Field-programmable gate arrays provide a flexible and easy-to-configure implementation platform that supports the development of tamper-proof networked embedded systems. Many of these systems employ the Advanced Encryption Standard algorithm in order to achieve a secure mode of operation. the paper deals with the design of the real-time networked control system (NCS) for the experimental magnetic levitation system (MLS) which is an example of the highly dynamic and structurally unstable controlled plant. the experimental system under consideration consists of the plant (MLS) equipped with sensor, actuator and a local computer responsible mainly for communication with a remote controller computing values of control feedback and connected with the local computer by a computer network. the design of this NCS is performed using the predictive control approach which is relatively simple for implementation and well suited for systems with variable transmission delays, even several times longer then the sampling period used for discretization of the plant model. In this paper we assume that, the network is a general purpose network without fixed or even constrained latencies.

the aim of this paper is giving a description of the CADDIE (Content Automated design and Developement Integrated Editor), a user friendly authoring tool for the automated production of sharable content objects, mainly oriented to networked learning and learning object design. It is a freely available Open Source application to assist teachers in the publishing of web content without the need to become proficient in HTML, XML markup or anyother language. Contents produced within the CADDIE environment can be exported in the form of self-contained web pages, LATEX files, standard document formats, or SCORM 2004 packages as well, usable on a LMS server or designed for a database SCO repository. this project has been developed by ELKM (E-Learning & Knowledge Management) laboratory and led by the University of Genoa. © 2008 by Knowledge systems Institute Graduate School. We present Quanto, a network-wide time and energy profiler for embedded network devices. By combining well-defined interfaces for hardware power states, fast high-resolution energy metering, and causal tracking of programmer-defined activities, Quanto can map how energy and time are spent on nodes and across a network. Implementing Quanto on the TinyOS operating system required modifying under 350 lines of code and adding 1275 new lines. We show that being able to take fine-grained energy consumption measurements as fast as reading a counter allows developers to precisely quantify the effects of low-level system implementation decisions, such as using DMA versus direct bus operations, or the effect of external interference on the power draw of a low duty-cycle radio. Finally, Quanto is lightweight enough that it has a minimal effect on system behavior: each sample takes 100 CPU cycles and 12 bytes of RAM.

networked systems are often evaluated on overlay testbeds such as PlanetLab and emulation testbeds such as Emulab. Emulation testbeds give users great control over the host and network environments and offer easy reproducibility, but only artificial network conditions. Overlay testbeds provide real network conditions, but are not repeatable environments and provide less control over the *** describe the motivation, design, and implementation of Flexlab, a new testbed with the strengths of both overlay and emulation testbeds. It enhances an emulation testbed by providing the ability to integrate a wide variety of network models, including those obtained from an overlay network. We present three models that demonstrate its usefulness, including "application-centric Internet modeling" that we specifically developed for Flexlab. Its key idea is to run the application within the emulation testbed and use its offered load to measure the overlay network. these measurements are used to shape the emulated network. Results indicate that for evaluation of applications running over Internet paths, Flexlab with this model can yield far more realistic results than either PlanetLab without resource reservations, or Emulab without topological information.

WiFi-based Long Distance (WiLD) networks with links as long as 50-100 km have the potential to provide connectivity at substantially lower costs than traditional approaches. However, real-world deployments of such networks yield very poor end-to-end performance. First, the current 802.11 MAC protocol has fundamental shortcomings when used over long distances. Second, WiLD networks can exhibit high and variable loss characteristics, thereby severely limiting end-to-end *** paper describes the design, implementation and evaluation of WiLDNet, a system that overcomes these two problems and provides enhanced end-to-end performance inWiLD networks. To address the protocol shortcomings, WiLDNet makes several essential changes to the 802.11 MAC protocol, but continues to exploit standard (low-cost) WiFi network cards. To better handle losses and improve link utilization, WiLDNet uses an adaptive loss-recovery mechanism using FEC and bulk acknowledgments. Based on a real-world deployment, WiLDNet provides a 2-5 fold improvement in TCP/UDP throughput (along with significantly reduced loss rates) in comparison to the best throughput achievable by conventional 802.11. WiLDNet can also be configured to adapt to a range of end-to-end performance requirements (bandwidth, delay, loss).

Advances in technology have made possible the implementation of feedback control systems over computer networks. In applications that allow the use of networked control systems one can also take advantage of increased flexibility, ease of installation and maintenance and perhaps a reduction in cost. Network delay or more importantly network unavailability are major disadvantages that need to be addressed. In this paper we make use of a split controller architecture and develop a methodology for controller design. Our formulation and solution method exploit robust control design tools. We apply the design process on a specific example and carry out simulations with hardware in the loop using MATLAB's rapid prototyping tools RTW/xPC Target. ©2005 IEEE.

Emerging Web services technologies provide an open infrastructure for automated business interaction, thereby creating new opportunities for business actors to collaborate within a networked constellation of enterprises via the Internet. the basis for a viable network of Web services (the supporting information system of such a networked constellation of enterprises) is a value model that shows sound value propositions to all actors involved. Requirements engineering techniques can be developed to support: (1) exploring alternative business models, and (2) evaluating alternatives on their economic viability, leading into the design and implementation of technical systems. In this paper, we present a business-oriented approach supporting Web services idea exploration (BASSIE), which exploits the synergy between the agent- and goal-oriented i* framework and the value-based e/sup 3/value framework. the approach iterates between exploration of structural alternatives and qualitative evaluation using i*, and quantitative modeling and evaluation of business value using e/sup 3/value. the approach is illustrated with a real life case study in digital music distribution.

this paper describes a printing system designed for an environment with several hundred printers, such that there is no single point of failure, and the print service continues to be available to new print jobs, even if any part of the print system fails. the paper also describes the following ideas implemented in this system: use of a single queue name (myprinter) for almost all print jobs from the client use of dynamically created print queues for each user (user-< username >), use of dynamically created print queues to manage low cost desktop printers, that are directly attached to a users display device (local-< xterm >), integration of the print service with the Zephyr notification system to send print progress messages, error messages, as well as route print jobs based on user location as reported by the notification mechanism. ability to route print jobs from legacy systems to all printers in the system, without having to define all the printers on the legacy system. (VM, VMS) the system was implemented using LPRng [1], taking advantage of its job routing, control file rewriting and dynamic printcap features.

the authors discuss a job scheduling system implemented on a network of 12 AT&T 3B2 microcomputers, running a transport distributed operating system, the Loadable Illinois networked Kernel (LINK). It is noted that the design overhead for a scheduling system built as part of an existing distributing computer system is very small compared to the design of the operating system itself. Moreover, an implementation allows one to answer many questions concerning load balancing problems that cannot be answered (or cannot be answered precisely) by queueing network models or simulation. the hardware and software environments are described together with the scheduler. Several experiments were performed to test the job scheduling system and it was found that substantial performance increases are possible compared to systems without a job scheduling system.
