the ATLAS experiment observes proton-proton collisions delivered by the LHC accelerator at CERN. the ATLAS Trigger and Data Acquisition (TDAQ) system selects interesting events on-line in a three-level trigger system in order to store them at a budgeted rate of several hundred Hz, for an average event size of ~1.5 MB. this paper focuses on the TDAQ data-logging system and in particular on the implementation and performance of a novel software design, reporting on the effort of exploiting the full power of multi-core hardware. In this respect, the main challenge presented by the data-logging workload is the conflict between the largely parallel nature of the event processing, including the recently introduced on-line event-compression, and the constraint of sequential file writing and checksum evaluation. this is further complicated by the necessity of operating in a fully data-driven mode, to cope with continuously evolving trigger and detector configurations. In this paper we will briefly discuss our development experience using recent concurrency-oriented libraries. We will then concentrate on the results of performance measurements performed on the current data-logging hardware. We will show that, even in the worst workload, the new parallel design is able to compete with the previous single-threaded one, while it is outperforming it in more favourable, realistic workloads. We will as well demonstrate the minimal overhead introduced by the above parallel techniques, considering the whole data-logging software performances with respect to the bare processing speed on the same hardware. Finally, we will discuss the effects of simultaneous multi-threading technologies, as found on recent CPUs. the data-logging operation in fact, mixing data processing and I/O, allows to efficiently exploit the features provided by these technologies.

Hydraulic systems are used in great numbers and serve a variety of purposes. Still, however, the operating efficiency of hydraulic systems is not as high as it could be. New ways of monitoring the product use provide opportunities to maintenance. through industrial product service systems the acquired product use information can be lead back into product development where it can be used to improve the development and quality of follower products. this paper presents a concept for leading feedback into product development and the state of implementation of a feedback assistant for decision support using statistical analysis methods and Bayesian Networks as a diagnosis and simulation method. the methods used have been validated on a centrifugal pump as an often used model hydraulic system.

the reviewing of operating experience at nuclear power plants (NPP) is not only critically important to safe and reliable operations, but also useful to guide the design of new plants which are similar to the current one under review How to identify and analyze the safety-related operating experience and then implement a more extensive review is a vital and challengeable issue. In this paper, a methodology of human factor engineering (HFE) operating experience review (OER) is proposed for NPP. the need for the application of HFE in the life cycle activities of NPP and other nuclear facilities has been demonstrated by plant operating histories and regulatory and industry reviews. As a very important element of HFE, the OER is performed from the beginning of the design process. the main purpose of performing an OER is to verify that the applicant has identified and analyzed HFE-related safety problems and issues in previous designs that are similar to the current one. In this way, negative features associated with predecessor designs may be avoided in the current NPP design while retaining positive features. the research of OER concentrates on the aspect of review criterion, scope and implementation procedure of the HFE-related operating experience. As the NRC requirement, the scope of operating experience can be divided into six types in accordance with sources of information. the implementation procedures of USA and China are introduced, respectively. the resolution of HFE OER issues involve function allocation, changes in automation, HSI equipment design, procedures, training, and so forth. the OER conclusions can contribute to other HFE activities and improve the safety, reliability and usability of the HSI design in NPP.

In presented paper new approach to Predator-prey algorithm was proposed. With the additional mechanism based on more complex biological behaviours like "adrenalin boost" and usage of Spiking Neural Network minimisation of implementation cost and maximisation of algorithm efficiencies was obtained. thanks to that algorithm can be easily implemented as on of abstract layers in complex standalone robotic systems. © 2011 Tech Univ of Lodz.

Individual product solutions require practicable concepts and IT support for fast product configuration and design. Knowledge of possible design options and basic conditions is of great significance in the conception of this type of support. the goal is an integrated conception and implementation of knowledge based IT applications for engineering design. Despite existing methodological support from software vendors, numerous questions still arise during requirements formulation, system evaluation, system integration into existing business IT environments, the creation of knowledge bases, the implementation of pilot process tasks, or definition of rollout and operation strategies. Illustrated by a case study, this paper presents the first results of a research project that deals with the systematic examination of the aforementioned issues with the aim to develop a framework for the holistic concept and the practical implementation of knowledge-based assistant systems. the main components of the presented approach are a practical method, an assistant for the acquisition and formalization of configuration and engineering knowledge as well as a system-neutral, federated knowledge base.

this paper explores the potential of VeFETs for mixed-signal circuits. A new physics-based compact DC model of the VeSFET operated in subthreshold region is presented and used to derive 1st-order sensitivities of the device threshold voltage to process variations. the VeSFET is compared to the MOSFET transistor, and its advantages and limitations are discussed. Using a Sea-of-Gates-like structure, layout strategies for area-efficient implementation of digital and analog functions are proposed. Finally, the implementation of a mixed-signal circuit (an OTA with chopper modulation) is presented to demonstrate the area-efficiency of circuit implemented with Sea-of-Gates VeSFETs. © 2011 Tech Univ of Lodz.

the development of a Computer Aided Inventing system, assisting product designers in the creative stage, is a lengthy process because of lack of any real systematization of design knowledge for software implementation. the existing development tools for knowledge-based systems offer limited support for intelligent design. A knowledge-based architecture for intelligent product implementation is described in this paper. It is aimed at facing those problems where radical implementation is needed. Intended solutions are not based on improvement of existing inventions, but are oriented towards a new technological jump. A modification of the function-behaviour-structure (FBS) ontology is proposed to analyze the product to be innovated. then an innovative behaviour oriented search aids the designer to systematically conceive a set of alternative behaviours, by means of a combination of three different creativity methods. the identified function - alternative behaviour couple is then automatically translated into targets for an automatic patent digging activity. Modified FBS ontology is also exploited to classify all the information collected at functional, behavioural and structural level, and a specific algorithm provides both patent search and classification in the form of a tree-like diagram. the software can be implemented as a support for building patent technological surveys, a personal knowledge database, technological transfer and forecasting.

In this paper we present discussion of our results of parallel programming techniques for image processing applications using graphics processor units (GPU's). We have considered and analyzed various GPU's taking their standing development into account and have implemented a number of most typical image processing tasks and algorithms. On this basis we have not only estimated the capacity growth of GPU's but also the corresponding growth of performance especially for the parallel image processing. © 2011 Tech Univ of Lodz.

Key challenges caused by implementation of diversity-oriented approach and FPGA technology are discussed in context of NPP I&C systems safety. National and international standards containing the requirements to diversity application in NPP I&C systems are analyzed. A few evolution stages of multi-version NPP I&C systems (Reactor Trip systems) are described taking into account different types of version redundancy (hardware, software, FPGA diversity). Main attention is attended to the methods of increasing tolerance of NPP I&C systems to physical and design faults using multi-version technologies. A life cycle model and multi-version technologies of FPGA-based I&C systems development are analyzed. implementation results of safety-critical NPP I&Cs developed by RPC "Radiy" using FPGA technology are described. the FPGA-based platform RADIY (TM) ensures scalability system functions, dependability and diversity. More than 20 different FPGA-based I&C systems were successfully developed, produced and implemented on the NPPs of Ukraine and Bulgaria during last five years.
