Current approaches to model checking distributed systems reduce the problem to that of model checking centralized systems: global states involving all nodes and communication links are systematically explored. the frequent changes in the network element of the global states lead however to a rapid state explosion and make it impossible to model check any non-trivial distributed system. We explore in this paper an alternative: a local approach where the network is ignored, a priori: only the local nodes' states are explored and in a separate manner. the set of valid system states is a subset of all combinations of the node local states and checking validity of such a combination is only performed a posteriori, in case of a possible bug. this approach drastically reduces the number of transitions executed by the model checker. It takes for example the classic global approach several minutes to explore the interleaving of messages in the celebrated Paxos distributed protocol even considering only three nodes and a single proposal. Our local approach explores the entire system state in a few seconds. Our local approach does clearly not eliminate the state exponential explosion problem. Yet, it postpones its manifestations till some deeper levels. this is already good enough for online testing tools that restart the model checker periodically from the current live state of a running system. We show for instance how this approach enables us to find two bugs in variants of Paxos.

We show how to build cheap and large CAMs, or CLAMs, using a combination of DRAM and flash memory. these are targeted at emerging data-intensive networked systems that require massive hash tables running into a hundred GB or more, with items being inserted, updated and looked up at a rapid rate. For such systems, using DRAM to maintain hash tables is quite expensive, while on-disk approaches are too slow. In contrast, CLAMs cost nearly the same as using existing on-disk approaches but offer orders of magnitude better performance. Our design leverages an efficient flash-oriented data-structure called BufferHash that significantly lowers the amortized cost of random hash insertions and updates on flash. BufferHash also supports flexible CLAM eviction policies. We prototype CLAMs using SSDs from two different vendors. We find that they can offer average insert and lookup latencies of 0.006ms and 0.06ms (for a 40% lookup success rate), respectively. We show that using our CLAM prototype significantly improves the speed and effectiveness of WAN optimizers.

Many Web services operate their own Web crawlers to discover data of interest, despite the fact that large-scale, timely crawling is complex, operationally intensive, and expensive. In this paper, we introduce the extensible crawler, a service that crawls the Web on behalf of its many client applications. Clients inject filters into the extensible crawler; the crawler evaluates all received filters against each Web page, notifying clients of matches. As a result, the act of crawling the Web is decoupled from determining whether a page is of interest, shielding client applications from the burden of crawling the Web *** paper describes the architecture, implementation, and evaluation of our prototype extensible crawler, and also relates early experience from several crawler applications we have built. We focus on the challenges and trade-offs in the system, such as the design of a filter language that is simultaneously expressive and efficient to execute, the use of filter indexing to cheaply match a page against millions of filters, and the use of document and filter partitioning to scale our prototype implementation to high document throughput and large numbers of filters. We argue that the low-latency, high selectivity, and scalable nature of our system makes it a promising platform for taking advantage of emerging real-time streams of data, such as Facebook or Twitter feeds.

Field-programmable gate arrays provide a very flexible implementation platform that supports the development of tamper-proof networked embedded systems. In order to achieve a secure mode of operation, many of these systems employ keyed-hash message authentication code, to provide security against intentional tampering. Since this algorithm is of high computational complexity, this paper utilizes various hardware-software co-design techniques for its implementation, and compares the results to standard software. the considered techniques vary in the degree of required design expertise and of how (software) functionalities are implemented in hardware logic.

