Generating local addresses and communication sets is an important issue in distributed-memory implementations of data-parallel languages such as High Performance Fortran. We show that for an array A affinely aligned to a template that is distributed across p processors with a cyclic(κ) distribution, and a computation involving the regular section A(: h: s), the local memory access sequence for any processor is characterized by a finite state machine of at most κ;states. We present fast algorithms for computing the essential information about these state machines, and extend the framework to handle multidimensional arrays. We also show how to generate communication sets using the state machine approach. Performance results show that this solution requires very little runtime overhead and acceptable preprocessing time.

Several novel techniques for efficient implementation of concurrent object-oriented languages on general purpose, stock multicomputers are presented. these techniques have been developed in implementing our concurrent object-oriented language ABCL on a Fujitsu Laboratory's experimental multicomputer AP1000 consisting of 512 SPARC chips. the proposed intra-node scheduling mechanism reduces the cost of local message passing. the cost of intra-node asynchronous message passing is about 20 SPARC instructions in the best case, including locality checking, dynamic method lookup, and scheduling. the minimum latency of asynchronous internode message passing is about 9 μs, or about 120 instructions, employing the self-dispatching mechanism independently proposed by Eicken et al. A large scale benchmark which involves 9,000,000 message passings shows 440 times speedup on the 512 nodes system compared to the sequential version of the same algorithm. We rely on simple hardware support for message passing and use no specialized architectural supports for object-oriented computing. thus, we are able to enjoy the benefits of future progress in standard processor technology. Our result shows that concurrent object-oriented languages can be implemented efficiently on conventional multicomputers.

A vast body of theoretical research has focused either on overly simplistic models of parallel computation, notably the PRAM, or overly specific models that have few representatives in the real world. Both kinds of models encourage exploitation of formal loopholes, rather than rewarding development of techniques that yield performance across a range of current and future parallel machines. this paper offers a new parallel machine model, called LogP, that reflects the critical technology trends underlying parallel computers. It is intended to serve as a basis for developing fast, portable parallel algorithms and to offer guidelines to machine designers. Such a model must strike a balance between detail and simplicity in order to reveal important bottlenecks without making analysis of interesting problems intractable. the model is based on four parameters that specify abstractly the computing bandwidth, the communication bandwidth, the communication delay, and the efficiency of coupling communication and computation. Portable parallel algorithms typically adapt to the machine configuration, in terms of these parameters. the utility of the model is demonstrated through examples that are implemented on the CM-5.

In this paper we describe a new approach to implementing network protocols that enables them to have high performance and high flexibility, while retaining complete conformity to existing application programming interfaces. the key insight behind our work is that an application's interface to the network is distinct and separable from its interface to the operating system. We have separated these interfaces for two protocol implementations, TCP/IP and UDP/IP, running on the Mach 3.0 operating system and UNIX server. Specifically, library code in the application's address space implements the network protocols and transfers data to and from the network, while an operating system server manages the heavyweight abstractions that applications use when manipulating the network through operations other than send and receive. On DECstation 5000/200 systems connected by 10Mb/sec Ethernet, this approach to protocol decomposition achieves TCP/IP throughput of 1088 KB/second, which is comparable to that of a high-quality in-kernel TCP/IP implementation, and substantially better than a server-based one. Our approach achieves small-packet UDP/IP round trip latencies of 1.23 ms, again comparable to a kernel-based implementation and more than twice as fast as a server-based one. © 1993 acm.

the IPS-2 parallel program measurement tools provide performance data from application programs, the operating system, hardware, network, and other sources. Previous versions of IPS-2 allowed programmers to collect information about an application based only on what could be collected by software instrumentation inserted into the program (and system call libraries). We have developed an open interface, called the "external time histogram", providing a graceful way to include external data from many sources. the user can tell IPS-2 of new sources of performance data through an extensible metric description language. the data from these external sources is automatically collected when the application program is run. IPS-2 provides a library to simplify constructing the external data collectors. the new version of IPS-2 can measure sharedmemory and message-passing parallel programs running on a heterogeneous collection of machines. Data from C or Fortran programs, and data from simulations ean be processed by the same tool. As a result of including the new external performance data, IPS-2 now can report on a whole new set of performance problems. We describe the results of using IPS-2 on two real applications: A shared-memory database join utility, and a multi-processor interconnection network simulator. Even though these applications previously went through careful tuning, we were able to precisely identify performance problems and extract additional performance improvements of about 30%. © 1991 Association for Computing Machinery. Understanding synchronization is important for a parallel programming tool that uses dependence analysis as the basis for advising programmers on the correctness of parallel constructs. this paper discusses static analysis methods that can be applied to parallel programs with event variable synchronization. the objective is to be able to predict potential data races in a parallel program. the focus is on how dependences and synchronization statements inside loops can be used to analyze complete programs with parallel loop and parallel case style parallelism. © 1990 acm.

An algorithm for transforming sequential programs into equivalent parallel programs is presented. the method concentrates on finding loops whose separate iterations can be run in parallel without synchronization. Although a simple version of the method can be shown to be optimal, the problem of generating optimal code when loop interchange is employed is shown to be intractable. these methods are implemented in an experimental translation system developed at Rice University.

We consider a machine model in which load operations can be performed in parallel with arithmetic operations by two separate functional units. For this model, the evaluation of a set of expression trees is discussed. A dynamic programming algorithm to produce an approximate solution is described and analyzed. For binary trees its worse case cost is at most 9.1% worse than the optimal cost.

We describe a programming language called Symmetric Lisp that treats environments as first-class objects. Symmetric Lisp allows programmers to write expressions that evaluate to environments, and to create and denote variables and constants of type environment as well. One consequence is that the roles filled in other languages by a variety of limited, special purpose environment forms like records, structures, closures, modules, classes and abstract data types are filled instead by a single versatile and powerful structure. In addition to being its fundamental structuring tool, environments also serve as the basic functional object in the language. Because the elements of an environment are evaluated in parallel, Symmetric Lisp is a parallel programming language;because they may be assembled dyamically as well as statically, Symmetric Lisp accomodates an unusually flexible and simple (parallel) interpreter as well as other history-sensitive applications requiring dynamic environments.
