverages an efficient flash-oriented data-structure called BufferHash that significantly lowers the amortized cost of random hash insertions and updates on flash. BufferHash also supports flexible CLAM eviction policies. We prototype CLAMs using SSDs from two different vendors. We find that they can offer average insert and lookup latencies of 0.006ms and 0.06ms (for a 40% lookup success rate), respectively. We show that using our CLAM prototype significantly improves the speed and effectiveness of WAN optimizers.

Many Web services operate their own Web crawlers to discover data of interest, despite the fact that large-scale, timely crawling is complex, operationally intensive, and expensive. In this paper, we introduce the extensible crawler, a service that crawls the Web on behalf of its many client applications. Clients inject filters into the extensible crawler; the crawler evaluates all received filters against each Web page, notifying clients of matches. As a result, the act of crawling the Web is decoupled from determining whether a page is of interest, shielding client applications from the burden of crawling the Web *** paper describes the architecture, implementation, and evaluation of our prototype extensible crawler, and also relates early experience from several crawler applications we have built. We focus on the challenges and trade-offs in the system, such as the design of a filter language that is simultaneously expressive and efficient to execute, the use of filter indexing to cheaply match a page against millions of filters, and the use of document and filter partitioning to scale our prototype implementation to high document throughput and large numbers of filters. We argue that the low-latency, high selectivity, and scalable nature of our system makes it a promising platform for taking advantage of emerging real-time streams of data, such as Facebook or Twitter feeds.

T his paper concerns product model distribution in network-based collaborative design based on a peer-to-peer 3D streaming method CAD meshes are transmitted incrementally from a coarse representation to a finer one in a sequence of LODs (Levels of Detail) defined by form features. A scenario of online design collaboration demonstrates how the streaming method facilitates CAD data sharing in real time. In this scenario, one peer is requesting a LOD model concurrently from multiple peers who own the model in different LODs. An optimization scheme combining Dijkstra's Algorithm with simple heuristics helps determine how the requested model is aggregated from the ones possessed by the others and the transmission routes of individual LOD data. the objective is to minimize the total transfer time, considering the role of each peer in the collaboration and network throughputs. A prototyping system is implemented to verify the streaming method the implementation result shows that it improves the efficiency and practicality of sharing CAD data of large size in networked engineering collaboration.