the aim of this paper is giving a description of the CADDIE (Content Automated design and Developement Integrated Editor), a user friendly authoring tool for the automated production of sharable content objects, mainly oriented to networked learning and learning object design. It is a freely available Open Source application to assist teachers in the publishing of web content without the need to become proficient in HTML, XML markup or anyother language. Contents produced within the CADDIE environment can be exported in the form of self-contained web pages, LATEX files, standard document formats, or SCORM 2004 packages as well, usable on a LMS server or designed for a database SCO repository. this project has been developed by ELKM (E-Learning & Knowledge Management) laboratory and led by the University of Genoa. © 2008 by Knowledge systems Institute Graduate School. We present Quanto, a network-wide time and energy profiler for embedded network devices. By combining well-defined interfaces for hardware power states, fast high-resolution energy metering, and causal tracking of programmer-defined activities, Quanto can map how energy and time are spent on nodes and across a network. Implementing Quanto on the TinyOS operating system required modifying under 350 lines of code and adding 1275 new lines. We show that being able to take fine-grained energy consumption measurements as fast as reading a counter allows developers to precisely quantify the effects of low-level system implementation decisions, such as using DMA versus direct bus operations, or the effect of external interference on the power draw of a low duty-cycle radio. Finally, Quanto is lightweight enough that it has a minimal effect on system behavior: each sample takes 100 CPU cycles and 12 bytes of RAM.

networked systems are often evaluated on overlay testbeds such as PlanetLab and emulation testbeds such as Emulab. Emulation testbeds give users great control over the host and network environments and offer easy reproducibility, but only artificial network conditions. Overlay testbeds provide real network conditions, but are not repeatable environments and provide less control over the *** describe the motivation, design, and implementation of Flexlab, a new testbed with the strengths of both overlay and emulation testbeds. It enhances an emulation testbed by providing the ability to integrate a wide variety of network models, including those obtained from an overlay network. We present three models that demonstrate its usefulness, including "application-centric Internet modeling" that we specifically developed for Flexlab. Its key idea is to run the application within the emulation testbed and use its offered load to measure the overlay network. these measurements are used to shape the emulated network. Results indicate that for evaluation of applications running over Internet paths, Flexlab with this model can yield far more realistic results than either PlanetLab without resource reservations, or Emulab without topological information.

WiFi-based Long Distance (WiLD) networks with links as long as 50-100 km have the potential to provide connectivity at substantially lower costs than traditional approaches. However, real-world deployments of such networks yield very poor end-to-end performance. First, the current 802.11 MAC protocol has fundamental shortcomings when used over long distances. Second, WiLD networks can exhibit high and variable loss characteristics, thereby severely limiting end-to-end *** paper describes the design, implementation and evaluation of WiLDNet, a system that overcomes these two problems and provides enhanced end-to-end performance inWiLD networks. To address the protocol shortcomings, WiLDNet makes several essential changes to the 802.11 MAC protocol, but continues to exploit standard (low-cost) WiFi network cards. To better handle losses and improve link utilization, WiLDNet uses an adaptive loss-recovery mechanism using FEC and bulk acknowledgments. Based on a real-world deployment, WiLDNet provides a 2-5 fold improvement in TCP/UDP throughput (along with significantly reduced loss rates) in comparison to the best throughput achievable by conventional 802.11. WiLDNet can also be configured to adapt to a range of end-to-end performance requirements (bandwidth, delay, loss).

Web intelligence is a new rapidly evolving direction of research and development. the paper presents an approach to implementation of knowledge-based system combining the technologies of Web-services and intelligent agents. the approach takes an advantage of the idea of knowledge logistics that is based on synergistic integration of knowledge acquired from distributed sources in order to obtain new or complement insufficient knowledge. the paper gives an overview of a system based on the approach and illustrates its possible application to the logistics support in networked organizations via a case study of routing plans design as a part of logistics support task.

Modem programmable logic devices have capabilities that are well suited for them to assume a central role in the implementation of networked systems. We have devised a highly flexible soft platform architecture abstracted from such physical devices, which may be viewed as a particularly configurable, and programmable type of network processor. In this paper, we discuss multithreading in the context of this logic-centric soft platform, and describe the programmable mechanisms to support multithreading that we have implemented. through a design example, we evaluate these mechanisms, and report that the solution obtained had comparable performance to a custom solution written from scratch without the intermediate soft platform.
