Common spatial pattern (CSP) algorithm and principal component analysis (PCA) are two commonly used key techniques for EEG component selection and EEG feature extraction for EEG-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, boththe ordinary CSP and PCA algorithms face a loading problem, i.e., their weights in linear combinations are non-zero. this problem makes a BCI system easy to be over-fitted during training process, because not all of the information from EEG data are relevant to the given tasks. To deal withthe loading problem, this paper proposes a spare CSP algorithm and introduces a sparse PCA algorithm to BCIs. the performance of BCIs using the proposed sparse CSP and sparse PCA techniques is evaluated on a motor imagery classification task and a vigilance estimation task. Experimental results demonstrate that the BCI system with sparse PCA and sparse CSP techniques are superior to that using the ordinary PCA and CSP algorithms.

Common spatial pattern (CSP) is very successful in constructing spatial filters for detecting event-related synchronization and event-related desynchronization. In statistics, a CSP filter can optimally separate the motor-imagery-related components. However, for a single trail, the EEG features extracted after a CSP filter still include features not related to motor imagery. In this study, we introduce a linear dynamical system (LDS) approach to motor-imagery-based brain-computer interface (MI-BCI) to reduce the influence of these unrelated EEC features. this study is conducted on a BCI competition data set, which comprises EEG signals from several subjects performing various movements. Experimental results show that our proposed algorithm with LDS performs better than a traditional algorithm on average. the results reveal a promising direction in the application of LDS-based approach to MI-BCI.

We investigate two of the language classes intensively studied by the algorithmic learning theory community in the context of learning with correction queries. More precisely, we show that any pattern language can be inferred in polynomial time in length of the pattern by asking just a linear number of correction queries, and that k-reversible languages are efficiently learnable within this setting. Note that although the class of all patternlanguages is learnable with membership queries, this cannot be done in polynomial time. Moreover, the class of k-reversible languages is not learnable at all using membership queries only.

Textual patterns have been used effectively to extract information from large text collections. However they rely heavily on textual redundancy in the sense that facts have to be mentioned in a similar manner in order to be generalized to a textual pattern. Data sparseness thus becomes a problem when trying to extract information from hardly redundant sources like corporate intranets, encyclopedic works or scientific databases. We present results on applying a weakly supervised pattern induction algorithm to Wikipedia to extract instances of arbitrary relations. In particular, we apply different configurations of a basic algorithm for pattern induction on seven different datasets. We show that the lack of redundancy leads to the need of a large amount of training data but that integrating Web extraction into the process leads to a significant reduction of required training data while maintaining the accuracy of Wikipedia. In particular we show that, though the use of the Web can have similar effects as produced by increasing the number of seeds, it leads overall to better results. Our approach thus allows to combine advantages of two sources: the high reliability of a closed corpus and the high redundancy of the Web.
