We present Quanto, a network-wide time and energy profiler for embedded network devices. By combining well-defined interfaces for hardware power states, fast high-resolution energy metering, and causal tracking of programmer-defined activities, Quanto can map how energy and time are spent on nodes and across a network. Implementing Quanto on the TinyOS operating system required modifying under 350 lines of code and adding 1275 new lines. We show that being able to take fine-grained energy consumption measurements as fast as reading a counter allows developers to precisely quantify the effects of low-level system implementation decisions, such as using DMA versus direct bus operations, or the effect of external interference on the power draw of a low duty-cycle radio. Finally, Quanto is lightweight enough that it has a minimal effect on system behavior: each sample takes 100 CPU cycles and 12 bytes of RAM.

Usenet is a popular distributed messaging and file sharing service: servers in Usenet flood articles over an overlay network to fully replicate articles across all servers. However, replication of Usenet's full content requires that each server pay the cost of receiving (and storing) over 1 Tbyte/day. this paper presents the design and implementation of UsenetDHT, a Usenet system that allows a set of cooperating sites to keep a shared, distributed copy of Usenet articles. UsenetDHT consists of client-facing Usenet NNTP front-ends and a distributed hash table (DHT) that provides shared storage of articles across the wide area. this design allows participating sites to partition the storage burden, rather than replicating all Usenet articles at all *** requires a DHT that maintains durability despite transient and permanent failures, and provides high storage performance. these goals can be difficult to provide simultaneously: even in the absence of failures, verifying adequate replication levels of large numbers of objects can be resource intensive, and interfere with normal operations. this paper introduces Passing Tone, a new replica maintenance algorithm for DHash [7] that minimizes the impact of monitoring replication levels on memory and disk resources by operating with only pairwise communication. Passing Tone's implementation provides performance by using data structures that avoid disk accesses and enable batch *** over a local gigabit network demonstrate that the total system throughput scales linearly as servers are added, providing 5.7 Mbyte/s of write bandwidth and 7 Mbyte/s of read bandwidth per server. State-of-the-art networked storage servers are equipped with increasingly powerful computing capability and large DRAM memory as storage caches. However, their contribution to the performance improvement of networked storage system has become increasingly limited. this is because the client-side memory sizes are also increasing, which reduces capacity misses in the client buffer caches as well as access locality in the storage servers, thus weakening the caching effectiveness of server storage caches. Proactive caching in storage servers is highly desirable to reduce cold misses in clients. We propose an effective way to improve the utilization of storage server resources through prefetching in storage servers for clients. In particular, our design well utilizes two unique strengths of networked storage servers which are not leveraged in existing storage server prefetching schemes. First, powerful storage servers have idle CPU cycles, under-utilized disk bandwidth, and abundant memory space, providing many opportunities for aggressive disk data prefetching. Second, the servers have the knowledge about high-latency operations in storage devices, such as disk head positioning, which enables efficient disk data prefetching based on an accurate cost-benefit analysis of prefetch operations. We present STEP - a Sequentiality and thrashing dEtection based Prefetching scheme, and its implementation with Linux Kernel 2.6.16. Our performance evaluation by replaying Storage Performance Council (SPC)'s OLTP traces shows that server performance improvements are up to 94% with an average of 25%. Improvements with frequently used Unix applications are up to 53% with an average of 12%. Our experiments also show that STEP has little effect on workloads with random access patterns, such as SPC Web-Search traces. © 2007 IEEE.

networked systems are often evaluated on overlay testbeds such as PlanetLab and emulation testbeds such as Emulab. Emulation testbeds give users great control over the host and network environments and offer easy reproducibility, but only artificial network conditions. Overlay testbeds provide real network conditions, but are not repeatable environments and provide less control over the *** describe the motivation, design, and implementation of Flexlab, a new testbed with the strengths of both overlay and emulation testbeds. It enhances an emulation testbed by providing the ability to integrate a wide variety of network models, including those obtained from an overlay network. We present three models that demonstrate its usefulness, including "application-centric Internet modeling" that we specifically developed for Flexlab. Its key idea is to run the application within the emulation testbed and use its offered load to measure the overlay network. these measurements are used to shape the emulated network. Results indicate that for evaluation of applications running over Internet paths, Flexlab with this model can yield far more realistic results than either PlanetLab without resource reservations, or Emulab without topological information.

WiFi-based Long Distance (WiLD) networks with links as long as 50-100 km have the potential to provide connectivity at substantially lower costs than traditional approaches. However, real-world deployments of such networks yield very poor end-to-end performance. First, the current 802.11 MAC protocol has fundamental shortcomings when used over long distances. Second, WiLD networks can exhibit high and variable loss characteristics, thereby severely limiting end-to-end *** paper describes the design, implementation and evaluation of WiLDNet, a system that overcomes these two problems and provides enhanced end-to-end performance inWiLD networks. To address the protocol shortcomings, WiLDNet makes several essential changes to the 802.11 MAC protocol, but continues to exploit standard (low-cost) WiFi network cards. To better handle losses and improve link utilization, WiLDNet uses an adaptive loss-recovery mechanism using FEC and bulk acknowledgments. Based on a real-world deployment, WiLDNet provides a 2-5 fold improvement in TCP/UDP throughput (along with significantly reduced loss rates) in comparison to the best throughput achievable by conventional 802.11. WiLDNet can also be configured to adapt to a range of end-to-end performance requirements (bandwidth, delay, loss).

the explosive growth of the World Wide Web has raised great concerns regarding many challenges - performance, scalability and availability of the Web system. Consequently, Web site builders are increasingly to construct their Web servers as distributed system for solving these problems, and this trend is likely to accelerate. In such systems, a group of loosely-coupled hosts will work together to serve as a single Virtual server. Although the distributed server can provide compelling performance and accommodate the growth of web traffic, it inevitably increases the complexity of system administration. In this paper, we exploit the advantages of Java to design and implement an administration system for addressing this challenging problem.

the authors discuss a job scheduling system implemented on a network of 12 AT&T 3B2 microcomputers, running a transport distributed operating system, the Loadable Illinois networked Kernel (LINK). It is noted that the design overhead for a scheduling system built as part of an existing distributing computer system is very small compared to the design of the operating system itself. Moreover, an implementation allows one to answer many questions concerning load balancing problems that cannot be answered (or cannot be answered precisely) by queueing network models or simulation. the hardware and software environments are described together with the scheduler. Several experiments were performed to test the job scheduling system and it was found that substantial performance increases are possible compared to systems without a job scheduling system.
